MLB commissioner Bud Selig said the league wasn't aware of any exemption that New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez had to use a testosterone-boosting substance in 2007. "We did not know about it at the time," Selig said. "These independent people made a judgment. History proved them I guess it turned out to be somewhat wrong, but they were outstanding doctors."

Pete Rose could play a role in next year's All-Star game in Cincinnati despite his lifetime ban from baseball, according to MLB commissioner Bud Selig. Rose currently isn't allowed in any areas of major league ballparks not open to fans, but he has been permitted to be on the field several times for ceremonies. The Cincinnati Reds will be hosting the 2015 All-Star game July 14.

MLB | Billy Bean named inclusion consultant

Ex-minor leaguer Billy Bean will serve as a consultant in guiding MLB toward greater inclusion and equality, commissioner Bud Selig announced Tuesday, July 15. Bean came out as gay after his playing career and will provide guidance and training related to efforts designed to support the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community throughout baseball. He'll work with players and front office personnel through the major and minor leagues.

MLB | Want to reduce smokeless tobacco use

MLB commissioner Bud Selig and Players Association executive director Tony Clark want to work together to reduce and ultimately eliminate the use of smokeless tobacco in the game. Smokeless tobacco is banned in the minor leagues, but MLB's new rules enacted in 2001 just prohibit teams from providing tobacco and players carrying tobacco cans in their uniforms or doing on-camera interviews while chewing tobacco.
