Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com, reports former NFL LB LaVar Arrington said he believes Bills defensive coordinator George Edwards has the ability to teach DE Aaron Maybin to become a successful outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive alignment. "I just think that the way that George Edwards can coach and identify players' strengths and weaknesses that he'll have enough time to work with Aaron. Hopefully Aaron will be able to pick it up and know what it is that George is putting on his plate and help him transition to being a 'tweener' in terms of being a defensive end and an outside linebacker. Aaron needs to know how to be versatile either way. I think George will be able to show him and teach him and put him in a position where he can be successful," Arrington said.

"When I was playing under him I made the All-SEC freshman team so I can't do anything but buy into what he'll be selling because I've seen it work before. I definitely think everyone is going to be satisfied with him. It's going to be a hard-nosed approach I can guarantee you that," Stroud said.

"Defensively, we will start from a 3-4 alignment," said Edwards. "But we will do what we feel is best for our players. We are not going to give anything away about exactly what we will do, but personnel will dictate what you can and what you can't do. As far as the initial alignment, the 3-4 is what we will start off with and we will adjust from there."

Chan Gailey, who was named the Bills head coach, was on top of the viable candidates list. Among the other names on the viable candidates list were Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, Arizona Cardinals assistant head coach Russ Grimm, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera. Former NFL head coaches Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden as well as Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh were on the list of reach candidates.

"I don't like the idea of handicapping a coach by saying he's got to keep this guy or you've got this player we've already signed and you have to keep him whether he fits or not. As a general manager I'm not going to go out and coach. My job is to be able to recognize talent and get them in here and put them in the right place," Nix said. Nix will have final say on the 53-man roster, but Gailey will have input in the decisions.

"Why he had not called a coach with a Super Bowl ring, 10 wins a year for nine years, having orchestrated the highest-scoring offense and defense in the history of the league, is a question worth asking. But I never spoke with [Bills general manager Buddy Nix]," Billick said.
