Giants | Madison Bumgarner to start season opener

Sat, 13 Feb 2016 11:44:23 -0800

San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner will serve as the club's Opening Day stater versus the Milwaukee Brewers April 4, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Fantasy Tip: This news should come to the surprise of no one. Bumgarner went 18-9 with a 2.93 ERA in 32 starts last season, with 234 strikeouts over 218 1/3 innings, while making the All-Star team for the third consecutive year. The 26-year-old southpaw should be one of the first pitchers drafted in all fantasy formats.

Giants | Joe Panik 100% healthy

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 13:34:02 -0800

San Francisco Giants 2B Joe Panik (back) said he is 100% healthy.

Fantasy Tip: Panik's breakout in 2015 was cut short by his back injury, but his improvements in contact and plate discipline are real, although don't expect a return to a .300 average. Panik doesn't run much but has notable power that will play as a middle infield option in deep mixed leagues.

Giants | Hunter Pence unrestricted

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 11:23:47 -0800

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (oblique) resumed taking swings in the batting cage in December and is unrestricted in his activities.

Fantasy Tip: Pence's 2015 was a bust because of a broken forearm and an oblique strain. You should expect a rebound to his typical skills, though, as he shouldn't be limited at all in spring training or to start the year. Just don't count on double-digit stolen bases anymore.

Giants | Denard Span to lead off

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 11:18:30 -0800

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span will hit leadoff and play center field in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Span hit .301 with 11 steals in just 246 at-bats last season and could be a cheap source for 20 steals as a fifth outfielder.

Giants | Brandon Belt avoids arbitration

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:41:55 -0800

San Francisco Giants 1B Brandon Belt avoided arbitration Wednesday, Feb. 10, by agreeing to a one-year, $6.2 million deal.

Fantasy Tip: Belt's injury concerns -- offseason knee surgery and a concussion that ended his season -- could make him a relative bargain on draft day since he could tease 30 home runs over a full season.

Giants | San Fran looking at Juan Uribe

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 13:30:53 -0800

Free-agent 3B Juan Uribe (Mets) has had discussions about signing with the San Francisco Giants in a utility role, but Uribe's asking price has been too high.

Fantasy Tip: The 36-year-old veteran still has a bit of pop in his lumber, but his playing time will be limited wherever he lands. Uribe is strictly a late-round flier in deep single-universe leagues for bench depth.

Giants | Tim Lincecum unlikely to re-sign

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 11:03:45 -0800

Free-agent SP Tim Lincecum (Giants) is unlikely to re-sign with the San Francisco Giants with their starting rotation already full. Lincecum could, however, be considered for a bullpen role as he recovers from hip surgery. SP Chris Heston, who made 31 starts for the Giants last year, also appears headed for a bullpen role.

Fantasy Tip: Injury concerns are Lincecum's biggest hurdle heading into the 2016 season, and he'll likely sign somewhere for plenty of incentives. There's no guarantee he'll be a starter again wherever he lands, and there's plenty of fantasy risk surrounding him in NL-only leagues.

Giants | Brandon Belt files for arbitration

Sun, 17 Jan 2016 08:18:29 -0800

San Francisco Giants 1B/OF Brandon Belt has filed for salary arbitration. He is seeking a one-year deal worth $3.3 million while the team has countered with a $2.8 million offer.

Fantasy Tip: Belt hit .280 with 18 home runs and 68 RBIs in 137 games last season. He should be drafted in the middle rounds of NL-only fantasy leagues and the later rounds of mixed leagues.

Giants | Gregor Blanco to come off the bench

Fri, 08 Jan 2016 17:26:26 -0800

San Francisco Giants OF Gregor Blanco is expected to serve as the club's fourth outfielder in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: OFs Angel Pagan, Denard Span and Hunter Pence will comprise San Francisco's starting outfield, meaning Blanco will begin the year in a reserve role. However, all three players missed considerable playing time in 2015, so he could receive enough at-bats to be worthy of selecting as a bench player for NL-only fantasy leagues.

Giants | Denard Span to serve as leadoff hitter

Fri, 08 Jan 2016 17:09:44 -0800

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span is expected to serve as the club's leadoff hitter and regular center fielder, with OF Angel Pagan moving over to left field on a full-time basis.

Fantasy Tip: As a result of signing Span, the Giants are no longer expected to be in the running for other free-agent outfielders such as Yoenis Cespedes (Mets) and Justin Upton (Padres). Span should be viewed as a late-round flier for deep mixed fantasy leagues because of his ability to score runs, steal bases and hit for a high average. Pagan has had difficulty remaining healthy in recent seasons and has seen a decline in his speed and power numbers, so he shouldn't be targeted outside of NL-only and deep universal leagues.

Giants | Denard Span already at full health

Fri, 08 Jan 2016 13:38:52 -0800

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span (hip) said he has recovered from his September hip surgery and could play Friday, Jan. 8, if there was a game.

Fantasy Tip: Span played just 61 games in 2015, so having him ready to go already is encouraging for the veteran playing a full season in 2016. He can help in runs, stolen bases and batting average, but he is still likely best viewed as a late-round option in mixed leagues.

Giants | San Francisco signs Denard Span

Thu, 07 Jan 2016 14:50:11 -0800

Updating a previous report, the San Francisco Giants signed free-agent OF Denard Span (Nationals) to a three-year contract Thursday, Jan. 7. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Entering his age-32 season, Span is likely looking at the twilight of his best fantasy years, and he also was limited to just 61 games in 2015. Span has a .301 batting average over the past two seasons, and he still boasts target-worthy speed, but he isn't anything more than a late-round grab in the majority of mixed leagues.

Giants | San Francisco close to adding Denard Span

Thu, 07 Jan 2016 14:42:46 -0800

Free-agent OF Denard Span (Nationals) is nearing a deal with the San Francisco Giants, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Span projects as a low-end outfielder in the majority of leagues with much more value in cavernous mixed and NL-only formats, if he does sign with San Francisco.

Giants | Flexor strain now behind Johnny Cueto

Thu, 17 Dec 2015 12:49:36 -0800

San Francisco Giants SP Johnny Cueto's (elbow) MRI exam Wednesday, Dec. 16, revealed his flexor strain has healed, according to general manager Bobby Evans.

Fantasy Tip: A return to the National League will help Cueto return to his dominant self, especially with his elbow injuries behind him. A rough adjustment to the American League plagued his otherwise solid six-year run, and it could lead to Cueto being a nice value pick in the early middle rounds this spring. View him as a mid- to low-end No. 1 arm for your virtual rotation.
