Rangers | Nomar Mazara fuels rout

Tue, 31 May 2016 02:40:59 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Nomar Mazara went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in a 9-2 win over the Cleveland Indians Monday, May 30, and he has five home runs and 12 RBI in his last 11 games.

Fantasy Tip: Mazara's power doesn't seem to be going away, and you should continue to start him in all formats.

Rangers | Shin-Soo Choo on a running program

Tue, 31 May 2016 02:32:19 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Shin-Soo Choo (hamstring) is taking batting practice and continuing a running program, but a return date is still undetermined.

Fantasy Tip: Choo has been plagued by injuries the last couple of years. He is worth stashing if you have the space, but feel free to dump him for a more reliable option if available.

Rangers | Mitch Moreland homers in second straight

Sun, 29 May 2016 15:35:28 -0700

Texas Rangers 1B Mitch Moreland went 1-for-4 but hit a go-ahead three-run homer to cap a four-run fourth inning on Sunday, May 29, in a 6-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Moreland also connected on a solo blast in a win over the Pirates on Saturday, May 28.

Fantasy Tip: Moreland is batting .190 and has only two multi-hit games in May, so most mixed-league owners probably don't need to rush to pick him up. Strangely, today's effort gives him three home runs and 10 RBI this month, which is nearly identical to his production in April (three homers, 11 RBI). Owners can feel free to move along here, as Moreland needs to get hot pretty soon if he wants to come anywhere close to last year's numbers (.278, 23 homers and 85 RBI).

Rangers | Prince Fielder ends long homer drought

Sun, 29 May 2016 15:10:14 -0700

Texas Rangers DH Prince Fielder cracked a solo home run for his only hit in four at-bats against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, May 29. The homer was his first since April 19, ending a streak of 131 consecutive at-bats without one.

Fantasy Tip: Batting a frigid .197 following today's games, Fielder is also nickel-and-diming his way near the Mendoza line as well. Since his last off-day on May 16, the 275-pound slugger has recorded a hit in nine of 11 games, although the last eight of those are one-hit efforts. Fielder is bound to climb over .200 and pick up the pace in the power department at some point, but the fact he is a designated hitter only in a number of fantasy leagues means there are plenty of more appealing options.

Rangers | Three Texas starters sitting

Sun, 29 May 2016 10:36:39 -0700

Texas Rangers SS Elvis Andrus, OF Jared Hoying and C Bobby Wilson are not in the starting lineup against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano Sunday, May 29. OF Ryan Rua will start in left field and is batting sixth. C Bryan Holaday will start at catcher and is batting eighth, while 2B Hanser Alberto will start at shortstop and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Rua is hitting .429 with one home run and three RBI against left-handed pitchers and can be a sleeper option in daily fantasy leagues. Alberto and Holaday have not done much at the plate this season and probably should be avoided in most leagues.

Rangers | Jurickson Profar scores twice

Sun, 29 May 2016 06:31:22 -0700

Texas Rangers 2B Jurickson Profar went 2-for-4 with two runs and a triple during the Rangers' 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday, May 28.

Fantasy Tip: Profar has fleeting fantasy value in deeper leagues and could have a solid stretch leading off for the Rangers. It is unlikely he proves enough to stick around once Rougned Odor's seven-game suspension is finished, but Profar is a potential stash in AL-only leagues if demoted.

Rangers | Yu Darvish wins first 2016 start

Sun, 29 May 2016 06:26:32 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish (elbow) allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven batters through five innings during the Rangers' 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday, May 28. Darvish hit 98 mph on the radar gun and was pleased with his outing.

"Physically I felt I could go more innings, but mentally I was like 'I'm done here," Darvish said through an interpreter. "Today I was heating it up pretty good so I felt pretty good."

Fantasy Tip: If there were any concerns, Darvish squashed them Saturday. View the hurler as a fantasy ace in all fantasy formats going forward, but just note, there could be some peaks and valleys along the way given this was his first start since 2014.

Rangers | Joey Gallo sent down

Sat, 28 May 2016 07:51:11 -0700

Texas Rangers 3B Joey Gallo was sent back to the minor leagues Saturday, May 28.

Fantasy Tip: Gallo had only one at-bat with Texas before being sent back down. Unless an injury or another circumstance opens up more playing time at the major league level, Gallo can be ignored in the majority of formats. His elite power combined with improvements in plate discipline could make him an immediate contributor whenever he sees consistent playing time, though.

Rangers | Cole Hamels' win streak snapped

Fri, 27 May 2016 22:24:02 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels was touched up for six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, May 27. It was Hamels' first loss since August 7, 2015, and ended a streak of 12 straight winning decisions.

Fantasy Tip: It was bound to happen. Hamels made 19 starts in between losses, earning the "W" in a dozen of them. The southpaw hasn't been quite as sharp lately -- 4.32 ERA, 1.48 WHIP in his last four starts -- but there's no reason to panic. Weather the storm secure in the knowledge that better days are ahead.

Rangers | Will Jurickson Profar stick with Texas?

Fri, 27 May 2016 15:57:55 -0700

Texas Rangers 2B Jurickson Profar might not receive enough at-bats to remain with Texas after 2B Rougned Odor's seven-game suspension is completed, in the opinion of The Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant.

Fantasy Tip: Profar would likely be helpful for Texas in a depth/utility role, but it might also be at the expense of his development, and the Rangers probably want him to see full-time work. He does have a week-long audition to push the issue, though. For now, view Profar as a fleeting option in cavernous mixed and AL-only formats, but it is a situation to watch.

Rangers | Prince Fielder in career-long homer drought

Fri, 27 May 2016 15:51:25 -0700

Texas Rangers 1B Prince Fielder has gone 32 games and 119 at-bats without a home run, which is the longest drought of his career.

Fantasy Tip: At some point, Texas has to be looking for more in the heart of their lineup, as Fielder has just two home runs this season with a .193/.269/.281 slash line. It is fine to remain patient with Fielder given his track record, but he should be riding the pine and not in your starting lineup.

Rangers | Shawn Tolleson on family medical leave

Fri, 27 May 2016 14:26:50 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson was placed on emergency family medical leave Friday, May 27. Tolleson must be on the leave list at least three days and a maximum of seven.

Fantasy Tip: Tolleson has minimal fantasy value after losing the closer job. He has allowed 18 runs through just 16 innings and doesn't warrant a roster spot at this stage of the season.

Rangers | Jurickson Profar leading off

Fri, 27 May 2016 14:02:57 -0700

Texas Rangers 2B Jurickson Profar is playing second base and batting leadoff against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese Friday, May 27.

Fantasy Tip: With Rougned Odor suspended for the next seven games, Profar should start and set the table for a potent Texas lineup, making him very attractive to DFS gamers. In deep mixed and AL-only leagues he's worth a cheap flyer for the short term, too. Injuries have made Profar a forgotten man these last few years, but he was showing an impressive .284/.356/.426 slash line at Class AAA Round Rock with five home runs, 26 RBI and four steals.

Rangers | Rougned Odor starting suspension Friday

Thu, 26 May 2016 14:33:56 -0700

Updating a previous report, Texas Rangers 2B Rougned Odor will begin serving his seven-game suspension Friday, May 27.

Fantasy Tip: Odor will be eligible to return for the game against the Seattle Mariners Saturday, June 4, so make arrangements to be without him until then. Jurickson Profar will be recalled to play the keystone with Odor out, and Profar's fleeting value makes him a viable add in deep mixed and AL-only leagues, especially since he'll join one of the better offensive lineups in the majors.

Rangers | Rougned Odor's ban reduced to seven games

Thu, 26 May 2016 14:16:18 -0700

Texas Rangers 2B Rougned Odor's suspension was reduced from eight to seven games Thursday, May 26. The suspension was for an on-field altercation with Toronto Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista Sunday, May 15.

Fantasy Tip: Make arrangements to be without Odor for the duration of his suspension. The Rangers have already announced Jurickson Profar will be recalled from Class AAA Round Rock, and he could be an option in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. He has a .284/.356/.426 slash line in the minors and will jump into an excellent lineup.
