Fantasy Tip: Cobb missed most of the 2015 season due to Tommy John surgery and is not expected to return before August in a best-case scenario. He could be worth a late-round flier in AL-only or cavernous mixed leagues.

Tampa Bay Rays OF Corey Dickerson is expected to serve as the club's primary designated hitter if 1B James Loney is traded. OFs Brandon Jennings, Kevin Kiermaier and Steven Souza Jr. would play left field, center field and right field respectively, with OF Brandon Guyer serving as the fourth outfielder and a starting option versus left-handed pitching.
Fantasy Tip: Dickerson hit .304 with 10 home runs and 31 RBIs in 65 games for the Rockies last season and said he would have no problem serving as a DH. He could fall to the middle rounds of drafts for AL-only and deep mixed leagues because of the move away from Coors Field.

Fantasy Tip: Clippard is a solid ratios reliever to snag late in drafts.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly, if he can remain healthy, has considerable upside as a SP3.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly and the Rays have argued the first arbitration case of the year. Smyly is asking for a raise from $2.65 million to $3.75 million, while Tampa argued for $3.2 million. A decision is expected Thursday, Feb. 4. Smyly went 5-2 with a 3.11 ERA in 12 starts last year with 77 strikeouts and 20 walks in 66 2/3 innings.
Fantasy Tip: Smyly made an encouraging return from a torn shoulder labrum in 2015, striking out 10.4 hitters per nine innings in his 12 starts. He's undervalued in the late middle rounds and is a nice pickup to round out your fake pitching staff.

Fantasy Tip: The Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Washington Nationals are reportedly searching for outfield help and could be interested in either Jennings or Guyer if they are made available. Both players should only be considered for single-universe and cavernous mixed formats.

Fantasy Tip: Colome went 8-5 with a 3.94 ERA in 43 appearances (13 starts) last season, with 88 strikeouts over 109 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old right-hander could be of interest to owners in AL-only fantasy leagues and he could see an occasional save opportunity on days when CL Brad Boxberger is unavailable.

Updating previous reports, Tampa Bay Rays 1B/OF Steve Pearce's one-year contract is worth $4.75 million. The deal also includes performance bonuses based on the number of plate appearances reached. Pearce will receive $125,000 for reaching 400 and 425 plate appearances and $250,000 for 500, 525, 550 and 575 plate appearances. If he is traded, he will receive a one-time bonus worth $250,000.
Fantasy Tip: Pearce is expected to split time between first base and designated hitter, with an occasional start in the outfield against left-handed pitching. He hit .218 with 15 home runs and 40 RBIs in 325 at-bats for the Orioles in 2015 and could be a decent buy-low option from a fantasy standpoint.

Tampa Bay Rays RP Brad Boxberger is now Tampa's sole closer after they traded RP Jake McGee to the Colorado Rockies Thursday, Jan. 28. RPs Xavier Cedeno and Enny Romero are the only left-handers in the bullpen now, alongside right-handed RPs Alex Colome, Steven Geltz, Danny Farquhar and Andrew Bellatti.
Fantasy Tip: Boxberger struggled in the second half last year, but now he has much more leeway and rope as Tampa's ninth-inning closer. The right-hander had a 3.71 ERA last year and a career-high 41 saves.

Fantasy Tip: Stay tuned for the other pieces of this trade. Right off the bat, moving out of Coors Field to a more hitter-friendly stadium is bad news for Dickerson's overall fantasy value, as he hit only .257 with five home runs on the road in 2015. This could present a buying opportunity in the middle rounds, however, since most will be down on Dickerson.

Free-agent SS Ian Desmond (Nationals) has a number of connections to the Tampa Bay Rays, but his expected contract demands, and the Rays having to forfeit their No. 13 overall pick in the upcoming 2016 Amateur Draft if they sign Desmond are obstacles preventing a deal.
Fantasy Tip: Desmond's batting average and OPS have dropped in each of the past four seasons, and he didn't reach the 20-stolen base mark in 2015. Entering his age-30 season, his offensive prime could be behind him, and you'll want to be wary of targeting him too early in drafts leading into the season.

Colorado Rockies OF Corey Dickerson may be the most likely trade option for the Rockies, as he'd require less of a return than OF Charlie Blackmon, according to sources. The Tampa Bay Rays are involved with Dickerson.
Fantasy Tip: Dickerson was a disappointment because of his injury last year. However, when healthy he has plenty of power, but a move away from Coors Field would limit his upside considerably.

Tampa Bay Rays INF Richie Shaffer could find himself in danger of not making the 25-man roster, with Steve Pearce, Logan Morrison and James Loney expected to share time at first base and designated hitter.
Fantasy Tip: The soon-to-be 25-year-old Shaffer batted just .189 last season but showed a promising amount of power, with three doubles and four home runs in 74 at-bats. Pearce and Morrison are expected to get the lion's share of the playing time and Loney could have all or part of the $8 million remaining on his contract eaten so that he can be moved to another team.
Thu, 21 Jan 2016 10:24:28 -0800
Fantasy Tip: Pearce could be a nice buy-low in real life and fantasy. He's expected to DH, play first base against lefties and some outfield.
Fri, 15 Jan 2016 10:31:17 -0800
Fantasy Tip: LoMo has been plagued by injuries, but he's the kind of late flyer you can grab that can make a difference on a championship roster with his power.
