Updating a previous report, Texas Rangers OF Alex Rios (thumb, ankle) is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, Aug. 27, to rest his thumb injury that has been bothering him for five weeks now. Rios is hitting just .196 with no home runs and 10 RBIs in 30 games since the All-Star break. "It's sore," Rios said. "It's causing me to make adjustments in my swing that I don't want to do. Those things have implications, and I do things I'm not supposed to be doing. It affects you." The Rangers have no plans to shut Rios down for the remainder of the year, though. He's also been dealing with a sprained ankle since around the All-Star break, which has caused him to use more of his hands in his swing. X-rays on Rios' thumb last week showed no fractures.

Texas Rangers OF Shin-Soo Choo (elbow) was officially placed on the 15-day disabled list with a bone spur in his left elbow. He'll undergo season-ending surgery on his arm sometime in the next two weeks. The procedure is set for Sept. 15 but could be moved up to Friday, Aug. 29, if his illness subsides by then. "By the end of October, he would be 100 percent and have a completely normal ... offseason," general manager Jon Daniels said, explaining why the last-place Rangers didn't want to wait until after the season. "We want everything, from a health standpoint, we want 100 percent for 2015." OF Michael Choice was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move.

Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish (elbow) is unlikely to return to pitch again this year, according to general manager Jon Daniels. Daniels said the team will be extremely cautious in bringing their ace pitcher back in 2014. "With everything else we've dealt with and how important he is, we've said once he's completely asymptomatic and the doctor clears him, we'd get another scan and then if everything is clear, we'd get him back pitching," Daniel said. "By the calendar and how close to the end of the season we are, I don't know that it will allow him to pitch again." Darvish may not be able to get back on a mound for another 10 days to two weeks.
