NFL | Jaylon Smith receives high praise

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 09:28:27 -0800

Ohio State LB Jaylon Smith (knee) has been compared to former San Francisco 49ers LB Patrick Willis. "Jaylon Smith is an all-time athlete, a guy you absolutely love. He's a thumper in the middle, he can run from sideline to sideline. He's very violent in his play, a guy that I believe is a three-down linebacker, very versatile," NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks said. Smith tore knee ligaments in his final college game and will likely be limited to medical exams and personal interviews during the Scouting Combine.

NFL | Derrick Henry compared to former bust

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 18:49:57 -0800

Alabama RB Derrick Henry was compared to retired RB Curtis Enis by former NFL personnel man Bryan Broaddus, who said Henry's game tape shows a big back that can't create his own running lanes.

Fantasy Tip: Enis was a big, bruising back coming out of college, but he played just four years. Henry's value as a rookie will likely depend on what team drafts him, but he could be a flex play as a rookie in the right situation.

NFL | Carson Wentz the next Cam Newton?

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 14:22:56 -0800

North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz has emerged as an elite quarterback prospect for the 2016 NFL Draft, and he could be used in the NFL similarly to how the Carolina Panthers use QB Cam Newton.

"Designed quarterback runs, powers, draw plays, some of the zone-read things, that lead me to believe a creative offensive coordinator could implement some of those things for him to take advantage of his unique athleticism for a guy his size," NFL media analyst Bucky Brooks said.

Fantasy Tip: Wentz's pure athleticism behind center is one of the reasons he's flying up mock draft boards this spring. He could be taken as high as No. 2 overall by the Cleveland Browns and immediately start in his rookie season. Because of his ability to gain yards with his legs, Wentz could be a surprise fantasy QB2 immediately.

NFL | Trevone Boykin invited to combine

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 22:31:51 -0800

Texas Christian QB Trevone Boykin has received an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine and he will be working out with the quarterbacks. According to sources, Boykin has also been doing receiver work during his combine preparation, but there are no current plans for him to run routes or catch passes at the combine or his pro day at TCU.

Fantasy Tip: Boykin was a good college quarterback, but if he is to make a splash on Sundays it will likely be as a receiver or wildcat kind of a player.

NFL | Myles Jack likely to go early

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 22:29:35 -0800

UCLA LB Myles Jack is expected to be taken early in the first round of the NFL Draft. He is labeled as a rare athlete with good athleticism, intensity and versatility with the ability to play all three downs.

Fantasy Tip: Jack was a standout linebacker at UCLA, and he also subbed as running back in past seasons when injuries occurred. He will likely be a favorite of fantasy owners in leagues which use individual defensive players (IDPs) sooner rather than later.

NFL | Braxton Miller receiving help

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 15:05:54 -0800

Ohio State WR Braxton Miller indicated Tuesday, Feb. 9, that Hall of Fame WR Cris Carter is helping Miller prepare for the NFL Scouting Combine.

Fantasy Tip: Miller already impressed at the Senior Bowl. Any outside help, especially from former wide receivers like Carter, will only benefit Miller before the combine. Miller isn't expected to make a huge impact right away, but he could provide some good fantasy value as he becomes more polished.

NFL | League restricting prospects with convictions

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 07:24:58 -0800

The NFL sent out a memo in late January that prospects invited to "any league-related event" would be barred if a background check turns up a felony or misdemeanor conviction for domestic violence, sexual assault or weapons offenses. Players that refuse to submit to a background check will also be uninvited. This includes the NFL Scouting Combine and the NFL Draft. "It is important for us to remain strongly committed to league values as we demonstrate to our fans, future players, coaches, general managers, and others who support our game that character matters," NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent wrote in the memo.

NFL | Paxton Lynch will throw at combine

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 16:48:04 -0800

Memphis QB Paxton Lynch said Friday, Feb. 5, that he will take part in the passing drills at the NFL Scouting Combine. Lynch is among the top quarterback prospects available in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Fantasy Tip: Lynch has incredible size and athletic ability, and he could very well be a first-round pick that is tasked with starting immediately, depending on where he lands. Expect a period of adjustment in the NFL, though, as he transitions to a pro-style offense.

NFL | Carson Wentz a risky prospect?

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 13:06:44 -0800

North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz impressed many at Senior Bowl practices last week, but some NFL personnel executives are hesitant to label him a top quarterback prospect entering the 2016 NFL Draft. "One said 'Boy, that North Dakota State kid is way overrated.' And the other one texted me and said 'After watching him for a full week, there is no way I would draft Carson Wentz in the first round,'" NFL media analyst Lance Zierlein said on.

Fantasy Tip: Wentz could wind up going as high as No. 2 overall to the Cleveland Browns, who are looking for a franchise quarterback under new head coach Hue Jackson. Wentz has the tools to be a successful NFL quarterback, and if he's starting right away he'll surely experience growing pains. But he could be a decent backup in the right matchups.
