Falcons | Antone Smith back at practice

Tue, 02 Jun 2015 19:41:21 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Antone Smith (leg) was happy about being able to return to the practice field Tuesday, June 2, for organized team activities (OTAs).

Fantasy Tip: Smith is not currently expected to be in the battle for the top spot, as Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman fight it out. However, there could be plenty of scraps for Smith if he is 100 percent healthy. He had a penchant for long scoring plays last season despite limited touches.

Falcons | Atlanta has competition at running back

Mon, 01 Jun 2015 14:26:42 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RBs Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman will fight for the starting running back position this offseason, as head coach Dan Quinn said they are both battling for it. Quinn added that it's currently difficult to predict how the situation will play out. Freeman is expected to be the No. 1 running back at least until Coleman acclimates to the Falcons and the professional level.

Fantasy Tip: Despite Freeman being the No. 1 back at present, Coleman is expected to his fair share of carries and at least split time with Freeman as part of a committee, if not overtake Freeman for the starting role. Both should be considered in RB3 territory, with Coleman possessing a little more upside.

Falcons | Matt Ryan moving out of pocket more

Fri, 29 May 2015 21:44:52 -0700

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan will move outside the pocket more this season in offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's system.

Fantasy Tip: While he is not an elite fantasy player at the quarterback position, Ryan has proven to be a safe, lower-end QB1. With a speedy weapon like Julio Jones to work with, moving outside the pocket more often could open up some big-play opportunities for Ryan and the offense.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman works with starters

Tue, 26 May 2015 18:29:08 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman worked with the first-team offense during organized team activities Tuesday, May 26.

Fantasy Tip: Freeman will compete with Tevin Coleman for the starting running back job during training camp. Both running backs probably will receive decent playing time during the season. Owners should consider the winner of the competition as a middle-round pick in drafts.

Falcons | Julio Jones attending OTAs

Tue, 26 May 2015 16:16:02 -0700

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones was present for the start of organized team activities Tuesday, May 26, according to a source. Jones has one year remaining on his current contract but there have been no talks yet between the team and Jones regarding a new deal.

Fantasy Tip: It doesn't sound like a holdout is in Jones' plans this offseason. As long as he avoids injury, he's worth an early-round draft pick and is comfortably in top-ten wide receiver territory.

Falcons | Antone Smith hopes to be in RB mix

Mon, 25 May 2015 15:57:13 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Antone Smith (leg) is still recovering from a broken leg, but he hopes to be back in the mix by the start of training camp in late July. "The recovery is going pretty good," Smith said. "I'm up and running. I'm almost full force, but not quite where I need to be. In time, that will take care of itself," said Smith.

Fantasy Tip: Smith was a major big-play threat in 2014. RBs Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman are likely to be ahead of Smith on the depth chart, but he did some value last season as a cheap, flier in GPP tournaments.

Sun, 24 May 2015 13:21:49 -0700

Falcons | Two ATL backs could split carries

Sun, 24 May 2015 13:19:46 -0700

The Atlanta Falcons could use a two-back system this season where RBs Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman wind up receiving equal reps.

Fantasy Tip: From a fantasy football standpoint, both running backs currently project to be RB3s, although they will each receive an equal opportunity to run away with the job during training camp. Freeman is considered to have a slight edge in the pass-catching department, while both players have demonstrated the ability to consistently block during pass protection.

Falcons | Joplo Bartu avoids suspension

Thu, 21 May 2015 16:14:02 -0700

Atlanta Falcons LB Joplo Bartu was fined $50,000 for an alcohol-related offense after a two-game suspension was rescinded, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. Bartu started 27 games over the last two seasons, but he will have to fight for a roster spot in 2015 due to the Falcons' offseason additions.

Falcons | Justin Hardy to be No. 3 WR for ATL?

Thu, 21 May 2015 15:50:49 -0700

Atlanta Falcons WR Justin Hardy is projected as the Falcons' No. 3 receiver behind WRs Julio Jones and Roddy White, according to NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal.

Fantasy Tip: This, of course, remains to be seen, but Hardy could certainly surpass the likes of Devin Hester, Leonard Hankerson, Drew Davis and the like. Even if he does win the No. 3 receiver job, he shouldn't be considered more than WR5.

Falcons | Antone Smith progresses to running

Thu, 21 May 2015 05:33:52 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Antone Smith (leg) has began running during his rehabilitation from a fractured right leg he suffered Nov. 16, 2014. Smith said he is almost running full force. It is unlikely he will be cleared for the beginning of organized team activities Tuesday, May 26, though.

Fantasy Tip: Smith was a weekly big-play threat in 2014, as he scored five touchdowns on just 36 touches before suffering his season-ending injury. When healthy, he'll compete for touches with Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman, but with a new coaching regime in Atlanta, Smith may have difficulty carving out the role he had last season in 2015. Freeman and Coleman are mid-round selections in drafts, with Freeman receiving the edge in PPR formats. Smith is a late-round flier in cavernous leagues, and he is likely best left to the waiver wire in the majority of formats.
