"You have to look at what you can do as a player," DeCoud said. "I feel I am that hybrid safety: play in the box, play against the run and play center field, get off the hashes and make plays. I feel like I have those skill sets."

FalconInsider.com reports the contracts given by the Atlanta Falcons to third-round draft choice CB Chris Owens, fifth-round draft choice OT Garrett Reynolds and sixth-round draft choice LB Spencer Adkins have been rejected by the NFL, according to a league source. A source has told Scout.com's Adam Caplan said the issues are minor and the new contracts should be approved next week.

"Tony will help our offense in a number of ways. One thing he's going to do is that he's a productive blocker and that's important in our offense… As successful as he's been as a receiver, he's a good blocker too and he really doesn't get the credit that he should," Mularkey said.

"It's actually scary how much he's improved and it's only his second year," FB Ovie Mughelli said. Ryan has improved in the weight room, how he reads plays and his arm strength. "He's gotten better in every aspect," Mughelli continued. Head coach Mike Smith said the team has focused on the passing game during their latest organized workouts. "Matt is making good decisions and being accurate with the football," Smith noted. "I don't think those two traits can be overlooked." According to Ryan, his No. 1 goal was making better decisions with the football and he has been watching a ton of film.

Updating a previous item, Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the Atlanta Falcons will be charged more than $7 million in so-called "dead money" after releasing QB Michael Vick Friday, June 12, because of the acceleration of future salary cap prorations. "Dead money" is the term applied to the salary cap charge for a player who is no longer with the franchise. The Falcons will have no further salary cap ramifications for Vick beyond 2009, general manager Thomas Dimitroff confirmed.

WTKR-TV in Norfolk reported Vick's attorneys have worked to solidify potential sources on income outside the NFL and have sought reductions with creditors in how much Vick would have to pay immediately.

ESPN.com reports the father of suspended Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick, Michael Boddie, said he believes his son is a "better man" now than when he went to federal prison camp for 19 months, according to the Newport News Daily Press. "You ever been locked up?" Boddie said. "You have a lot of time to reflect. Looks like he came through it in one piece. I think he'll be a better man because of it." Boddie said he and his son, who have been estranged, exchanged letters while Vick was in prison and they have reconciled. "I'm glad he's home with his fiancée and his children," Boddie said. "I know he's paid the price for that (dogfighting). Now it's time for him to move on."
