Blue Jays | Gavin Floyd's role is undecided

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 17:15:28 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays SP Gavin Floyd will be stretched out as a starting pitcher during spring training, although the organization has not made a decision on whether he will start or relieve, according to general manager Ross Atkins.

Fantasy Tip: Floyd is worthy of consideration as a late-round flier in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues if he cracks Toronto's starting rotation. If he winds up in the bullpen, he would likely be used as a long reliever and wouldn't have much value in any fantasy format.

Blue Jays | Toronto to name closer in camp

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 11:51:59 -0800

The Toronto Blue Jays aren't expected to choose a closer until midway through spring training or later.

Fantasy Tip: Drew Storen figures to be the front runner, but he'll have competition from Roberto Osuna and Brett Cecil. All three are worth drafting, but Storen holds a little more value as he appears to have the inside track to the closer gig.

Blue Jays | Josh Donaldson terms

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 09:41:19 -0800

Updating a previous report, Toronto Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson's two-year deal was finalized Wednesday, Feb. 10. He'll earn $11.65 million in 2016 and $17 million in 2017.

Fantasy Tip: Donaldson is at worst at top-three third baseman entering fantasy drafts.

Blue Jays | Josh Donaldson lands two-year deal

Mon, 08 Feb 2016 23:27:56 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson avoided arbitration by signing a two-year, $29 million deal Monday, Feb. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Donaldson is likely battling Nolan Arenado to be the top third baseman taken in fantasy baseball drafts. Either way, he's an elite option no matter the league type.

Blue Jays | Jesse Chavez wins arbitration case

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 09:28:04 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays SP Jesse Chavez won his arbitration hearing Saturday, Feb. 6, and was awarded $4 million. The Blue Jays argued to give him $3.6 million.

Fantasy Tip: Chavez will have a chance to compete for Toronto's final starting rotation spot in spring training, but he may be a better fit for the bullpen. Coming off an injury that ended his 2015 season, Chavez's fantasy value remains minimal, and he'd only be worth a flier in AL-only leagues if he lands in the rotation.

Blue Jays | Gavin Floyd financial details

Sat, 06 Feb 2016 11:03:35 -0800

Updating previous reports, Toronto Blue Jays SP Gavin Floyd signed a one-year deal with a base salary of $1 million. The deal also includes up to $1 million in incentives based on days spent on the active roster. He will receive $500,000 for 90 days and $250,000 for 120 days and 140 days.

Fantasy Tip: It is unknown whether the Jays plan to have Floyd battle for a spot at the back of their starting rotation during spring training or use him in relief, as the Cleveland Indians did at the end of last season. If he's used as a starter, he should be viewed as a late-round flier in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Blue Jays | Toronto to consider extending Encarnacion

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 14:03:52 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Edwin Encarnacion and the team could possibly begin negotiations regarding a contract extension during spring training, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Encarnacion can run a bit hot-and-cold in the batting average department, but the 33-year-old has nonetheless been one of the majors' top power hitters over the last four seasons, averaging nearly 38 homers and 106 RBI over that span. Even at the loaded first-base position, the two-time All-Star is worthy of a top-20 pick in all leagues.

Blue Jays | Toronto to consider extending Bautista

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 14:02:09 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista and the team could possibly begin negotiations regarding a contract extension during spring training, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Bautista is entering his age-35 season, but showed no signs of slowing down last year with 40 homers and 114 RBI in 153 games. Over the last six seasons, he has belted a league-high 227 home runs and ranks second only to Miguel Cabrera in slugging (.555) and OPS (.945). The six-time All-Star remains a top-15 fantasy player in virtually all formats.

Blue Jays | Jose Bautista open to extension

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 11:30:52 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista, who is entering the final year of his contract this season, is open to discussing an extension prior to hitting the open market next winter.

Fantasy Tip: Bautista has been one of baseball's premier power hitters since joining the Blue Jays late in the 2008 season, averaging 37.8 home runs and 97 RBI while earning six consecutive All-Star nods. He hit .250 with 40 homers and 114 RBI in 153 games in 2015 and should be considered as a late first-rounder in all formats again this season.

Blue Jays | Josh Donaldson date set

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 05:38:46 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson's arbitration hearing is set for Feb. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Donaldson is in the top two or three at the position and poised for another big year.

Blue Jays | Gavin Floyd headed to Toronto?

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 18:46:30 -0800

Free-agent SP Gavin Floyd (Indians) is close to signing with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to multiple sources.

Fantasy Tip: If signed, Floyd would likely compete for a spot at the back end of the Jays' starting rotation. He should be monitored by owners in single-universe and cavernous mixed leagues throughout spring training.

Blue Jays | Devon Travis could return in May

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 18:00:50 -0800

The Toronto Blue Jays remain hopeful that 2B Devon Travis (shoulder) can return to action during the month of May, although manager John Gibbons said the wait could be longer.

Fantasy Tip: Travis is continuing to recover from offseason surgery on his left shoulder and is expected to resume baseball activities in April. He could fall down the draft boards to the later rounds because of his injury status despite batting .304 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs in 62 games as a rookie in 2015.

Blue Jays | Toronto negotiating with Josh Donaldson

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 17:14:42 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said the team is "going to work toward a multiyear deal" with 3B Josh Donaldson.

Fantasy Tip: Donaldson and the Jays are scheduled to have a salary arbitration hearing later this month, with the two sides just $450,000 apart. He is seeking a one-year deal worth $11.8 million, while Toronto has countered with an offer worth $11.35 million. Ideally, the team would like to have the 30-year-old slugger locked up for several years, especially if he can duplicate his .297-41-123 stat line from 2015. Donaldson is arguably the top third baseman in baseball and should be a first-round draft selection in all fantasy formats.

Blue Jays | Rogers Centre shifting to dirt infield

Wed, 03 Feb 2016 13:10:24 -0800

The Rogers Centre will have a dirt infield installed for the 2016 season, the Toronto Blue Jays announced Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Realistically, there doesn't project to be significant changes with a the switch in infield surface. It should slow down the infield slightly and could help ground-ball pitchers. Still, Rogers Centre projects to be one of the best hitting environments in the league.

Blue Jays | Drew Storen the closer in Toronto?

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 14:17:09 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays RP Drew Storen looks to be the likely closer for the Blue Jays in 2016 over RP Roberto Osuna, although Toronto could have a competition for the role deep into spring training. There is no rush to make a decision. Storen has more experience as a closer and will be paid $8.375 million. Osuna is a former starter, too, and it could be attractive to have the option of using him for multiple innings as a setup man. RP Aaron Sanchez is a dark horse candidate, but it looks like he'll have the chance to win a starting job this spring.

Fantasy Tip: You'll have to keep a close eye on the competition this spring, but if you're drafting before then, speculate on Storen once the top closers come off the board. Whoever loses the job will lose significant fantasy value as a reliever.
