Giants | LF to be revolving door for SF

Fri, 04 Sep 2015 16:00:29 -0700

San Francisco Giants OFs Nori Aoki, Gregor Blanco, Juan Perez and Alejandro De Aza will rotate in left field based on matchups, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Fantasy Tip: This configuration will likely hold up until Hunter Pence returns from his injury. Blanco ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) has the most fantasy value, as he'll likely be in there most of the time against righties, and he has the best bat of the bunch. In the right matchups, Blanco is hard to ignore at that salary. The others will be hit or miss down the stretch.

Giants | Juan Perez starting in left field

Fri, 04 Sep 2015 14:55:23 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Juan Perez is starting in left field and batting eighth against Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa Friday, Sept. 4. OF Gregor Blanco is not in the starting lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Perez ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) would typically be a fantasy afterthought, but with the game being played at Coors Field, he shouldn't be completely ignored. If you're looking to open up some cap space to spend up elsewhere, Perez checks out as a viable source of savings.

Giants | Tim Lincecum had left hip surgery

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 18:07:15 -0700

Updating previous reports, San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (hip) underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left hip Thursday, Sept. 3, and the doctor said his right hip was fine. The medical staff will continue to monitor the right side as his rehab continues.

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) will begin the rehab process with range of motion exercises Friday, Sept. 4, and will remain in Colorado through the weekend before continuing to rehab in Arizona. According to trainer Dave Groeschner, he is expected to need five months of recovery time and should be ready to participate in spring training. The soon-to-be free agent may be worth a late-round flier in drafts for NL-only and deep mixed leagues next spring.

Giants | Tim Lincecum facing lengthy rehab

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 16:12:54 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (hip) is looking at a five-month recovery after having hip surgery Thursday, Sept. 3, according to head trainer Dave Groeschner. The procedure involved fixing a torn labrum and shaving down the bone to treat an impingement.

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has enough time to recover in time for spring training next year, but that's far from a guarantee. Hip injuries can be tricky, especially for a pitcher like Lincecum of short stature who relies on plenty of torque from his hips to generate velocity. He probably shouldn't be drafted in shallow mixed leagues in 2016, but he could be worth a late-round flier in deeper leagues if he's throwing in spring training.

Giants | Buster Posey in homer drought

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 15:42:44 -0700

San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey has not homered in his last 27 games. His next home run will be the 100th of his career.

Fantasy Tip: A trip to hitter-friendly Coors Field this weekend could be just what Posey ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) needs to get back in the home run column. He's the safest catcher on FantasyScore with the highest ceiling tonight against Rockies lefty Chris Rusin. Pay up for Posey.

Giants | Kelby Tomlinson in two-hole Thursday

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 15:40:59 -0700

San Francisco Giants 2B Kelby Tomlinson is hitting second against Colorado Rockies SP Chris Rusin Thursday, Sept. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Stacking Gigantes hitters tonight against Rusin in Colorado isn't a bad strategy, and Tomlinson ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) could look more attractive as a deep FantasyScore sleeper on a day with few games.

Giants | Gregor Blanco sitting vs. lefty

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 15:36:18 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Gregor Blanco is not in the lineup against Colorado Rockies left-handed SP Chris Rusin Thursday, Sept. 3. OF Juan Perez is starting in left field and batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Perez ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) has a juicy matchup if you're looking to catch lightning in a bottle tonight on FantasyScore. The reserve outfielder is hitting .368 but with just seven hits in 19 at-bats this season.

Giants | Tim Lincecum will have hip surgery

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 14:21:04 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (hip) will undergo season-ending hip surgery, according to general manager Bobby Evans. "The next step for him is to do everything he can and get back and get well, but it's going to take him out for the season," Evans said. "What that leads to in terms of his progression healthwise will dictate what opportunities he has with us or elsewhere."

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum has a long road ahead of him before returning to fantasy relevancy. After all, he owns a 4.68 ERA through his last 615 2/3 innings dating back to the beginning of the 2012 season. He might be best suited as a reliever going forward, too. At best, he is a late-round flier next spring and potential NL-only and cavernous mixed option.

Giants | Tim Lincecum done for the year

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 09:30:56 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (hip) has been shut down for the season, according to the Giants general manager.

Fantasy Tip: While it wasn't relayed, it's likely that Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) will have surgery on his hip in the near future to fix a degenerative condition. The surgery should allow him to be ready for spring training in 2016 barring any setbacks. Lincecum will be a late-round flier in fantasy drafts next spring, and he could be a surprise performer if he can regain his velocity. He could also be pitching for another team next year, as he'll be a free agent this winter.

Giants | Joe Panik could return Monday

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 17:24:52 -0700

San Francisco Giants 2B Joe Panik (back) is expected to play three rehab games for Class AAA Sacramento prior to being activated from the disabled list Monday, Sept. 7, before the beginning of a series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Panik's ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) return will likely signal a sharp decrease in playing time for Kelby Tomlinson ($2,000, 4.0% of cap), who is batting .313 with a home run and 13 RBIs through 26 games. Panik had been playing well prior to getting injured and should be a FantasyScore lineup consideration as soon as he returns.

Giants | Matt Cain to make rehab start Friday

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 17:11:02 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (elbow) has left the team to head to Arizona, in order to prepare for a rehab start for Class AAA Sacramento Friday, Sept. 4, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Fantasy Tip: If all goes well, Cain ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) could wind up returning from the 15-day disabled list after being sidelined for the minimum number of days. He was 1-3 with a 6.70 ERA in eight starts since the All-Star break prior to getting injured, so FantasyScore owners shouldn't rush to add him to their lineups once he returns.

Giants | Mike Leake hasn't fared well against LA

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 16:36:09 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Mike Leake is 2-3 with a 5.35 ERA in six games (five starts) in his career against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who he faces Wednesday, Sept. 2. He is 0-1 in three starts since joining the Giants in a midseason trade.

Fantasy Tip: It's unlikely that Leake ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) will be a popular pick against the Dodgers tonight in his third start since coming off the DL. He'll be at another nice pitching-friendly environment, but there's plenty of risk involved if you feel like zigging when others zag.

Giants | Gregor Blanco in two-hole

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 16:29:24 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Gregor Blanco is starting in left field and hitting second against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Fantasy Tip: Blanco ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) actually has decent numbers against left-handers (.290/.362/.371), but Kershaw is a rare breed and has been lights out in the second half. It would be wise to avoid Blanco tonight.

Giants | Brandon Crawford remains out

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 16:27:39 -0700

San Francisco Giants SS Brandon Crawford (calf) is not in the lineup for the second straight game Wednesday, Sept. 2. SS Ehire Adrianza is starting at the 6 and hitting eighth against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw.

Fantasy Tip: Avoid Adrianza ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) against last year's National League Cy Young winner on FantasyScore.

Giants | Tim Lincecum may need surgery

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 11:08:47 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (hip) will visit with a hip specialist in Colorado Wednesday, Sept. 2, to determine if he'll need to have surgery on his degenerative hip. He's already visited multiple doctors for his injury, and he's expected to make a final decision tomorrow. Lincecum doesn't have severe pain, but he's bothered by instability that has often caused him to slip on the mound during his rehab. Doctors have told him he would be ready for spring training if he undergoes surgery, and they believe his velocity decline is directly related to his hip. Lincecum wasn't progressing as he hoped after receiving multiple cortisone shots.

Fantasy Tip: Either way, Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has likely thrown his last pitch for the Giants this year, so he can be ignored everywhere. If he recovers in time for the regular season next year, he could be a flier in the late rounds of fantasy drafts, and as a free agent this winter, his best chances to make a fantasy impact in 2016 may be somewhere other than SF.
