Retired TE Tony Gonzalez said it would be tempting to return later in the season if a Super Bowl contender came calling for his services. "But I'd be a mercenary to come in and get a Super Bowl ring, play with a team for, what, six, seven weeks," Gonzalez said. "And even if I got the ring, it wouldn't be the same as going through the fight with the team from the beginning to the end. I don't think that will happen. In recent years, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has expressed the desire to improve the quality of preseason games, possibly by eliminating two contests. Some team owners have suggested the removal of two games in favor of adding a pair of postseason games. However, the NFL front office is backing away from the removal of preseason games, because the interest in reduction of games has waned among team owners.New York Giants owner John Mara said he feels four games are necessarily to prepare Giants players. The removal of preseason games and addition of playoff matchups are not necessarily linked, according to Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy. Murphy added that he believes expanded playoffs will go into effect in 2015.
