Cuban free-agent OF Alexei Bell will hold a workout for interested teams in Mexico on Feb. 15.
Fantasy Tip: Bell is a 32-year-old right-handed hitter who batted .317 with two home runs, 23 RBIs and 11 steals in 59 games last season in the Can-Am League. He was a lifetime .319 hitter in Cuba, with nearly as many walks (431) as strikeouts (439) in 3,441 plate appearances. Bell is said to have a strong arm and above-average speed, although one scout believes he is not the same player that led Cuba to a silver medal in the 2008 Olympics. He should go undrafted but could be worth monitoring in single-universe and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues.

Cuban free-agent OF Yordanis Linares will hold a workout for interested teams in Mexico on Feb. 16.
Fantasy Tip: Linares is a 26-year-old left-handed hitter who batted .311 with 15 home runs, 99 RBIs and 26 steals in 665 at-bats over three seasons in Cuba. He should be monitored in single-universe and deep mixed leagues once he signs with a club.

Free-agent RP Joe Nathan (Tigers) is "definitely planning on playing this season," according to agent Dave Pepe, who added that his workouts are going well.
Fantasy Tip: The 41-year-old right-hander missed the entire 2015 season recovering from Tommy John surgery and has received interest from 10 teams. He should be viewed as a desperation flier in all fantasy formats at this point and is unlikely to resume pitching before May.

Nine MLB teams are heavily involved in the bidding for 16-year-old Cuban OF Lazaro Armenteros, according to a source. It is not yet known if he will agree to a deal when he becomes eligible to sign a contract Wednesday, Feb. 10, or if he will wait until the next international signing period begins July 2.
Fantasy Tip: Armenteros is unlikely to reach the majors in the next year or two but owners in long-term dynasty leagues should keep tabs on his progress as he advances through the minors.

Free-agent SP Mark Buehrle (Blue Jays) isn't planning to sign this offseason but isn't officially retiring. Buehrle will leave the door open if he considers a comeback down the road.
Fantasy Tip: Buehrle has had a fine career and has been one of the most underappreciated fantasy assets for starting pitchers. He wouldn't command much attention, though, if he decided to take one more run at it.

One National League scout suggested that it'd be a good move for free-agent SS Ian Desmond (Nationals) to make the move to third base. "I think he would be excellent there," said the scout. "He's a shortstop who probably doesn't have the great range, but he'd be very good at third. He's a great kid in the clubhouse who works hard. At some point, there has got to be a team, maybe one who has a pick at the end of the first round, who'd give that up for a guy like this."
Fantasy Tip: Desmond remains on the open market, so his fantasy value will depend on where he lands. A disappointing .233 average in 2015 has many down on him, but the free swinger remains a 20-homer candidate, and he can also run a bit. There is buying potential in the middle rounds.

Free-agent P Craig Breslow (Red Sox) is drawing interest from multiple teams as both a starter and a reliever.
Fantasy Tip: Breslow went 0-4 with a 4.15 ERA in 45 appearances for the Red Sox last season, with two spot starts. Even if he lands with a club that will give him an opportunity to start on a regular basis, he is nothing more than a late-round flier in single-universe fantasy leagues.

Free-agent 2B Howie Kendrick (Dodgers) has hit between .285 and .297 in each of the last five seasons, but he'll be 32 this season and played in only 122 games in 2013 and 117 contests last year. His percentage of extra-base hits has been 6.7% the last two seasons, which are the lowest figures of his career. Kendrick also doesn't walk that often, and his walk rate declined rapidly in the second half of 2015, when he had only three walks in 136 plate appearances.
Fantasy Tip: As Schoenfield notes, Kendrick's only real asset to his fantasy owners is his excellent contact rate, which allows him to have high batting averages. Aside from that he wont' give you much, which makes him mainly a deep mixed middle infielder.

Fantasy Tip: The soon-to-be 30-year-old Fowler is a reliable source of runs scored and stolen bases and experienced the best season of his career in 2015. He batted .250 with 17 home runs, 46 RBIs and 20 steals, along with 102 runs scored, while serving as the Cubs' leadoff hitter last year. Fowler should be taken in the middle rounds of drafts for single-universe leagues and cavernous mixed leagues.

Free-agent SP Mat Latos (Dodgers) may be having trouble signing with a club because of attitude issues, sources speculate.
Fantasy Tip: The fact he went from the Cincinnati Reds to the Miami Marlins and eventually the Los Angeles Dodgers in one season is certainly a question mark. As to how it effects your drafting of Latos, he should be considered for later rounds only. There are better pitchers in front of him.
Fri, 22 Jan 2016 11:01:46 -0800
Fantasy Tip: None of the three spots are great for his declining stuff. He'll be an SP3 or SP4 option, but his ratios may continue to suffer.
Thu, 21 Jan 2016 13:09:11 -0800
Free-agent OF Austin Jackson (Cubs) received interest from the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Texas Rangers, and the Chicago Cubs could look to re-sign Jackson for the right price.
Fantasy Tip: Jackson is beginning to flame out with a .261/.310/.364 slash line over the past two seasons and underwhelming counting stats. Full-time at-bats would help his cause in cavernous mixed and only leagues, but at this point, he is likely best left to the waiver wire in the majority of leagues. There is bounce-back potential in the right setting, though.

Free-agent RP Joe Nathan (Tigers) is receiving interest from 10 teams, but he is not close to making a decision on who to sign with, according to sources.
Fantasy Tip: Nathan is currently recovering from his second Tommy John surgery, and at 41, there is no telling what is left in the tank for the veteran. If the cookie crumbles in his favor, there could be save opportunities in his future, but at this point, he is nothing more than a desperation flier in the endgame of drafts. Stay tuned for updates.
Sun, 17 Jan 2016 15:46:19 -0800
Free-agent OF Yoenis Cespedes (Mets) may be close to signing with a new team, according to sources.
Fantasy Tip: Cespedes has interest from the New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Houston Astros. Stay tuned, as a deal could be announced at any time. He is a strong pickup and will be drafted in the upper rounds of mixed leagues.

Free-agent SP Cliff Lee (Phillies) still wants to play in 2016 and wants to sign with a strong contender, but not many know about his progress from elbow surgery.
Fantasy Tip: Lee is a risk and should be avoided in all but very deep fantasy leagues, where a pitcher like this can be stashed away without much in the way of penalty to your team.
