Seattle Mariners news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: After leading the league in homers in 2014, Cruz ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) has picked up where he's left off, homering in his last five games, with six homers overall. Even better news is he's done it all in pitcher-friendly parks, even though he's yet to homer in Seattle. Ride the streak while it lasts at FantasyScore.

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney has had a couple of bad outings of late, including a blown save and loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday, April 14, but manager Lloyd McClendon plans to ride out the storm with Rodney. Last year, Rodney blew just three saves in 51 attempts, but he also allowed at least one runner in 47 of 69 outings, including 34 of his 51 save chances. If McClendon chooses to go in another direction, RPs Danny Farquhar and Tom Wilhelmsen (on the disabled list) have closing experience, and RP Carson Smith has closer's stuff.
Fantasy Tip: Rodney owners should be a bit worried by his early-season struggles, especially at age 38. Rodney likely has somewhat of a long leash because of his 2014 season in Seattle, but saves poachers should be looking at Yoervis Medina and Farquhar in case Rodney continues to stumble. Smith is an intriguing bullpen arm, but he might be too far down the pecking order to matter.

Fantasy Tip: The Athletics got to Hernandez ($9,300, 18.6% of cap) in his last outing, but he remains a top-tier starting pitcher for daily contests. The only concern is whether you can fill out a competitive lineup with so much cap space allotted to King Felix. Typically, there are plenty of hitter discounts to enable spending up for top arms, though.

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney suffered his first blown save since July 20 of last year in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday, April 14. It was his second straight rough outing after he gave up four runs in a non-save situation Sunday, April 12. Rodney said his velocity is "fine," but his location has not been sharp. "It's only eight games," Rodney said. "I'm going to prepare myself for tomorrow and try to be ready, because I know I've got my stuff."
Fantasy Tip: Rodney owners have to take the good with the bad. It's early in the season, too, so those that own him shouldn't be all that worried in early April. The good news is that he has plenty of job security in Seattle as the ninth-inning fireman.

Seattle Mariners 1B Logan Morrison is not in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Dodgers SP David Huff Tuesday, April 14. SS Willie Bloomquist is starting at first base and hitting eighth in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Morrison is sitting tonight while the team faces a lefty. Bloomquist ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is a defensive specialist and should be ignored in FantasyScore contests.

Seattle Mariners OF Rickie Weeks is starting in left field and hitting leadoff against Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed SP David Huff Tuesday, April 14. Both OFs Dustin Ackley and Seth Smith will start on the bench.
Fantasy Tip: Weeks ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) is involved in a platoon situation in the outfield for the M's. He's a career .261 hitter against lefties, too, and he clubbed seven of his eight home runs in 2014 off southpaws. That'll make him a cost-effective, sleeper pick at FantasyScore on games that he's playing, and a matchup against Huff Tuesday could work in his favor.

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (quadriceps, ankle) is expected to be good to go for his start Saturday, April 18, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. However, Seattle will wait to make a decision until after they see him throw Wednesday, April 15.
Fantasy Tip: If Hernandez ($9,300, 18.6% of cap) is able to make his start Saturday against the Texas Rangers, he should be a strong play at FantasyScore against a Texas team that is already dealing with several injuries and is a weaker offensive opponent.

Seattle Mariners OF Nelson Cruz hit two solo home runs in an extra-innings loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday, April 13. His nine interleague home runs last year led the majors. Cruz also hit the 200th home run of his career in the game.
Fantasy Tip: Cruz ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) now has four home runs already this year after posting a career-high 40 jacks in 2014 with the Baltimore Orioles. Ride him while he's hot at FantasyScore. He has an excellent matchup Tuesday, too, against Dodgers' lefty starter David Huff. Cruz hit .314 with eight home runs against southpaws last season.

Seattle Mariners RPs Fernando Rodney, Danny Farquhar and Yoervis Medina are not available to pitch Monday, April 13, unless it's an emergency, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. It's unknown who would close if the situation comes up.
Fantasy Tip: Carson Smith may be in live for a save chance tonight if the situation presents itself against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Don't be alarmed if Rodney doesn't pitch in the ninth tonight, as the team likely is looking to get him some rest. Rodney has pitched in each of the team's last two games over the weekend.
Sun, 12 Apr 2015 15:09:00 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Hernandez ($9,300, 18.6% of cap) looks like he was taken out for precautionary reasons, but this is never good news when a team's big star has injury concerns. Keep an eye on this situation.
Sun, 12 Apr 2015 11:20:30 -0700
Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said DH/OF Nelson Cruz will "play his share of outfield," and predicted that he could play more than 35 games in the field this season. McClendon likes the idea of being able to use the DH spot to give banged-up players a break while keeping their bats in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Cruz ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) is more likely to see time in the outfield when the club is facing a right-handed starter because that would allow 2B/OF Rickie Weeks ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) to be used as a designated hitter.
Fri, 10 Apr 2015 20:53:07 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Walker ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) was a popular sleeper heading into the season, and while he has the stuff to become special, tonight's outing was a reminder that young pitchers are not always the most reliable fantasy options. Consider him a matchup play at FantasyScore for now.
Fri, 10 Apr 2015 15:34:14 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Bloomquist ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is mainly a defensive specialist and should be ignored in all daily games.
Fri, 10 Apr 2015 14:38:08 -0700
Seattle Mariners OF Rickie Weeks is starting in left field and leading off against Oakland Athletics SP Drew Pomeranz Friday, April 10. OFs Dustin Ackley and Seth Smith are both sitting the bench in the matchup against a left-hander.
Fantasy Tip: Weeks ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) provides you a nice chance to save money at other positions in the evening slate of games at FantasyScore. He will regularly play against lefties this year, and he hit seven home runs and had a .504 slugging percentage in 2014 against lefties.
Wed, 08 Apr 2015 15:50:46 -0700
Fantasy Tip: The Mariners have an abundance of outfield options, and Wednesday, Austin Jackson ($4,500, 9.0% of cap), Dustin Ackley ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) and Nelson Cruz ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) will patrol the green. Of the three, Ackley could move the needle the most in FantasyScore contests due to his low price. Make sure to check back for updates on Smith ($3,300, 6.6% of cap). He is an excellent hitter against right-handed pitching and worth targeting in favorable matchups at his price point.
