Seattle Mariners news, rumors and injuries

Seattle Mariners OF/DH Nelson Cruz is not in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Chris Bassitt Sunday, Oct. 4. OF Franklin Gutierrez is batting third and serving as the designated hitter, while 1B/OF Mark Trumbo will bat seventh and play right field.
Fantasy Tip: Gutierrez ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has just one hit in his last 11 at-bats and isn't a recommended FantasyScore option today. Trumbo ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) is hitting .273 with a home run and two RBIs over the past week but you can probably find better outfield alternatives for a similar price.

Fantasy Tip: Cano ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) is scheduled to undergo sports hernia surgery next week and has been playing through the injury since July. It hasn't impacted his production, though, as Cano owns a .332/.389/.544 slash line with 43 runs, 15 home runs and 49 RBI since the All-Star break.

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma allowed two runs on nine hits in seven innings against the Oakland Athletics Friday, Oct. 2. He struck out eight batters and did not walk any batters during the game.
Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($8,800, 17.6% of cap) has allowed three runs or fewer in 11 of his last 12 starts and will finish the season with nine wins and a 3.54 ERA. Iwakuma could be a middle to late rounds in drafts next season.

Fantasy Tip: The sports hernia hasn't interfered with Cano's ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) production, so there is no reason to treat him any differently over the final weekend of the season. Continue to start him with confidence in seasonal leagues. His matchup against Athletics SP Aaron Brooks ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) Friday, Oct. 2, is a prime spot to utilize him at FantasyScore, too.

Fantasy Tip: Since July, 1, Cano ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) owns a .331/.384/.536 slash line with 50 runs, 16 home runs and 51 RBI. He is a notoriously slow starter, and seasonal owners should target him in trade negotiations early in the 2016 season if he starts weaker than expected. Continue to check back for updates, but Cano is likely to play out the rest of this season and be ready for spring training next year.

Seattle Mariners OF Nelson Cruz hit his 44th homer of the season Wednesday, Sept. 30, in a 7-6 loss to the Houston Astros. Cruz is one home run behind Baltimore Orioles 1B Chris Davis for the overall lead.
Fantasy Tip: Cruz ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) is actually winding down a little following his monster season. He has a .111 average in the last seven days. The best thing to do is leave Cruz on the bench as that price tag is a little high considering his slump.

Fantasy Tip: Seasonal owners can safely replace Hernandez ($8,900, 17.8% of cap) for a streaming option over the final days of the season. Hernandez only struck out 191 batters this season, and his 3.53 ERA was his highest mark since the 2008 season, which was also the last time he didn't top 200 punchouts. Entering his age-30 season, and with 2262 1/3 innings on his resume, a further decline shouldn't surprise anyone. Be careful not to overdraft Hernandez in 2016.
Wed, 30 Sep 2015 01:13:29 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Hernandez ($8,900, 17.8% of cap) hasn't had the best of luck in the past month of starts, so even if he earns another turn you may want to avoid using it. Wait until he's had an offseason of rest.

Seattle Mariners 2B Robinson Cano hit his 20th homer of the season Tuesday, Sept. 29. He is the eighth second baseman to hit 20 home runs in at least six seasons in Major League Baseball history. Cano also extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
Fantasy Tip: Cano ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) overcame a very slow start to his season and posted decent numbers. Keep him in your lineup if he starts, as the team wants him to close out strong and prepare for 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton won't be guaranteed a starting spot in the M's rotation next year, so he's unlikely to be drafted in shallow mixed leagues in 2016.
Tue, 29 Sep 2015 15:07:11 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Jones ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) shouldn't be considered by FantasyScore gamers tonight. He's batting just .120 (3-for-25) in his short time on the major league roster this year.
Tue, 29 Sep 2015 00:53:34 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Paxton ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) should be dropped in your leagues. The temptation is there to keep Paxton, but the reality is he might need a change of scenery and there may not be room for him in the rotation.
Mon, 28 Sep 2015 15:47:22 -0700
Fantasy Tip: The Mariners will likely make it a bullpen start against Houston, which isn't great for fantasy purposes. Whoever receives the starting nod for Seattle isn't worth using in any fantasy format Wednesday, including FantasyScore. Paxton ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) isn't worth holding onto in seasonal leagues, either.
Sun, 27 Sep 2015 11:08:43 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Hicks ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) is just 1-for-27 at the plate this season and should be ignored for FantasyScore purposes.
Sun, 27 Sep 2015 11:08:14 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Although Miller ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is 6-for-13 with a double, a home run and four RBIs over the past seven days, FantasyScore owners may want to avoid using him against Weaver. He is just 2-for-17 versus the right-hander in his career.
