Blue Jays | R.A. Dickey suffers 12th loss

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 17:47:27 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP R.A. Dickey saw his record fall to 7-12 after losing to the San Diego Padres Wednesday, July 27. The knuckleballer lasted 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on four hits and four walks. He also struck out five.

Fantasy Tip: Dickey is a starting pitcher that's really hard to trust right now in fantasy leagues, as he's now given up five runs or more in three consecutive starts. It's his worst three-start stretch of the season, and things won't get any easier down the stretch considering the division that Toronto plays in. He's someone to avoid using in the coming weeks unless perhaps the right matchup presents itself.

Blue Jays | Devon Travis is key for Toronto

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 09:11:15 -0700

The Toronto Blue Jays are 27-17 with 2B Devon Travis in the starting lineup and 30-27 without him this season.

Fantasy Tip: Win totals don't have a significant impact on fantasy statistics, but it's a clear sign of how valuable Travis is. He's sporting a .286/.328/.451 slash line with 29 runs, six home runs and 24 RBI through just 47 games and is a viable starter in all fantasy formats.

Blue Jays | Marco Estrada pushed back to Friday

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 08:43:26 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP Marco Estrada had his next start pushed back to open the series against the Baltimore Orioles Friday, July 29.

Fantasy Tip: Estrada's first start back from the disabled list went well, as he allowed just two runs through six innings with three strikeouts. Going against the Orioles isn't ideal, and while Estrada has proven to be a solid mid-rotation arm over the past two seasons with Toronto, it isn't out of the question to sit him Friday.

Blue Jays | Roberto Osuna off limits Wednesday

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 08:01:41 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Roberto Osuna is unavailable Wednesday, July 27, along with RP Jesse Chavez. RP Jason Grilli and RP Joaquin Benoit will be called upon to protect late-inning leads.

Fantasy Tip: Grilli might have the upper hand. Benoit has a 5.18 ERA, while Grilli's ERA is 3.63 with a 1.33 WHIP and 50 K's in 34 2/3 innings. His K/9 is the highest it has been since his peak years with the Pittsburgh Pirates. If you have daily pickups, he's worth speculating on today if you're seeking saves.

Blue Jays | Ezequiel Carrera starting in right field

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 07:59:01 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays OF Ezequiel Carrera is starting in right field and batting seventh against San Diego Padres SP Luis Perdomo Wednesday, July 27. Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Toronto has a lot of flexibility with the addition of Melvin Upton Jr., which is highlighted in the Wednesday lineup. Carrera and Smoak could be victims of hits to their playing time going forward, as manager John Gibbons could utilize Edwin Encarnacion at first base more frequently, and Carrera is likely the fifth outfielder on the current depth chart. Outside of cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, Carrera and Smoak are replaceable.

Blue Jays | Melvin Upton starting vs. former club

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 07:52:42 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays OF Melvin Upton Jr. is starting in left field and batting fourth against San Diego Padres SP Luis Perdomo Wednesday, July 27. Blue Jays OF Michael Saunders is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Upton is having a nice season, and now he's going to see consistent playing time in the heart of a potent lineup. Upton could see a few less at-bats with Toronto, but it shouldn't hinder his five-category upside going forward. Sub out Saunders where you can in seasonal leagues Wednesday. There's enough playing time for both Saunders and Upton to remain solid fantasy assets.

Blue Jays | Troy Tulowitzki resting vs. Friars

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 07:33:25 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, July 27. INF/OF Darwin Barney is starting at shortstop and batting eighth against San Diego Padres SP Luis Perdomo Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Sub out Tulowitzki in seasonal leagues where you can Wednesday. After a slow start, he's been solid with 24 runs, 11 home runs, 35 RBI and a .297/.340/.547 slash line over his past 44 games. Barney owns a .393 slugging percentage this season and has limited fantasy upside. He's a potential flier in daily contests Wednesday, but in seasonal leagues, it's best to leave him to cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues.

Blue Jays | Josh Donaldson hits 25th home run

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 21:25:56 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson was 2-for-6 with a double, a home run and three RBI against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, July 26.

Fantasy Tip: Outside of a dismal May, Donaldson has produced like a reigning MVP. He's now hitting .302 with 25 HRs and 74 RBI, making him a must-start in all formats.

Blue Jays | Joaquin Benoit heads to Toronto

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 20:31:26 -0700

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired RP Joaquin Benoit from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for RP Drew Storen Tuesday, July 26.

Fantasy Tip: The veteran Benoit was struggling with a 5.18 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 26 appearances this season. He is only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only fantasy formats at this point of his career.

Blue Jays | Melvin Upton Jr. headed to Toronto

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 05:23:02 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Melvin Upton Jr. was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays for a Class A prospect Tuesday, July 26. Financial terms are unknown, but the deal is expected to be completed Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has bounced back with a .256-16-45 line and 20 steals. Depending on his playing time, he could make a nice impact in fantasy. Entering a hitter's park with that lineup around him should really benefit him.

Blue Jays | Jose Bautista gets on twice in return

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 19:12:49 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista (toe) went 1-for-3 with a walk out of the leadoff spot in his first game back off the disabled list Monday, July 25, against the San Diego Padres.

Fantasy Tip: It was Bautista's first game since June 16. Although he's been disappointing this year to the tune of a .230/.360/.455 slash line, he's still one of the game's premier sluggers and can be returned to starting fantasy lineups. The fact that he got a hit, albeit only a single, in his first game back should at least help him settle in again right away.

Blue Jays | Aaron Sanchez extends win streak to 10

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 18:52:06 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP Aaron Sanchez won his 10th straight decision Monday, July 25, versus the San Diego Padres. The right-hander tossed seven scoreless innings, issuing only three hits and two walks. He also struck out seven.

Fantasy Tip: There is simply nobody on the mound hotter than Sanchez right now. Not only does the 24-year-old continue to win, but he consistently gives his owners standout performances, such as in tonight's assignment. In fact, this was the eighth instance this season in which Sanchez went at least seven innings and allowed one run or less. Just keep trotting him out there.

Blue Jays | Russell Martin back in the lineup

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 12:46:45 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin (knee) is starting behind the plate and batting sixth against San Diego Padres SP Colin Rea Monday, July 25.

Fantasy Tip: Martin missed three games with the knee injury, but he's safe to return to your lineups given his strong play dating back to the beginning of June (.267/.383/.422 slash line with 20 runs and 22 RBI over 35 games). Martin is a viable starter in the majority of seasonal settings.

Blue Jays | Jose Bautista activated from DL

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 12:40:19 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista (toe) was activated from the disabled list Monday, July 25. He is starting in right field and leading off against San Diego Padres SP Colin Rea Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Bautista is an elite power commodity in all fantasy formats, and he should be returned to starting lineups. For the season, the outfielder sits with 41 runs, 12 home runs, 41 RBI and a .230/.360/.455 slash line through just 65 games. His return projects to significantly cut into the playing time of Ezequiel Carrera and Darwin Barney.

Blue Jays | Edwin Encarnacion leaves the yard

Sun, 24 Jul 2016 14:47:50 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Edwin Encarnacion clubbed his 27th home run of the season against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, July 24.

Fantasy Tip: Encarnacion continues to make his case to break the bank as a free agent this offseason, as his homer total ranks third in the majors, while his 87 RBI leads all of baseball. The .265 average is a bit disappointing but right in line with his career mark. It's also the only criticism owners can level on Encarnacion, who needs to be started in fantasy any time he is in the Blue Jays' lineup.
