Rangers | Martin Perez wins with six strikeouts

Wed, 25 May 2016 00:28:01 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez had six strikeouts in six innings of work Tuesday, May 24, in a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Perez dropped his earned run average from 2.59 to 2.08. Perez had not won in May prior to this victory.

Fantasy Tip: Perez is a much better pitcher than his record and stats indicate. With an ERA just above 2.00 and decent strikeout totals, Perez should have wins under his belt. He is worth the gamble in DFS, weekly and annual leagues despite his 2-4 record, mainly because Perez's pitching is a lot better than the numbers say.

Rangers | Yu Darvish on pitch count

Tue, 24 May 2016 18:15:05 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish (elbow) hopefully will throw 85 to 90 pitches in his start against the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday, May 28, according to pitching coach Doug Brocail. Brocail said Darvish's pitch count will depend on how he looks during the game. He was able to throw 87 pitches in his final rehab start.

Fantasy Tip: Darvish will be making his first start for the Rangers since 2014, and the team likely will be cautious with him. He will be facing the Pirates, which makes him a risky option in daily fantasy leagues. Darvish should be added to starting lineup in all mixed leagues because of his previous success.

Rangers | Rougned Odor ruling expected Thursday

Tue, 24 May 2016 16:44:22 -0700

Texas Rangers 2B Rougned Odor spent roughly three hours in a hearing on his appeal of an eight-game suspension Tuesday, May 24. John McHale Jr., the chief information officer and director of administration, is expected to hand down a final ruling Thursday, May 26. Odor won't be held out of the lineup before then.

Fantasy Tip: Odor provides fantasy owners with considerable power at a position that lacks it, making him a must-own and must-start option in all formats. He could have his suspension shortened, but you should plan for him to at least miss a handful of games starting this weekend. Jurickson Profar is an option to be called up to take Odor's spot, but it'll be a short-term deal.

Rangers | Josh Hamilton expects to play in 2017

Tue, 24 May 2016 09:13:23 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Josh Hamilton (knee), who is out for the season, is expected to be back on the field for the 2017 season, which is the final year of his five-year, $125 million deal. Hamilton has just 170 plate appearances and has eight home runs since he returned to the Rangers.

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to imagine the former MVP having an everyday role moving forward with Texas if he can make it back next season. The 35-year-old is an extreme injury risk and would probably only be worth a late-round flier in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues.

Rangers | Joey Gallo called up to majors

Mon, 23 May 2016 16:43:04 -0700

Texas Rangers 3B Joey Gallo was called up to the team Monday, May 23.

Fantasy Tip: If you have a spot available on your roster, you should probably act quickly to secure Gallo's services. The 22-year-old phenom underwhelmed last year in his first taste of the big leagues, but he's been dominating this season at Class AAA Round Rock, where he's registered a .265/.415/.639 line with eight homers and 20 RBI in just 24 games. With both Shin-Soo Choo and Drew Stubbs landing on the disabled list Monday, there will be openings to get Gallo in the lineup regularly, and don't forget the team can also implement him at both corners of the diamond as well as at designated hitter. He has tremendous upside.

Rangers | Drew Stubbs placed on disabled list

Mon, 23 May 2016 16:26:37 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Drew Stubbs (toe) was placed on the disabled list Monday, May 23.

Fantasy Tip: With both Stubbs and Shin-Soo Choo landing on the DL, this may provide the biggest boost for top prospect Joey Gallo, who was just called up by the team. Although he hasn't played the outfield yet this season, he'll probably get some starts out there to get his bat in the lineup, and he'll also get time at first base and designated hitter. Outfielders Ryan Rya and Jared Hoying -- who was also just promoted -- will benefit, too.

Rangers | Shin-Soo Choo goes back on DL

Mon, 23 May 2016 15:26:13 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Shin-Soo Choo (hamstring) went back on the disabled list Monday, May 23. He strained his left hamstring while running the bases in his first game back from a previous DL stint Friday, May 20, against the Houston Astros.

Fantasy Tip: Choo has had some injury issues in recent years and it's only gotten worse in 2016, as his first extended stint on the sidelines lasted 40 days. Hopefully his latest trip to the DL won't last as long, but it's still troubling to see him getting banged up so often. Jared Hoying was called up for the first time to take his spot, and has some potential in deeper leagues based on his solid start at Class AAA. Ryan Rua benefits, too.

Rangers | Jared Hoying set for MLB debut

Mon, 23 May 2016 15:07:13 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Jared Hoying will be making his major league debut Monday, May 23. He's starting in left field and batting eighth versus Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Nick Tropeano.

Fantasy Tip: Hoying will get his first big league opportunity with Shin-Soo Choo returning to the disabled list. He'll at least have some potential in deep leagues, as he produced a nifty .319/.409/.550 line in 41 games at Class AAA Round Rock.

Rangers | Josh Hamilton out for season

Mon, 23 May 2016 14:50:01 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Josh Hamilton (knee) got a second opinion on his knee. He's set to have surgery on June 8, and will be out for the remainder of the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: The Rangers weren't really expecting anything from their former MVP winner anyway, and luckily for them, they're not the ones paying for most of his massive salary. It's an ominous sign for the 35-year-old Hamilton, who could be nearing the end of his career as he continues to have trouble staying on the field. Ryan Rua and Drew Stubbs will continue to benefit the most in his absence.

Rangers | Rougned Odor's appeal hearing Tuesday

Sun, 22 May 2016 19:00:38 -0700

Texas Rangers 2B Rougned Odor's appeal of his eight-game suspension will be heard Tuesday, May 24, and he is expected to start serving his suspension Friday, May 27, according to league sources.

Fantasy Tip: Odor's fantasy owners will need a plan in place starting this weekend. Jurickson Profar could fill in, and he could make a sneaky option in daily formats until Odor returns.

Rangers | Cole Hamels extends streak, fans 11

Sun, 22 May 2016 16:48:12 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels won his career-best 12th straight decision and struck out a season-high 11 against the Houston Astros Sunday, May 22. Hamels allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits over eight innings.

Fantasy Tip: Hamels isn't a fantasy ace, but he is proving to be a solid No. 2 fantasy starter this season.

Rangers | Shin-Soo Choo back to DL?

Sun, 22 May 2016 13:16:59 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Shin-Soo Choo (hamstring) may be headed for the 15-day disabled list in the next several days, as the team is taking a conservative approach with Choo's injury.

Fantasy Tip: The decision to disable Choo will come down to whether or not Rougned Odor is suspended for the full eight games. Odor will have his appeal hearing early in the week. The team does not want to have a 23-man roster for several games and would rather lose one player at a time. As for Choo's fantasy status, right now it is hampered because of his injury history.

Rangers | Texas sitting three starters

Sun, 22 May 2016 10:30:06 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Shin-Soo Choo (hamstring), 2B Rougned Odor and 1B Mitch Moreland are not in the starting lineup against Houston Astros SP Dallas Keuchel Sunday, May 22. OF Drew Stubbs will start in right field and is batting first. OF Ryan Rua will start at first base and is batting seventh, while 2B Hanser Alberto is starting at second base and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Stubbs, Rua and Alberto have all posted disappointing numbers over the past seven days and can all be avoided in daily fantasy leagues.

Rangers | Elvis Andrus finally homers

Sat, 21 May 2016 23:18:19 -0700

Texas Rangers SS Elvis Andrus hit his first home run of the season Saturday, May 21, in a 2-1 win over the Houston Astros. Andrus is hitting .290 and has a seven-game hitting streak.

Fantasy Tip: Don't panic too much about Andrus' lack of power, as he had a .258-7-62 line a year ago. Anbrus won't hit 30 homers in a season, but he had 154 hits and is still a decent person when it comes to hitting for average and stolen bases (25 a year ago).

Rangers | Cesar Ramos picks up win

Sat, 21 May 2016 23:12:29 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cesar Ramos yielded two hits and one run while fanning four in six innings Saturday, May 21, for his first win this year in his third start and fifth appearance. The Rangers beat the Houston Astros, 2-1.

Fantasy Tip: Ramos has now allowed two runs in 11 innings, a sign that he may be finally adjusting to his new surroundings. Ramos allowed three runs on April 25 and four runs on May 9. Wait and see if he has these yips out of his system before investing a roster spot on him.
