Free-agent QB Brett Favre (Vikings) said he is enjoying retirement and has no plans of returning to the NFL. Favre also denied there have been any talks with teams about ending retirement. "I haven't contacted nor have been contacted by any teams and all reports are inaccurate," Favre said.

Former Kansas City Chiefs LB Mike Vrabel said Tuesday, July 12, that his decision to retire and join the Ohio State coaching staff as linebackers coach wasn't due to the lockout. "I thought in January when we lost to the (Baltimore Ravens) that I had played my last down in the NFL," Vrabel said. "Whether the league resumed in March, I don't know if I would have felt any better or any worse, but I'm comfortable with this decision."

Retrired QB Brett Favre's mother and brother said that Favre will remain retired. "I would say there's less than a 1 percent chance," Scott Favre, Favre's brother, said. "He is retired." Bonita Favre, Brett's mother, added, "I would hope he would not do it. He is crazy if he does."

The Detroit News reports former NFL head coach Bobby Ross said he retired in 2000 because of health reasons. Ross had blood clots in both of his legs and had to be hospitalized for five days. "I had to retire. I panicked, I got scared. I was wrong. My father was a double amputee. I just got scared," Ross said.

Ethan J. Skolnick, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, reports retired QB Jay Fiedler (shoulder) said the reason he retired was because of his injured shoulder. Fiedler had a bad shoulder that required two surgeries from the initial injury he sustained in 2005. Fiedler said he tried rehabbing but he could only get his shoulder back to 80 percent, nothing beyond that.

Carson said, "If we made the league what it is, you have to do a better job of taking care of your own." The league and its union recently reached an agreement to improve pensions and benefits by $120 million a year.

Luke Sacks, of NFLPlayers.com, reports that former NFL LB Andre Collins was recently named Director of Retired Players with the NFL Players Associaton (NFLPA). Collins, who played for the Redskins, Bengals, Bears and Lions from 1990 to 1999, replaces the retired Frank Woschitz, who fulfilled this capacity for more than 25 years. In his new position, Collins will be working on ways to make the transition out of football easier for retirees, increasing membership, and improving morale and building camaraderie between players and local chapters across the country.

Former Detroit Lions RB Barry Sanders says he retired prematurely from the NFL because of the team's perceived lack of commitment to building a winning team. According to the Associated Press, Sanders has written a new book, "Barry Sanders: Now You See Him … His Story in His Own Words," in which he says a "communications gap" opened between him and the Lions' front office as the team unloaded quality players. Sanders retired following the 1998 season at the age of 31, and is currently the NFL's third all-time leading rusher.
