St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday suggested to the team this winter that he could begin working out at first base but is unsure how much time he'll get at the position once official workouts begin.
Fantasy Tip: Brandon Moss appears to be the early favorite at first, although a slimmed-down Matt Adams figures to push him for playing time. Holliday is coming off a rare injury-plagued season, so the 36-year-old seven-time All-Star could see a bit of a boost to his late-round fantasy stock with added positional eligibility.

Fantasy Tip: Oh figures to set up Trevor Rosenthal and could have some ratios value in mixed leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Molina may not be ready for Opening Day and Pena is little more than a backup that can be pressed into starting duty for a few weeks. The club needs more help, so monitor who the Cardinals get.

Fantasy Tip: This is not as alarming as it sounds, because Rosenthal just reached arbitration. Still, he is one of the top closers in the National League and should be one of the top relievers off the board in NL drafts.

St. Louis Cardinals 1Bs Matt Adams and Brandon Moss will compete for the starting first base job in spring training, and Moss will have the inside track, in the opinion of MLB.com's Paul Casella. Both players hit from the left side, but Adams has a line of just .197/.230/.317 in his career against left-handed pitchers.
Fantasy Tip: Moss has the experience and Adams has youth and much more pop on his side. Both first basemen are coming off down years and will be cheap in fantasy drafts. This could be a straight platoon with Adams facing righties and Moss facing lefties, for the most part. Adams is more attractive to fantasy owners because of his power, even if he's only playing against right-handers.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Marco Gonzales, whose 2015 season was hampered by shoulder problems, may be out of the rotation entering spring training. "I've already hit the restart button," Gonzales said. "That disappointment kind of turned into my work ethic this offseason and turning that into me being healthy."
Fantasy Tip: Gonzales saw his chances at the rotation dim when Mike Leake was signed, and the rotation figures to be Adam Wainwright, Jaime Garcia, Michael Wacha, Carlos Martinez and Leake. Right now Gonzales may make a decent sleeper pick in the late rounds of NL and mixed drafts, because he may be one injury away from a rotation spot.

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong wants to bat leadoff this season, and manager Mike Matheny was encouraged by Wong's campaigning. "For me to hear that from Kolten is kind of just him looking at the landscape of our club and thinking, 'How can I jump into this and help us more?' And he thinks him being at the top of the order could allow him freedom to do other things. I'm excited to watch what he does," Matheny said.
Fantasy Tip: Following a strong start to the season, Wong struggled down the stretch last year with a .238/.292/.322 slash line and just 27 runs, two home runs, 24 RBI and five stolen bases after the All-Star break. His stock might be deflated enough to make him a real bargain at the later stages of drafts this season. He is just entering his offensive prime, after all.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) will begin a throwing program Tuesday, Jan. 19, after rehabbing his right shoulder all offseason. Martinez said his shoulder is at about 90% health, and he doesn't expect any restrictions in spring training.
Fantasy Tip: The Tsunami's Grade 2 shoulder strain was a big scare, but he sounds like he's past it. He'll be an SP3 with upside in fantasy.

Fantasy Tip: After teasing with plus-upside for a couple seasons as a reliever and only making eight starts, Martinez flourished last season with a sterling campaign. He posted a 3.01 ERA, 3.21 FIP, 1.29 WHIP and a 9.2 K/9 with 14 wins in 2015, and as long as there are no setbacks leading into 2016, he should be viewed as a middle-round option with upside in seasonal drafts.

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (thumb) will have his left thumb in a hard cast until mid-February. The biggest unknowns are related to strength, as the Cardinals won't know how Molina's left thumb responded to a second surgery until it's free from that cast. Instead of catching bullpen sessions and getting his swing in tune, Molina will spend the early days of Spring Training building strength. They're still cautiously optimistic he can return by the season opener April 3.
Fantasy Tip: Molina has entered his fantasy decline, but the position isn't booming with upper-level talent. He's a midrange option at the position.

St. Louis Cardinals OF Tommy Pham received a new contact lens prescription this offseason and admitted that his vision started to drift in 2015. Earlier in his career, he was diagnosed with keratoconus, a narrowing of the cornea that limited his vision without the help of contacts or glasses. Pham was not comfortable changing his prescription during the season. Pham explained how when tracking a baseball, his eyes would move but his prescription wouldn't move with it, so he'd be watching the ball from the blurred edges of the contact.
Fantasy Tip: Pham had a few dynamite weeks last season but doesn't have a clear path to a starting role. He'll be an interesting NL-only piece.

Fantasy Tip: Adams was limited to just 60 games last season, and he struggled with a .240/.280/.377 slash line when on the field. He is an endgame dice roll in all fantasy formats, and likely should be left on the waiver wire in the majority of seasonal leagues. That said, there is serious power potential, and monitoring Adams this spring is encouraged.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal is a top-five closer option in fantasy.
Fri, 15 Jan 2016 10:02:08 -0800
Fantasy Tip: Moss is without a full-time position but has power potential for NL-only leagues.

Korean RP Seung-Hwan Oh agreed to an undisclosed deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, pending a physical, Monday, Jan. 11. The 33-year-old right-hander has a fastball that works from 93 mph to 95 mph, and a hard slider that compares to a cut fastball. He also has a slower breaking ball.
Fantasy Tip: Oh will work in setup duty but could have some late fantasy value for ratios.
