Rangers | Shawn Tolleson showing reliability

Fri, 29 May 2015 21:06:36 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson picked up a save in a 7-4 win over the Boston Red Sox Friday, May 29, giving him six saves in as many chances since taking over as the primary closer last week.

Fantasy Tip: Tolleson has allowed no runs and just two hits in his six saves, and his grip on the closer's role is becoming stronger by the outing.

Rangers | Josh Hamilton homers twice

Fri, 29 May 2015 20:51:42 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Josh Hamilton went 2-for-3 with two solo home runs, three runs scored and a walk in a 7-4 win over the Boston Red Sox Friday, May 29.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton's ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) homers were his first two of the season, and they were a reminder of the type of production he is capable of. Expect his production to fluctuate, but Hamilton makes an intriguing upside play at FantasyScore at his current price.

Rangers | Alex Gonzalez to remain in rotation

Fri, 29 May 2015 17:03:29 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Alex Gonzalez will remain in the starting rotation past his start Saturday, May 30. SP Ross Detwiler (shoulder) will join the bullpen when he is activated from the 15-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez has not been dominant in Class AAA but will receive several starts with the Rangers. Owners should see how Gonzalez pitches in a game or two before considering adding him to their roster or using him on FantasyScore.

Rangers | Ross Detwiler to rehab Saturday

Fri, 29 May 2015 15:57:11 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Ross Detwiler (shoulder) will make a two-inning rehab start for Class AA Frisco Saturday, May 30.

Fantasy Tip: Detwiler ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) will need a few more rehab starts most likely if he's being prepared for a return to the starting rotation. He's only worth a roster spot in AL leagues if he's starting, otherwise he's useless to fantasy owners.

Rangers | Alex Gonzalez to start Saturday

Fri, 29 May 2015 15:43:31 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Alex Gonzalez was officially announced as the starter against the Boston Red Sox Saturday, May 30. It will be his first major league start.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez will come very cheap on FantasyScore tomorrow. The former first-rounder in 2013 was 3-5 with a 4.15 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings at Class AAA Round Rock. The strikeout numbers leave something to be desired, but he could stick in the rotation for a bit if he pitches well. It's best to avoid him in daily contests tomorrow. He's worth a speculative add in deep AL-only leagues.

Rangers | Delino DeShields not starting

Fri, 29 May 2015 13:55:50 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Delino DeShields Jr. is not in the starting lineup Friday, May 29. OF Leonys Martin is starting in center field and hitting leadoff against Boston Red Sox SP Steven Wright.

Fantasy Tip: Martin ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) hasn't really done much for fantasy owners to hang their hat on this year. However, if you're feeling frisky on FantasyScore tonight, he does have some upside while setting the table for a surging Texas lineup Friday. The soft-tossing Wright presents Martin with a nice matchup, too.

Rangers | Leonys Martin leading off

Fri, 29 May 2015 12:48:29 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin is batting first and playing center field against the Boston Red Sox Friday, May 29.

Fantasy Tip: Martin ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) has really struggled this season, but he holds nice upside setting the table for a surging Texas lineup. Martin has just six runs, two home runs and three RBI over his past 56 plate appearances with a .176/.236/.353 slash line. He is worth considering as a risky low-priced flier for FantasyScore contests Friday. His value is plummeting in seasonal formats, and he currently doesn't hold value outside of deep mixed and AL-only formats.

Rangers | Josh Hamilton expects to regain form

Thu, 28 May 2015 19:18:36 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Josh Hamilton said Thursday, May 28, that he is confident that he will eventually put up the type of numbers that made him a star.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) has just 1 hit in his first 11 at-bats since returning to the Rangers, but he has the potential to go on a tear at any time. He remains a high-risk, high-reward option at FantasyScore, but it wouldn't hurt to let him have one solid game at the plate before taking a chance on him.

Rangers | Alex Gonzalez likely to start Saturday

Thu, 28 May 2015 16:39:40 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Alex Gonzalez is likely to be called up from Class AAA Round Rock to make the start against the Boston Red Sox Saturday, May 30. Gonzalez was the team's first-round draft pick back in 2013, and he'll be making his major league debut. SP Phil Klein, who made two spot starts in the rotation, was optioned to Round Rock Thursday, May 28. SP Ross Detwiler (shoulder), who threw a bullpen session Tuesday, May 26, is unlikely to be ready. Gonzalez is 3-5 with a 4.15 ERA in eight starts in the minors this year, and he's given up four earned runs in his last 16 1/3 innings over three starts. He isn't likely to go over five innings with the Rangers this weekend.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez will be very cheap on FantasyScore if he comes up to make his major league debut Saturday against Boston, but he should be ignored everywhere in what's likely to be just one start for the youngster before heading back to the minors.

Rangers | Derek Holland survives 20 throws

Thu, 28 May 2015 15:56:26 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland (shoulder) threw 20 throws from 60 feet Thursday, May 28, with no ill side effects.

Fantasy Tip: Holland is worth monitoring in mixed leagues, but he's not yet worthy of stashing. Holland has suffered one injury after another over the last couple seasons, and he won't be worth owning until he actually takes to the mound for a meaningful game.

Rangers | Matt Harrison still progressing

Thu, 28 May 2015 14:08:07 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Matt Harrison (back) struck out nine batters over five innings during an extended spring training game Thursday, May 28, and he will throw a bullpen session Sunday, May 31.

Fantasy Tip: Harrison is a long way from returning any fantasy value, and he should be left on the waiver wire in the majority of formats. At best, he could reward a speculative stash in AL-only leagues.

Rangers | Prince Fielder beating the shift

Thu, 28 May 2015 13:31:11 -0700

Texas Rangers 1B Prince Fielder, who has 10 home runs, 12 doubles and 38 RBI this year, has done a much better job of going the other way with pitches to beat the shift against him. All of his home runs have been pulled, but 28.2% of his batted balls have gone the opposite way, which is more than 3% from his last full season in 2013. He's also excelling against pitches on the outer third part of the plate, hitting .351 with a .505 slugging percentage and a 20.7 miss percentage compared to a .251 average, .361 slugging percentage and 26.3 miss percentage in 2013.

Fantasy Tip: Fielder ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) has responded nicely after a lost season in 2014, and he's been a steal for those that drafted him this year. The addition of Josh Hamilton to the Texas lineup should give Fielder even more protection, and he should continue to be a strong FantasyScore play.

Rangers | Tommy Field out of lineup Thursday

Thu, 28 May 2015 12:38:39 -0700

Texas Rangers 2B Thomas Field is not in the starting lineup Thursday, May 28, against the Boston Red Sox. 2B Adam Rosales is hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Field ($2,800, 5.6% of cap), a righty, is out of the lineup as the Red Sox have lefty Eduardo Rodriguez on the hill. Rosales ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) has a .357 average with five hits, one home run and a stolen base in the past seven days. He is a decent start at this low cost.

Rangers | Prince Fielder off to scorching start

Thu, 28 May 2015 12:14:35 -0700

Texas Rangers 1B Prince Fielder has hit nine of his 10 home runs in May and has the American League's best batting average at .368. Fielder went to designated-hitter duty this season, and he is using bats from 3B Adrian Beltre's collection.

Fantasy Tip: Fielder ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) is a year removed from a neck issue that may have also hampered his final season with the Detroit Tigers. Surgery, a new attitude, and Beltre's bats appear to have helped out. A lot of it is also attributed to Fielder, who is now a must-start in FantasyScore leagues.

Rangers | Ross Detwiler throws 'pen

Wed, 27 May 2015 13:53:39 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Ross Detwiler (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, May 26, but it's unknown if he'll return to the starting rotation when he's healthy.

Fantasy Tip: Detwiler ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) is 0-5 on the year and is sporting a 6.95 ERA, so he's strictly an AL-only option for owners just looking for a warm body if he returns to the rotation. You should ignore him at FantasyScore.
