Blue Jays | J.A. Happ financial details

Sat, 28 Nov 2015 11:37:24 -0800

Updating a previous report, Toronto Blue Jays SP J.A. Happ's three-year, $36 million deal will pay him $10 million during the 2016 season and $13 million during both the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Fantasy Tip: Happ was an attractive free-agent pitching option for Toronto because no qualifying offer was extended to him by the Pirates, meaning that the Jays didn't have to part with any draft picks in order to sign him. After a slow beginning to the 2015 season in Seattle, Happ went 7-2 with a 1.85 ERA in 11 starts for Pittsburgh. However, he might have difficulty duplicating that success in the hitter-friendly AL East during the 2016 season, so fantasy owners should avoid drafting him too early.

Blue Jays | TOR signs J.A. Happ

Fri, 27 Nov 2015 17:19:22 -0800

The Toronto Blue Jays have signed free-agent SP J.A. Happ (Pirates) to a three-year deal worth $36 million.

Fantasy Tip: Happ went 11-8 with a 3.61 ERA in 32 regular-season games (31 starts) for Seattle and Pittsburgh in 2015 and was particularly impressive for the Pirates down the stretch, going 7-2 with a 1.85 ERA and 69 strikeouts over 63 1/3 innings. Happ should be viewed as an option for the back end of the rotation in AL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues.

Blue Jays | Edwin Encarnacion resumes working out

Thu, 26 Nov 2015 17:42:59 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays 1B/DH Edwin Encarnacion (hernia) has resumed working out following sports hernia surgery last month. He tweeted a short video of himself jogging in his native Dominican Republic Thursday, Nov. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Encarnacion, who will turn 33 in January, is expected to be completely healthy by the time spring training camp opens in late February. He hit .277 with 39 home runs and 111 RBIs in 146 regular-season games in 2015 and is still projected to be taken in the early rounds of fantasy baseball drafts despite the injury concerns.

Blue Jays | Toronto lands Jesse Chavez

Fri, 20 Nov 2015 16:07:10 -0800

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired SP Jesse Chavez from the Oakland Athletics Friday, Nov. 20, in exchange for SP Liam Hendriks, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Chavez had an up-and-down season before being shelved with a rib injury in September. He went 7-15 with a 4.18 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 26 starts for the A's. He could be used as a swing man for the Blue Jays, and this trade hurts his fantasy value moving to one of the more hitter-friendly environments. He's a late-round flier in AL-only leagues if he wins a rotation spot.

Blue Jays | Josh Donaldson wins AL MVP Award

Thu, 19 Nov 2015 15:51:11 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson won the American League Most Valuable Player Award Thursday, Nov. 19.

Fantasy Tip: Donaldson lead the AL in runs (122), RBI (123) and total bases (352), and he also hit 41 home runs and posted a .297/.371/.568 slash line. He is a lock for the top-end of the first round of drafts next spring and stands to have another huge season in 2016, especially with his hitter-friendly home venue.

Blue Jays | Devon Travis undergoes surgery

Wed, 18 Nov 2015 13:02:52 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays 2B Devon Travis (shoulder) underwent shoulder surgery Wednesday, Nov. 18, and he will require four to five months to recover.

Fantasy Tip: The recovery timeline puts Travis on track to be ready for the beginning of the 2016 season. While he was excellent when healthy in 2015 with 38 runs, eight home runs, 35 RBI and a .304/.361/.498 slash line through 62 games, it could be tough to trust him as anything more than a late-round pick in drafts this spring. Still, there is a lot to like about being attached to the potent Toronto lineup. Check back for updates on Travis' recovery over the winter.

Blue Jays | Marco Estrada inks two-year deal with Jays

Fri, 13 Nov 2015 14:00:27 -0800

Blue Jays SP Marco Estrada re-signed a two-year, $26 million contract with Toronto Friday, Nov. 13.

Fantasy Tip: It was a storybook season for Estrada, as he became a key cog in the rotation and helped the Blue Jays to a playoff berth. His 13 wins, 3.13 ERA and 1.04 WHIP are quality numbers, but don't overlook his 4.40 FIP and lackluster 6.5 K/9. Estrada needs high-end ratios to account for his low-strikeout total, and there is potential for regression. Beware not to reach for him in drafts next spring based on a career-best showing in 2015.

Blue Jays | TOR talking to Marco Estrada

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 18:33:18 -0800

The Toronto Blue Jays are talking to SP Marco Estrada about a multi-year contract, according to multiple major league sources. The team had previously offered him a one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer.

Fantasy Tip: If Estrada doesn't agree to the multi-year contract offer or qualifying offer by Friday, Nov. 13, he will become a free agent who is eligible to sign with any club. The Jays would then receive a compensatory draft pick in 2016 if he chooses to sign elsewhere. The 32-year-old right-hander went 13-8 with a 3.13 ERA in 34 games (28 starts) in 2015 and posted a 2.33 ERA over three postseason starts.

Blue Jays | Roberto Osuna to start next year?

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 17:14:01 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays RP Roberto Osuna could be a starter or a reliever next season, but the Blue Jays haven't determined his role yet.

Fantasy Tip: Osuna put up a 2.58 ERA and 20 saves in his rookie season with Toronto in 69 2/3 innings and was impressive in the playoffs, too. He'd obviously be much more attractive to fantasy owners in a starting role than closing, but he'd also likely be much less of a strikeout artist (9.7 strikeouts per nine). If he moves to a starting role, he'd be worth a speculative pickup late in deep mixed league drafts.

Blue Jays | Marco Estrada receives qualifying offer

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 09:58:58 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays impending free-agent SP Marco Estrada received a $15.8 million qualifying offer from the team Friday, Nov. 6.

Fantasy Tip: Estrada had a fine year in Toronto, going 13-8 with a 3.13 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 6.5 strikeouts per nine innings. He actually pitched better at hitter-friendly Rogers Centre than he did on the road, too. However, it'd probably be best for Estrada's fantasy value if he left for a more pitcher-friendly environment with his reputation for allowing the long ball.

Blue Jays | Three regulars in Toronto returning

Tue, 03 Nov 2015 09:37:58 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista, 1B Edwin Encarnacion and SP R.A. Dickey all had their 2016 options picked up by the team Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Bautista and Encarnacion are similar aging players with plus-power still, but Encarnacion will fall further in drafts because he has more injury concerns. Dickey is far removed from his Cy Young season with the New York Mets in the National League. He continues to be a matchup play that has more success in the hitter-friendly confines of Rogers Centre, though.

Blue Jays | Aaron Sanchez expected to start

Wed, 28 Oct 2015 18:40:01 -0700

The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to use P Aaron Sanchez as a starting pitcher during spring training. He went 7-6 with a 3.22 ERA in 41 appearances (11 starts) in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Sanchez began the season as a starter before sustaining a back injury in June. He was converted to a reliever during his rehab when the Jays realized they needed help in the eighth inning. A move back to the rotation would increase Sanchez's fantasy value and AL-only owners should keep tabs on him over the next few months.

Blue Jays | Edwin Encarnacion expected to return

Wed, 28 Oct 2015 18:32:00 -0700

The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to exercise their $10 million option on 1B/DH Edwin Encarnacion for the 2016 season, according to multiple sources. If the team declined the option, they would have to pay him a $2 million buyout.

Fantasy Tip: Encarnacion, who will turn 33 before the start of the 2016 season, hit .277 with 39 home runs and 111 RBIs in 146 regular-season games in 2015. He should be selected in the early rounds of all fantasy baseball drafts next spring.
