Stewart-Haas Racing | Tony Stewart has second surgery
Thu, 08 Aug 2013 17:03:42 -0700

Stewart-Haas Racing driver Tony Stewart (leg) had successful surgery to place a rod in his broken right leg Thursday, Aug. 8. He is out indefinitely. Driver Max Papis has been named as the replacement in Stewart's No. 14 car for the Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen Sunday, Aug. 11. The team hasn't announced a replacement for any of the following weeks. Stewart had a surgery Monday, Aug. 5, after his crash to stabilize and clean his Grade 2 injury. He'll remain in the hospital, and there isn't a date for him to be released. Stewart will miss multiple races. Dr. Walt Beaver said usually a broken tibia and fibula requires four to eight weeks of recovery. Blood thinners are likely to be prescribed for Stewart since drivers sit for long periods of time, but he's unlikely to be cleared while on blood thinners because it poses the risk of bleeding to death if he's involved in a serious crash.
