Fantasy Tip: Pence's timetable for recovery would keep him out through at least the beginning of April. The missed time could also result in a slow start when he's able to return to the diamond. Fantasy gamers in standard mixed leagues should wait until the middle rounds before selecting and stashing Pence.

Updating an ongoing story, San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (forearm) feared he had sustained a fractured left forearm, when he was hit by a pitch Thursday, March 5. The typical recovery time for a non-displaced ulnar fracture is six to eight weeks, but the Giants will wait until they review the X-rays to announce a recovery timeline.
Fantasy Tip: A mid-April return sounds like a best-case scenario. With the potential of setbacks and a rehab stint, Pence beginning his season around May 1 seems more reasonable. While his fantasy stock will obviously plummet, he could still return plenty of value as a late middle round stash candidate. Continue to check back for updates and an official timetable for Pence's recovery. The injury leaves a hole in the outfield for San Fran, and their options aren't currently worthy of attention in the majority of fantasy formats. Expect Gregor Blanco, Travis Ishikawa and Juan Perez to battle for playing time with Pence sidelined.

Fantasy Tip: Until there is an official update on the severity of the injury, it would be unwise to jump to conclusions. Still, this doesn't project favorably for Pence's fantasy stock. Continue to check back for updates, but a best-case scenario is likely an early-April return, if Pence has a broken bone in his forearm.

Fantasy Tip: The immediacy of the X-rays is mildly concerning, and there is potential this could be a serious injury for Pence. Make sure to check back for an official update. Pence has been one of the most consistent hitters in baseball, and he contributes across all five categories. Over the past three seasons, Pence has averaged 95 runs, 24 home runs, 92 RBI and 13 stolen bases with a .271 batting average. Oddly, despite his excellent production, he is usually available into the middle rounds of drafts.

Fantasy Tip: At age 33, Peavy is on the very edge of fantasy value in mixed leagues. He went 7-13 with a 3.73 ERA in 32 combined starts with the Boston Red Sox and Giants last year. A horrible start in Boston was saved with his move to the hitter-friendly confines in SF. However, his days of dominance are over, and if he's not spot on with his location, he can find himself in trouble. Peavy is mainly an NL-only commodity, and he can be useful in daily games in the right matchups.

San Francisco Giants OF Norichika Aoki will hit leadoff against the Oakland Athletics in the exhibition game Tuesday, March 3, and manager Bruce Bochy plans to experiment with Aoki as the leadoff hitter, although OF Angel Pagan is likely to start the year as the team's leadoff hitter. In the times that Aoki hits leadoff, Pagan would hit third. Pagan feels more comfortable at leadoff, but he's excited about the possibility of hitting in front of C Buster Posey, too.
Fantasy Tip: Aoki's fantasy allure comes from his stable batting average and speed on the basepaths, but the move to San Francisco isn't the most intriguing. Hitting at the top of the lineup will give him more opportunities to score runs, but he remains nothing more than a late-round stolen base source in deeper mixed leagues.

San Francisco Giants OF Angel Pagan (neck) did not hit Thursday, Feb. 26, because of a stiff neck, according to manager Bruce Bochy. However, the issue isn't believed to be serious, and it's unrelated to his back problems from last year.
Fantasy Tip: Pagan hasn't gone over 96 games in the last two seasons because of injuries. It's definitely not a good sign that he's already nicked up this early in spring, either. He's a brittle vet that doesn't inspire much confidence for owners looking for a steals option at the tail end of drafts.

Fantasy Tip: Cain struggled in 2014 but is trying to work his way back from some injuries and be ready for the start of the regular season. Owners should monitor his performance during the spring training, but he could be a consideration in the later rounds of mixed league drafts if he is healthy.

San Francisco Giants RP Sergio Romo's (shoulder, hand) shoulder is feeling better and should be fine even though his pitching hand was hit by a ball while he was running, according to manager Bruce Bochy.
Fantasy Tip: Romo could take a few days off to let things heal, but it looks like he should be fine for the regular season. He likely will start the season as a setup man but could be a closer option if Santiago Casilla struggles in the job. Owners could consider selecting Romo in one of the later rounds of mixed league drafts as a possible handcuff to Casilla.

Fantasy Tip: Casilla is a cheap saves gamble later in mixed drafts, but there's a good chance he'll be looking over his shoulder all year at Sergio Romo. In a best-case scenario, you would handcuff the two Gigantes relievers to each other.

Fantasy Tip: This will likely be Hudson's final year of his career. After posting his first losing record of his career last season, there's not much left in the tank for the 39-year-old. Bochy is likely being optimistic on Hudson's timetable. Hudson can be an innings-eater for fantasy squads, but his really only useful in NL-only leagues for now.

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Hudson (ankle), who is working his way back from surgery in early January to have bone spurs removed from his right ankle, is scheduled for his first spring mound session Wednesday, Feb. 25. Hudson is happy with his progress and said his ankle is feeling pretty good. Hudson said he's a bit behind but further along than he was last year in spring.
Fantasy Tip: A 39-year-old coming off surgery really shouldn't any fantasy baseball drafters. He also posted his first losing season last year and had an ERA of 3.57. Hudson can be an innings-eater during the year if he's healthy, but he's best left to the waiver wire in standard 12-team leagues for now.

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (elbow) threw another productive bullpen session Monday, Feb. 23, and is encouraged about his recovery from right elbow surgery. He tossed 30 pitches Monday and is throwing all of his pitches. "Letting it go," Cain said. "Today was 100%. Everything felt good. We're taking steps in the right way. The arm's feeling good and everything is going the right way. Now it's just getting the repetitions, getting on the mound a lot." C Buster Posey has also been impressed with how Cain has looked this spring.
Fantasy Tip: Cain is also recovering from an ankle surgery, and he'll be on injury watch this spring training. If he continues his optimistic road to recovery, he'll be an injury discount in the late rounds of standard 12-team mixed leagues to round out your rotation.

Fantasy Tip: This was expected to be the case all along. Casilla had a sparkling 1.70 ERA and 0.86 WHIP last year while recording 19 saves for the Gigantes last year. Sergio Romo, when healthy, is a threat to Casilla in the ninth, though, so it's best to handcuff the two if you can.
