MLB | Jonny Gomes has no plans to retire

Wed, 25 May 2016 19:55:11 -0700

Free-agent OF Jonny Gomes (Japanese League) said he is not retiring. The 35-year-old veteran, who played in the majors from 2003 to 2015, was playing with the Rakuten Golden Eagles of the Japanese League until two weeks ago, when he voluntarily parted ways with the club. Gomes hit just .169 in 75 plate appearances with Rakuten this year.

Fantasy Tip: If Gomes latches on with an MLB team, it would almost certainly be in a reserve role, which would limit his fantasy value to deep single-universe seasonal leagues.

MLB | Suspensions coming for Odor, Bautista

Mon, 16 May 2016 16:31:03 -0700

Texas Rangers 2B Rougned Odor and Toronto Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista are expected to have their suspensions announced by Major League Baseball Tuesday, May 17, according to Joe Torre. Odor and Bautista were involved in a fight during the game Sunday, May 15.

Fantasy Tip: It's unknown how long both players will be banned, but it's likely to be something around a handful of games. Both players can appeal any punishment and would continue to be eligible to play while the league reviews the incident. Stay tuned for more information on how long Joey Bats and Odor will be out and act accordingly in leagues where you own them.

MLB | Tim Lincecum has three teams in on him

Thu, 12 May 2016 09:52:56 -0700

Free-agent SP Tim Lincecum (Giants) has the most interest from the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Chicago White Sox. The San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners aren't interested. Lincecum isn't close to a decision.

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum's stuff plays better in the National League, but the Giants have been interested in him as a reliever. He could be worth a flyer depending on the park and league he lands in.

MLB | Cubs-Padres game in jeopardy

Mon, 09 May 2016 09:17:11 -0700

The game between the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres scheduled for Monday, May 9, is expected to have a lengthy delay or postponement due to rain that will be entering the Chicago area by late afternoon. The best-case scenario is that the game starts on time and rain throughout the middle to late innings is light enough to play through. Cubs SP Jon Lester is set to face off against Padres SP Cesar Vargas.

Fantasy Tip: While you probably don't want to bench any Cubs for this game in traditional formats, tread carefully in this one and be prepared to make lineup adjustments if necessary. Avoiding this game entirely in daily setups would be wise.

MLB | Four teams eyeing Tim Lincecum

Sun, 08 May 2016 20:48:47 -0700

Free-agent SP Tim Lincecum (Giants) is drawing serious interest from the San Francisco Giants, Chicago White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Fantasy Tip: If Lincecum lands a spot in a starting rotation, he would at least be worth a flier in single-league formats.

MLB | Tim Lincecum shines in showcase

Fri, 06 May 2016 16:57:22 -0700

Free-agent SP Tim Lincecum (Giants) looked good during a 41-pitch showcase for scouts from almost every major league team Friday, May 6. He threw a mix of pitches and was consistently hitting 88 to 91 mph with his fastball. Lincecum hasn't pitched since June 27 of last season with the San Francisco Giants. He's hoping to catch on with a team soon, preferably as a starter.

Fantasy Tip: Several teams have rotation issues and could probably use Lincecum, most notably the Angels. However, it remains to be seen how effective he can be in the big leagues after declining the past few seasons due to injuries. Keep him in your radar in deep mixed and NL-only leagues if he latches on with a team and is given a rotation spot.

MLB | Pirates-Marlins may cancel Puerto Rico trip

Tue, 03 May 2016 11:54:02 -0700

Due to fears of the Zika virus in Puerto Rico, Major League Baseball is on the verge of canceling a trip to the country for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins scheduled for May 30-31 in San Juan, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation. Players and coaches from both teams have raised concerns about traveling to the country.

Fantasy Tip: This is unlikely to have a huge fantasy impact on the players either way, but if the Pirates and Marlins stay in the U.S., you won't have to worry about any negative implications for any players from those teams. Stay tuned on the final decision, but it looks like this trip won't happen.

MLB | Tim Lincecum eyes starting

Tue, 03 May 2016 08:23:19 -0700

Free-agent SP Tim Lincecum (Giants), who will throw in a showcase Friday, May 6, still wants to be a starter. The San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Washington Nationals, Baltimore Orioles and Miami Marlins are expected to be among the many teams attending the showcase. The Giants are interested in him as a reliever.

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum could be worth stashing in NL-only leagues. He has still shown the ability to strike hitters out, but his command has been an issue for years. He's a watch list player in mixed leagues.

MLB | Tim Lincecum to throw Friday

Mon, 02 May 2016 09:34:02 -0700

Free-agent SP Tim Lincecum (hip) will put on a showcase for interested teams Friday, May 6. Dozens of scouts are expected to be in attendance, including the San Francisco Giants. The San Diego Padres and Baltimore Orioles are also expected to watch. Lincecum had surgery on his last September and didn't pitch after June 27 in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum is a former shell of his Cy Young self after injuries have derailed his career. His velocity was noticeably down last year before his injury, and he relies more on control and deception now. There's no guarantee that he'll even sign with a team or be effective, so stay tuned. If he signs with a club and earns a roster spot, it could only be as a reliever, which would leave him little fantasy value.

MLB | Alex Rios received multiple offers

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 17:39:07 -0700

Free-agent OF Alex Rios (Royals) received offers from several MLB teams during the offseason but declined them in the hopes of landing with a club that would give him a significant role.

Fantasy Tip: The 35-year-old Rios hit .255 with four home runs and 32 RBI in 385 at-bats for Kansas City in 2015 and could retire if no team comes forward with a suitable offer. If he does wind up signing somewhere, he should be viewed as an option exclusively for single-universe fantasy leagues.

MLB | Pirates-Rockies postponed

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 10:42:18 -0700

The game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Colorado Rockies scheduled for Thursday, April 28, was postponed due to inclement weather. No makeup date was announced. Pirates SP Juan Nicasio was scheduled to face Rockies SP Tyler Chatwood.

Fantasy Tip: On a day with few games, the players to choose from just got smaller. Make sure to avoid any of the players from this game in daily fantasy, and it makes spending up for high-priced players like Jake Arrieta more palatable.

MLB | Tim Lincecum showcase coming soon

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 10:27:51 -0700

Free-agent SP Tim Lincecum (Giants) was spotted throwing at the San Francisco Giants' Arizona complex, and he's expected to have a showcase for teams soon.

Fantasy Tip: What does Lincecum have left in the tank? It's hard to say, but the Freak's skills and velocity have tumbled the last several years mainly due to various injuries. He could become a spot starter in the deepest of leagues if he lands in the right situation and stays healthy. Stay tuned.

MLB | Kyle Lohse looking for the right team

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 14:51:14 -0700

Free-agent SP Kyle Lohse (Brewers) is looking for the "right fit" before signing a contract. He has received interest from the Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles and Cincinnati Reds, and the Orioles have offered Lohse a contract.

Fantasy Tip: Lohse has a 5.8 K/9 mark during his 15-year career, and his ERA ballooned to 5.85 last season. There is extremely limited fantasy upside here, especially if Loshe signs in the American League. He is an innings eater who likely won't help in any particular category, and those are the worst pitchers to own in fantasy.
