Giants | Matt Cain shaky in return

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 15:59:18 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (elbow) made his first start of the season Thursday, July 2, against the Miami Marlins and struggled a bit, going five innings and surrendering five runs on seven hits, including two home runs, while striking out two and walking four.

Fantasy Tip: Overall, it wasn’t a good return to the mound for Cain ($4,300, 8.6% of cap), though he was pitching just fine until a troubling fifth inning when the Marlins tagged him for four of their five runs on the day. Despite the off outing, Cain is absolutely still worth a speculative add at the very least, and he still could be a solid option on FantasyScore based on the matchups, especially when he’s working from home in pitcher-friendly San Francisco. The 30-year-old amassed an impressive 55 wins over a four-year stretch from 2009-2012 and can still be useful for fantasy rotations if he remains healthy.

Giants | Tim Lincecum to DL

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 09:09:33 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (forearm) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm contusion. The move is retroactive to June 28.

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum probably won't have a rotation spot to return to, barring another injury. He can be dumped in most formats. Matt Cain ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) takes his spot, but he's a watch list guy right now.

Giants | Andrew Susac catching

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 09:04:01 -0700

San Francisco Giants C Andrew Susac is behind the plate and hitting seventh against Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez Thursday, July 2. C Buster Posey is starting at first base.

Fantasy Tip: Susac ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) is an intriguing sleeper catcher option on FantasyScore some of the time, especially since he receives semi-regular playing time with Posey moving to first often. However, he's one to avoid against former National League Rookie of the Year Fernandez, even though it's his first start in over a year due to injury.

Giants | Angel Pagan resting

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 08:33:34 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Angel Pagan is out of the lineup Thursday, July 2, with OF Gregor Blanco in his place at leadoff.

Fantasy Tip: Blanco ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) is having a nice season with a .314-1-15 clip, but he draws Jose Fernandez in his season debut. The upside isn't there, but the price and spot in the lineup is right if you need a low-priced outfield option on FantasyScore.

Giants | Santiago Casilla out a few days

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 08:23:06 -0700

San Francisco Giants RP Santiago Casilla (arm) will be given a few days off due to arm fatigue, according to manager Bruce Bochy. RPs Sergio Romo and Javier Lopez will close out games based on matchups.

Fantasy Tip: Romo is the righty, has the experience and will probably see the bulk of the opportunities with Casilla out. He's likely gone in NL-only leagues, but if you're fetching for saves in mixed leagues, grab him.

Giants | Matt Cain activated

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 07:45:23 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (elbow) was activated from the disabled list Thursday, July 2, and faces the Miami Marlins.

Fantasy Tip: The Fish are without Giancarlo Stanton, but Cain ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) isn't the same pitcher he once was. Give him a start or two before using him on FantasyScore.

Giants | Buster Posey back in there

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 07:44:53 -0700

San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey (head) is in the lineup Thursday, July 2, at first base a day after exiting from a foul ball off his catcher's mask.

Fantasy Tip: Posey ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) is 11-for-22 with a homer and nine RBI the last seven days, but he faces off against Jose Fernandez. The matchup isn't the greatest, but it is Fernandez's first start since Tommy John surgery. Posey is a solid option on FantasyScore.

Giants | Buster Posey exits game

Wed, 01 Jul 2015 19:16:27 -0700

San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey (head) took a foul ball off his mask against the Miami Marlins Wednesday, July 1, in the second inning, but didn't leave the game until the fifth inning. He was replaced by C Andrew Susac.

Fantasy Tip: Susac ($2,100, 4.2% of cap), who hit .342 in 38 at-bats last month, would serve as the team's primary catcher if Posey ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) is forced to miss an extended amount of playing time. Check back for further updates on Posey's status.

Giants | Tim Hudson could land on DL

Wed, 01 Jul 2015 16:12:38 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants SP Tim Hudson (shoulder) will go on the disabled list or seven-day personal leave list to clear space for SP Jake Peavy (back) Friday, July 3. Hudson is dealing with a serious family matter and is also dealing with some physical issues, including a sore right shoulder. "Just (scapula) stuff and crankiness," said Hudson, who also has had ankle and hip issues. "It's one of those things that happens throughout the season with most people. When you get older it gets harder to deal with sometimes."

Fantasy Tip: Either way you slice it, Hudson ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) is being bumped out of the rotation with Peavy returning. It's unclear how long he'll be away from the team, but it could be an extended timetable, and he could return in a relief role. Hudson has no business being owned in the majority of fantasy leagues now.

Giants | Tim Hudson taking leave

Wed, 01 Jul 2015 14:43:43 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Hudson will leave the team to attend a family situation, and he could land on the bereavement list.

Fantasy Tip: With Jake Peavy (back) coming off the disabled list to start Friday, Hudson is expected to lose his rotation spot and possibly move to the bullpen. A move to the bereavement list makes sense as a way for the Giants to avoid the situation in the short term. It's looking like Hudson won't have any value in deep mixed and NL-only leagues, though.

Giants | Hunter Pence won't return before break

Wed, 01 Jul 2015 14:40:03 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (wrist) will not return before the All-Star break because he needs to play in rehab games before returning, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Fantasy Tip: Pence should remained stashed in a DL slot in all leagues, and he can help immediately upon his return sometime at the end of this month. Gregor Blanco ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) is the biggest beneficiary of Pence's absence, and he'll remain a sleeper play against certain right-handed pitchers on FantasyScore. Blanco is hitting .315 (40-for-127) with a homer and 12 RBI against righties in 2015.

Giants | Joe Panik finishes June strong

Tue, 30 Jun 2015 20:05:24 -0700

San Francisco Giants 2B Joe Panik went 2-for-4 with a run during the Giants' 5-3 loss the the Miami Marlins Tuesday, June 30.

Fantasy Tip: Panik ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) failed to reach base in just two games all month, and he finished June with a .327/.389/.475 slash line. He also scored 14 runs and is up to 40 for the season. Panik has excellent contact skills and is worth targeting at FantasyScore when the Giants face a favorable pitching matchup.

Giants | Hunter Pence swinging Tuesday

Tue, 30 Jun 2015 14:53:38 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (wrist) has been making progress and will resume swinging a bat Tuesday, June 30, while using a fungo bat off a tee.

Fantasy Tip: Pence ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) still has a ways to go before returning to action. Stay patient and continue stashing him everywhere. Until then, Gregor Blanco ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) benefits the most in the San Fran outfield. He's not a bad sleeper option at a cheap price on FantasyScore against certain right-handed pitchers.

Giants | Tim Lincecum going on DL

Tue, 30 Jun 2015 14:48:20 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (elbow) will be put on the disabled list when SP Matt Cain (elbow) is activated from the DL Thursday, July 2.

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) went 3-2 and allowed 16 earned runs in 19 1/3 innings in five starts in June before being hit by a line drive in his last outing. He can be dropped in the majority of formats now that he's bumped out of the rotation. Cain ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is worth an addition in shallow mixed leagues if you have the room for a matchup play. He could pan out as a great sleeper play against the offensively-challenged Miami Marlins in his first start back Thursday, too. However, there's still plenty of risk attached, especially if he has a pitch limit.

Giants | Matt Cain, Jake Peavy returning this week

Tue, 30 Jun 2015 14:38:50 -0700

San Francisco Giants SPs Matt Cain (elbow) and Jake Peavy (back) will return from the disabled list later this week and re-enter the starting rotation. Manager Bruce Bochy confirmed that Cain will start Thursday, July 2, while Peavy will go Friday, July 3.

Fantasy Tip: The return of Cain ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) and Peavy ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) will push Tim Hudson and Tim Lincecum out of the rotation. Lincecum is headed for the DL, while Hudson is likely to pitch out of the bullpen. Cain will face the Miami Marlins Thursday, making him a risk/reward option on FantasyScore despite it being his first start back. Peavy should be avoided on FantasyScore against the Washington Nationals Friday. Both Cain and Peavy could be successfully used in shallow mixed leagues as matchup plays, with Cain having more fantasy upside. Hudson and Lincecum should be dropped in traditional formats.
