New England Patriots WRs Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson continued to gain chemistry with QB Tom Brady in the team's preseason loss Thursday, Aug. 22. Thompkins had eight catches for 116 yards and consistently beat the Detroit Lions' cornerbacks. Thompkins stepped up with WR Danny Amendola (undisclosed) not playing. Thompkins ran clean and precise routes and showed reliable hands. He could still use some work on his run blocking, but Thompkins looks to be the No. 2 receiver behind Amendola. Dobson has had an underwhelming preseason, but he had his best game Thursday, catching four passes for 50 yards. He's having trouble with coverage at the line of scrimmage and has struggled to create separation in space. However, he's running crisp routes, but has had issues with using his strength against cornerbacks. Dobson's chemistry with Brady continues to grow, though.
Thompkins has passed Dobson on the depth chart with a better preseason to this point and should be the one you target with a late sleeper pick to round out your wide receiver core. We've seen it countless times before: Brady's expertise making a young, inexperienced wideout shine.
