Chargers | Ryan Mathews feels he can be elite

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews heads into his fourth season, and he understands he has been an "average back" in his first three years. However, he dropped about 10 pounds from his weight last season, and enters training camp at 220 pounds. He is healthy and has big expectations for himself. "I think I can be a top-five back," Mathews said, "and be up with the best of them. I just have to be consistent. That's the main thing, to be consistent with my play."
Be consistent, and stay healthy. The latter has been the biggest issue for Mathews since he came out of Fresno State. We saw this whole movie last season, as he entered the year with big expectations only to suffer a collarbone injury. It isn't necessarily his fault, as much as perhaps some bad luck. However, fantasy owners should be very cautious not to buy into the hype, and have plenty of alternates at the ready just in case.
