Rangers | Shin-Soo Choo could hit second

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 13:23:21 -0800

Texas Rangers OF Shin-Soo Choo could hit in the second spot this season, with OF Leonys Martin being given every opportunity to stick in the leadoff spot this spring. A return to the No. 2 spot would allow Choo to hit in the more traditional "production" spot in Texas' lineup. However, if Martin ends up struggling against lefties, Choo could be considered for the top spot.

Fantasy Tip: Choo played in just 123 games in 2014 because of an injury. A return to full health and hitting in the No. 2 spot makes Choo an undervalued commodity in fantasy baseball drafts. He could return to the 20-home run mark and return plenty of profit for his owners.

Rangers | Elvis Andrus, Mitch Moreland behind

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 09:55:35 -0800

Texas Rangers SS Elvis Andrus (knee) and 1B Mitch Moreland (ankle) will not play in the team's spring training opener against the Kansas City Royals Wednesday, March 4. Andrus is reporting improvement in his sore left knee, and the team isn't concerned with his injury. Moreland underwent ankle reconstruction last year, and he's expected to take grounders and run the bases this week, but he's not expected to play until early next week.

Fantasy Tip: Despite a disappointing 2014 season, Andrus has displayed good seasons before, and he could be a nice value pick at a scarce position in the late middle rounds of standard mixed leagues. Andrus has very little power, but he should score plenty of runs and steal plenty of bases.

Rangers | Derek Holland playing long toss

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 09:50:25 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland (shoulder) continues to play long toss after missing Sunday, March 1, with shoulder soreness. Holland isn't expected to make his spring training debut in a game until early next week.

Fantasy Tip: Holland made just five starts last year because of a torn knee ligament, so seeing him dealing with an injury this early in camp isn't the best sign. However, the injury doesn't appear to be serious, and if he doesn't have anymore setbacks, he should have plenty of time before the start of the regular season. Holland, if fully healthy, could be a nice value pick late in deep mixed leagues.

Rangers | Yu Darvish to pitch more inside?

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 10:31:26 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish has a willingness to pitch more inside to hitters this year, as new manager Jeff Bannister has stressed it to his ace. Darvish threw only 30% of his pitches to the inside third of the strike zone or farther against right-handers last year, and he relied heavily on his wipeout slider. Bannister thinks it'll lead to quicker outs for Darvish and then lead to longer outings.

Fantasy Tip: If Darvish enters the 2015 season fully healthy and past the elbow issues that shut him down last year, he should be firmly entrenched as an ace for fantasy baseball owners. A more aggressive approach on the hill for the Japanese righty could lead to bigger and better numbers over a full season.

Rangers | Martin Perez taking four-day break

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 10:12:16 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez (elbow) won't throw for four days after recovering from Tommy John surgery. The team has built in a four-day rest period for Perez after moving him from flat ground to a half-height mound for some of his pitches.

Fantasy Tip: Perez is hoping to return to the team sometime around the All-Star break after undergoing elbow ligament replacement surgery. Because starting pitchers often endure a lack of velocity and struggle with location upon returning from the procedure, Perez's fantasy value probably won't be at peak form until 2016. He may, however, be useful at FantasyScore and in AL-only leagues in spot starts in the second half of the season.

Rangers | Elvis Andrus has sore knee

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 10:08:18 -0800

Texas Rangers SS Elvis Andrus (knee) is being bothered by some knee soreness. He cut short his workout Sunday, March 1, and isn't expected to do anything significant Monday, March 2. However, general manager Jon Daniels doesn't think Andrus' injury is serious at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Andrus' disappointing 2014 season will likely have many forgetting about him. However, he can still run, and he has a track record for success in the big leagues. He's not a bad fall-back option at the 6 for fantasy baseball owners.

Rangers | Derek Holland's shoulder fine

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 10:02:30 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland (shoulder) said his left shoulder has responded well to treatment, and he'll likely throw a bullpen later this week before making his Cactus League debut. Holland was scratched from his outing in an intrasquad game Sunday, March 1, because of his shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: Keep a close eye on Holland this spring and how he bounced back from his injury-plagued 2014 season. If he doesn't suffer any setbacks with his shoulder, Holland will likely be a nice sleeper candidate at the end of mixed league drafts.

Rangers | Yu Darvish looks impressive

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 09:19:14 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish (elbow) impressed teammates with a scoreless inning in an intrasquad game Sunday, March 1. Darvish also explained that he didn't quit on the team at the end of last season when doctors told him to shut it down for the final seven weeks of the season with a right elbow injury. Darvish said he will have a more "aggressive" approach to pitching this year at the suggestion of manager Jeff Bannister. Darvish topped out at 94 mph Sunday and ended the day with a 62 mph curve ball. "He's ready," C Robinson Chirinos said of Darvish. "The way he looked today, he's ready for opening day, and we still have 30 days of spring training. That tells you he's going to get better from now on."

Fantasy Tip: As long as everything continues to look good for Darvish this spring, he should be considered a fantasy ace. He may come at a little bit of a discount than he previously does because of his elbow concerns from last season.

Rangers | Derek Holland scratched

Sun, 01 Mar 2015 07:42:18 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland (shoulder) has been scratched from the exhibition game Sunday, March 1, because of soreness in his shoulder. Holland said he will be fine and is taking a day off.

Fantasy Tip: It does not appear like Holland is dealing with anything serious, but owners should watch the situation over the next few days. Owners in deeper mixed league may consider selecting Holland in one of the later rounds of drafts if he stays healthy.

Rangers | Yovani Gallardo talks maturation

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 14:43:47 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo still possesses the same velocity he did as a rookie in 2007, but his arsenal has evolved. He leaned on his slider 24.6% of the time last season but only 7.3% as a rookie, and he has added a sinking fastball to his repertoire which lead to fewer strikeouts and more ground balls. His ground-ball rate climbed to 52.4% last season and it was just 37.9% as a rookie. "The older you get, the more things you figure out on how to get hitters out," Gallardo said.

Fantasy Tip: Gallardo's durability is perhaps his greatest asset to fantasy owners, but he also posted the lowest ERA (3.51) of his career in 2014, which was a somewhat-rebound season. Projecting forward, the increased ground-ball rate should play favorably at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, however, he is still just a late-round flier in mixed leagues with the move to the American League and a hitter-friendly ballpark.

Rangers | Yu Darvish impresses coach

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 14:21:05 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish (elbow) impressed pitching coach Mike Maddux during live batting practice Wednesday, Feb. 25. "I thought Yu was very good, very sharp," Maddux said. "The guys couldn't pull the trigger on him. And then when they did they had a hard time. His stuff was good across the board."

Fantasy Tip: So far, all reports concerning Darvish are glowing, but they usually are during spring training. Continue to view Darvish as a low-end No. 1 starter. However, the case would be there for top-tier billing without injury risks. Expect Darvish to be drafted early, and he should be considered a solid fantasy ace.

Rangers | Leonys Martin wants to remain at leadoff

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 14:10:27 -0800

Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin, who only hit leadoff in 35 games last year, wants to stick in the role in 2015, and new manager Jeff Bannister appears to be on board. OF Shin-Soo Choo is the other option to hit first, as he was the team's primary leadoff man before being hurt in 2014. Martin has gone over 30 stolen bases in each of the last two years, and he spent much of his offseason working on his baserunning. "I've been a leadoff man my entire career," Martin said. "I'm ready. I want to show I can help my team, get on base and try to score runs."

Fantasy Tip: Martin's back-to-back seasons of 30 stolen bases is comforting when you go to select him in the middle rounds of standard drafts. Hitting leadoff is where he'll have the highest fantasy value, as it'll also boost his runs potential.

Rangers | Jurickson Profar transferred to 60-day DL

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 12:57:55 -0800

Texas Rangers 2B Jurickson Profar (shoulder) has been placed on the 60-day disabled list, effective on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Fantasy Tip: This move was strictly procedural, as Profar will miss the season due to labrum surgery. Profar may be worth drafting in keeper leagues only for 2016 and beyond, but do not draft him at all in 2015-only formats.

Rangers | Adrian Beltre financials juggled

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 04:39:21 -0800

Texas Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre will now earn $16 million in 2015 and $18 million in 2016 as part of his option being picked up Monday, Feb. 23. The two salaries had previously been reversed.

Fantasy Tip: As previously noted, Beltre remains a safe fantasy value at third base, as he has mastered the art of hitting in Texas' ballpark in the dead of summer.

Rangers | Elvis Andrus lighter this year

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 15:36:14 -0800

Texas Rangers SS Elvis Andrus comes into camp this year a little lighter than he was last year, and he's hoping that'll help him reach 40 stolen bases for the second time in his career. Andrus was ill-prepared for the 2014 season, and he hit .263 with 41 RBI, just 38 extra-base hits and was caught stealing a league-high 15 times. He added yoga and pilates to his workout routine this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Andrus' rough 2014 season all around will cause many of your league mates to sour on him this year. However, he's only a year removed from 42 stolen bases and two years removed from a .286 average. He won't ever hit for power, but Andrus presents a nice buying opportunity at a very scarce position.
