Texas Rangers news, rumors and injuries

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels was touched up for six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, May 27. It was Hamels' first loss since August 7, 2014, and ended a streak of 12 straight winning decisions.
Fantasy Tip: It was bound to happen. Hamels made 19 starts in between losses, earning the "W" in a dozen of them. The southpaw hasn't been quite as sharp lately -- 4.32 ERA, 1.48 WHIP in his last four starts -- but there's no reason to panic. Weather the storm secure in the knowledge that better days are ahead.

Texas Rangers 2B Jurickson Profar might not receive enough at-bats to remain with Texas after 2B Rougned Odor's seven-game suspension is completed, in the opinion of The Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant.
Fantasy Tip: Profar would likely be helpful for Texas in a depth/utility role, but it might also be at the expense of his development, and the Rangers probably want him to see full-time work. He does have a week-long audition to push the issue, though. For now, view Profar as a fleeting option in cavernous mixed and AL-only formats, but it is a situation to watch.

Fantasy Tip: At some point, Texas has to be looking for more in the heart of their lineup, as Fielder has just two home runs this season with a .193/.269/.281 slash line. It is fine to remain patient with Fielder given his track record, but he should be riding the pine and not in your starting lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Tolleson has minimal fantasy value after losing the closer job. He has allowed 18 runs through just 16 innings and doesn't warrant a roster spot at this stage of the season.

Fantasy Tip: With Rougned Odor suspended for the next seven games, Profar should start and set the table for a potent Texas lineup, making him very attractive to DFS gamers. In deep mixed and AL-only leagues he's worth a cheap flyer for the short term, too. Injuries have made Profar a forgotten man these last few years, but he was showing an impressive .284/.356/.426 slash line at Class AAA Round Rock with five home runs, 26 RBI and four steals.

Fantasy Tip: Odor will be eligible to return for the game against the Seattle Mariners Saturday, June 4, so make arrangements to be without him until then. Jurickson Profar will be recalled to play the keystone with Odor out, and Profar's fleeting value makes him a viable add in deep mixed and AL-only leagues, especially since he'll join one of the better offensive lineups in the majors.

Texas Rangers 2B Rougned Odor's suspension was reduced from eight to seven games Thursday, May 26. The suspension was for an on-field altercation with Toronto Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista Sunday, May 15.
Fantasy Tip: Make arrangements to be without Odor for the duration of his suspension. The Rangers have already announced Jurickson Profar will be recalled from Class AAA Round Rock, and he could be an option in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. He has a .284/.356/.426 slash line in the minors and will jump into an excellent lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Injuries have taken their toll on Profar's development as he hasn't played in the majors since 2013. He has been solid for Round Rock with a .284/.356/.426 slash line and will have fleeting value in deep mixed and AL-only leagues for the duration of Odor's suspension. Stay tuned for updates.

Fantasy Tip: Odor is allowed to play while the appeal for his eight-game suspension is being considered and a ruling is expected within the next day or two. Jurickson Profar could be summoned from the minors to play the keystone position for a short period of time or the team could turn to Hanser Alberto, although the latter would not be a great fantasy option.

Fantasy Tip: Mazara went 6-for-9 with two home runs and five RBI during the three-game series against the Angels and is batting .320 through 39 games this year. He makes an excellent outfield option in both seasonal and daily fantasy formats.

Fantasy Tip: Lewis recorded the victory despite having his shortest outing of the season and seeing his ERA rise from 2.75 to 3.38, thanks to more-than-adequate run support. He should be viewed as a somewhat risky play for his next start against the Cleveland Indians Tuesday, May 31.
Wed, 25 May 2016 11:50:10 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Holland will take on the Cleveland Indians, and he has been better of late. He has lowered his ERA nearly a run to 5.21 in his last two starts. He'll be pitching on an entire week's worth of rest, and rust could be an issue. He's not a strong option outside of AL-only depth for now.
Wed, 25 May 2016 07:56:52 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Once the ruling is levied, he's likely to miss close to a week of action. Jurickson Profar has a .283-5-26 line at Class AAA Round Rock. He could come up and see a week of action or so. He's worth having in AL-only leagues and a speculative grab in mixed leagues if you're thin at MI. The team could opt to roll with Hanser Alberto for a week, but his fantasy value is pretty low.

Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez had six strikeouts in six innings of work Tuesday, May 24, in a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Perez dropped his earned run average from 2.59 to 2.08. Perez had not won in May prior to this victory.
Fantasy Tip: Perez is a much better pitcher than his record and stats indicate. With an ERA just above 2.00 and decent strikeout totals, Perez should have wins under his belt. He is worth the gamble in DFS, weekly and annual leagues despite his 2-4 record, mainly because Perez's pitching is a lot better than the numbers say.

Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish (elbow) hopefully will throw 85 to 90 pitches in his start against the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday, May 28, according to pitching coach Doug Brocail. Brocail said Darvish's pitch count will depend on how he looks during the game. He was able to throw 87 pitches in his final rehab start.
Fantasy Tip: Darvish will be making his first start for the Rangers since 2014, and the team likely will be cautious with him. He will be facing the Pirates, which makes him a risky option in daily fantasy leagues. Darvish should be added to starting lineup in all mixed leagues because of his previous success.
