Seattle Mariners news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Sanchez was ranked as Seattle's 11th-best prospect last year by MLB.com, but he won't have a chance to realize his potential.

Fantasy Tip: Elias enjoyed a strong second half last year, and while he is unlikely to start 2015 in the rotation, he should see some opportunities throughout the year. He could make a solid spot starter at FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Smith will be part of a right-field platoon this spring, and it sounds like this injury isn't serious. Smith still is worth a late-round selection in AL drafts as he could see some decent playing time.

Seattle Mariners SP Taijuan Walker appears to have won the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation, following the club's demotion of SP Roenis Elias to Triple-A Tacoma. However, manager Lloyd McClendon has not confirmed that the job is his, noting that SP Erasmo Ramirez is still in camp. SPs Felix Hernandez, James Paxton, Hisashi Iwakuma and J.A. Happ have already locked up the first four spots in the rotation.
Fantasy Tip: The 22-year-old Walker has pitched well enough to earn the job this spring, carrying a streak of 18 scoreless innings into his next scheduled start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Monday, March 30. He was already worthy of being drafted in AL-only leagues and now it appears that owners in mixed leagues should have him on their radar as well.

Fantasy Tip: The team downplayed it, but it's something to monitor as the regular season nears. Iwakuma is well worth his $7,000 (14.0% of your cap) price tag on FantasyScore if it dissipates.

Seattle Mariners 2B Rickie Weeks hit leadoff Wednesday, March 25. Manager Lloyd McClendon previously endorsed OF Austin Jackson as the teams leadoff hitter. "I like Rickie as a leadoff hitter, too," McClendon said. "Austin led off yesterday, Rickie is leading off today. I'm just playing with things. That's all."
Fantasy Tip: Weeks ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) will serve in a platoon role with the Mariners. He'll receive the bulk of his playing time against left-handed pitchers and sharing outfield duties with Dustin Ackley. His role limits him to having AL-only league value, but he's a solid, thrifty pick in FantasyScore games due to his hitting prowess against southpaws. A move to the leadoff spot would only further enhance his FantasyScore appeal.

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino said before the start of spring training that he would be focused on driving the ball the opposite way, and early returns are encouraging in spring action. Zunino is hitting .345 through 11 games with three home runs and seven RBI. He set a team record in 2014 for catchers by hitting 22 homers, and he also added 20 doubles. However, his on-base percentage (.254) was the second lowest in the league among players with at least 450 plate appearances. Zunino also led the team in 2014 with 158 strikeouts, and cutting down on swings and misses has been a point of emphasis for him this spring. He also admits to being a bit fatigued last year, so he tailored his offseason workouts to increase his durability.
Fantasy Tip: Zunino is young and part of a lineup that should be significantly improved. He's a late-round target at the catching position, and if he can improve his strikeout totals and get on base more, he's a sleeper option that could really pay off.

Fantasy Tip: It appears the club wants to get Weeks into the lineup a little more, as his path at second would be blocked (barring injury) by Robinson Cano. Logan Morrison, Willie Bloomquist and Dustin Ackley also play first base, so Weeks could get a few more at-bats. For now, Weeks carries lesser fantasy value than he did in Milwaukee with the Brewers.

Fantasy Tip: Seager ($5,800; 11.6% of your cap) should be fine and is still a solid 3B option on FantasyScore for Opening Day.

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is ticketed to catch somewhere around 140 to 145 games behind the plate in 2015, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. Zunino started 125 games last year at catcher and played in five more games as a reserve. However, only 10 catchers have started at least 140 games in the last 15 years.
Fantasy Tip: If you prefer to hold off and wait on your starting fantasy catcher, Zunino could be your guy in the later rounds of drafts. He swings and misses a lot, but he has a stable skill set with the stick and can leave the yard often. He's also hitting in a much-improved Seattle offense. Zunino could be a potential bargain at catcher.

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (forearm) will make his Cactus League debut Sunday, March 22, against the Texas Rangers after reporting no problems following his three-inning simulated game Tuesday, March 17. He's been slowed by a sore forearm this spring, but he said he'll be ready to go for the regular season.
Fantasy Tip: Paxton is an up-and-coming starter in the M's rotation, and most drafters probably won't be on his scent, especially because of his injury this spring. He's a very cheap end-game target in deep mixed leagues.
Tue, 17 Mar 2015 12:01:47 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Paxton already has a spot guaranteed in the starting rotation, so this is good news on top of good news. Paxton is worth a late-round pick in some leagues because of his upside.

Seattle Mariners SP Danny Hultzen was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma Sunday, March 15. Hultzen missed all of 2014 after undergoing reconstructive left shoulder surgery. However, he came to camp healthy and was showing signs of being the top prospect that Seattle drafted him to be with the second overall pick in 2011. He must now build up arm strength in the minors, and the team's focus is to have him fully ready to go in 2016. Manager Lloyd McClendon said the team will err on the side of cautious with Hultzen this year, especially with his number of innings. Seattle would like him to specifically pitch in warm weather early in the minor league season, meaning he may stay in extended spring training instead. McClendon has an innings limit for the young pitcher, but he won't disclose it.
Fantasy Tip: Hultzen is a promising young pitching prospect for the M's, but with an innings limit this year, he probably won't be of much use in standard mixed leagues. He could be a daily play at FantasyScore whenever he comes up, but his worth is mainly relegated to deep AL-only and dynasty leagues in 2015.

Seattle Mariners SS Chris Taylor (wrist) will be sidelined four to six weeks because of a broken right wrist. He suffered the injury after getting hit by a pitched ball against the Milwaukee Brewers Friday, March 13, on a play that was ruled to be a foul tip. He remained in the game and reached on a single but will now open the regular season on the disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: Prior to getting injured, Taylor was in a competition with SS Brad Miller to be the club's starting shortstop and had been doing well in Cactus League play. Miller has more offensive upside than Taylor and could be worth drafting in the later rounds of AL-only and deep mixed leagues.
Wed, 11 Mar 2015 21:52:27 -0700
Fantasy Tip: With Cano away it has been Brad Miller and Chris Taylor seeing time at second base in his absence.
