Jets | QB competition too close to call

The quarterback competition between New York Jets QBs Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith is too close to call, and it's unknown when the team will make a decision on a starter. Smith will start the preseason game against the New York Giants Saturday, Aug. 24, and he'll play into the third quarter with Sanchez replacing him after. The coaching staff won't commit to naming a starter before the final preseason game. "We could (wait until after) because, like we've said the whole time, we're not putting a timetable on this," Ryan said. "When we're ready to make that decision and we feel great about it as an organization, we'll make that decision." Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg is comfortable with Sanchez as the starter but wants to see what Smith can do. "Mark has had a terrific camp," Mornhinweg said. "He's had a bunch of ups, and he's had some dips. Geno has had an outstanding camp for a rookie. He's had just a little bit more than a couple of plays in the preseason, so we'll see what happens."
Don't hold your breath here. The longer the team waits to make an announcement, the greater chance Smith has of winning the job. Smith will be rough around the edges if he starts in Week 1, but he clearly has more upside than Sanchez. Neither are worth drafting in standard leagues.
