New York Jets RB Chris Johnson said Tuesday, July 1, that he's confident he'll be the team's lead back this year and won't be too involved in a timeshare with RBs Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell. "Once the season starts and once we're playing and I'm doing my thing, I'm pretty sure if I'm making plays they're going to want to keep handing the ball off to me," Johnson said. "If they want me to continue making plays, I'm pretty sure I can't do that if I'm on the sideline." Johnson said he's "pretty much cleared" by Dr. James Andrews after coming off offseason knee surgery, and he said he's close to 100 percent health.
After Johnson's disappointing 2013 season, it's hard to envision him ever returning to his glory days running the football. The Jets will surely look to keep him fresh, but there is room for improvement if he can prove he deserves lead-back touches; the Jets said they'll go with a hot hand if one stands out. For now, consider Johnson a risky RB3 with upside for a bit more.
