Giants | Another stinker for Jake Peavy

Wed, 04 May 2016 16:06:34 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Jake Peavy surrendered seven runs and eight hits, including four home runs, in six innings in a loss to the Cincinnati Reds Wednesday, May 4. He struck out eight and walked one while raising his ERA to 9.00 in six starts. Peavy had been 7-0 with a 2.38 ERA in 12 career starts against the Reds. Peavy allowed three home runs in one inning in the game.

Fantasy Tip: It's clear Peavy isn't fooling anyone. The 34-year-old is nearing the end of his career and had allowed just two home runs in his previous five starts. He's allowed at least four earned runs in all but one of his starts, however. Peavy could be in danger of being ousted from San Fran's rotation if he keeps pitching like this. His ownership should be limited to NL-only universes.

Giants | Brandon Belt made mechanical adjustment

Wed, 04 May 2016 15:02:30 -0700

San Francisco Giants 1B Brandon Belt said he made a mechanical adjustment this year that lets him see the pitch longer before he has to commit, and the result has been better plate discipline. Entering the day Wednesday, May 4, he was hitting .323 with a .434 on-base percentage and .982 OPS. He has more walks (22) than strikeouts (16). "I'm back to seeing the ball, not guessing," Belt said. "The results are not very good when I guess. For a few years I was just searching for something to hold on to. I think I've found it."

Fantasy Tip: The improved plate discipline and approach could very well lead to a breakout season for Belt. He's often teased with 30-homer power but hasn't been able to put it all together. With fewer K's and more consistent hard contact, Belt looks like he's headed toward being a top-10 fantasy first baseman.

Giants | Three Giants sitting out

Wed, 04 May 2016 07:43:59 -0700

San Francisco Giants 3B Matt Duffy, OF Angel Pagan (hamstring) and 2B Joe Panik (groin) are out of the lineup Wednesday, May 4. OF Gregor Blanco is hitting second, 3B Conor Gillaspie is hitting sixth and 2B Kelby Tomlinson hits eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Blanco is hitting .333 and is the only one of the trio that has some upside against Dan Straily today.

Giants | Buster Posey sitting out

Wed, 04 May 2016 07:43:26 -0700

San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey is out of the lineup Wednesday, May 4, with C Trevor Brown hitting eighth. OF Hunter Pence moved up to hit third.

Fantasy Tip: Brown has a .258-3-8 line on the season and could be a low-end streamer against Dan Straily. Pence has a .290-5-23 line and has added luster in the three-hole. He's an upper-middle option in DFS today.

Giants | Jeff Samardzija has best outing as Giant

Tue, 03 May 2016 19:47:15 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Jeff Samardzija churned out his best start with his new team Tuesday, May 3, against the Cincinnati Reds. He worked eight terrific innings, allowing just one run on three hits, one being a fifth-inning solo homer. He also registered nine strikeouts and two walks.

Fantasy Tip: Other than a couple of uneventful outings, Samardzija has actually been real good thus far in his first year with the Giants, as this is the third time in six tries he's pitched into the eighth inning or beyond. With today's performance, he now also carries a very solid 3.32 ERA. It seems Samardzija has put behind his disappointing 2015, which is great news for his owners.

Giants | Joe Panik gets extra work in

Tue, 03 May 2016 17:10:09 -0700

San Francisco Giants 2B Joe Panik (groin) added treadmill jogging and agility drills to his activities. He might be available to pinch hit Tuesday, May 3.

Fantasy Tip: Panik has been out the past few games, but it looks like he'll be back very soon, and actually might return to the lineup on Wednesday. In the meantime, Kelby Tomlinson is taking his place at second base, though he's not a recommended option for daily formats with his low ceiling.

Giants | Sergio Romo throws on flat ground

Tue, 03 May 2016 15:44:01 -0700

San Francisco Giants RP Sergio Romo (elbow) threw off flat ground from 90 feet Tuesday, May 3.

Fantasy Tip: The Gigantes are being cautious with the 33-year-old, but when he's ready to return he should slot back in as the eighth-inning setup man to Santiago Casilla. Casilla has had his problems in the ninth inning and could be on a short leash, so stash Romo now if he's available in deeper leagues if you're speculating on saves.

Giants | Angel Pagan out again

Tue, 03 May 2016 13:14:49 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Angel Pagan (hamstring) is out of the lineup again Tuesday, May 3, against the Cincinnati Reds. OF Gregor Blanco is batting eighth against Reds SP John Lamb.

Fantasy Tip: Pagan should miss a couple more games, so stash him on your bench and activate him as you see fit when Pagan is healthy. For now, Blanco shouldn't carry too much fantasy value, and there is a chance newly-promoted OF Mac Williamson could even see some time.

Giants | Joe Panik still out Tuesday

Tue, 03 May 2016 13:06:26 -0700

San Francisco Giants 2B Joe Panik (groin) is out of the lineup Tuesday, May 3, against the Cincinnati Reds. 2B Kelby Tomlinson is hitting seventh against Reds SP John Lamb.

Fantasy Tip: Panik is getting closer to returning, but the team is erring on the side of caution with his injury. Keep him sidelined until he has shown signs of being fully recovered.

Giants | Brandon Crawford saves the day

Mon, 02 May 2016 23:33:45 -0700

San Francisco Giants SS Brandon Crawford went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run and four RBIs Monday, May 2, against the Cincinnati Reds. His three-run shot in the seventh inning helped the team come back and win.

Fantasy Tip: Crawford had managed just six RBIs to date, and he is hitting .253 overall. Fantasy owners expected a little more out of Crawford this season. However, this type of game might just be something to jump-start him heading into May.

Giants | Brandon Belt loves Cincinnati pitching

Mon, 02 May 2016 23:29:12 -0700

San Francisco Giants 1B Brandon Belt is 17-for-34 (.500) with three homers, nine extra-base hits and 11 RBIs in his past eight games against the Cincinnati Reds.

Fantasy Tip: Belt finished 3-for-4 Monday with a triple, two runs scored, a walk and an RBI. He apparently loves facing Cincinnati's pitching and is a must-start for the remainder of the series across all formats and DFS.

Giants | Johnny Cueto roughed up in Cincy

Mon, 02 May 2016 23:27:46 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Johnny Cueto allowed six earned runs, seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision against the Cincinnati Reds, his former team, Monday, May 2. It was his first time back in Cincinnati since he was traded from the team last summer. He needed 46 pitches to make it through the third inning, his most pitches in a single inning since June 6, 2009.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto might have been more amped up than usual, and sometimes that can end up with bad results. He might have simply had an off night, too. Either way, he remains a tremendous fantasy option and you can chalk this up as just one poor outing.

Giants | Angel Pagan to avoid DL

Mon, 02 May 2016 14:47:00 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants OF Angel Pagan (hamstring) was diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain of his left hamstring, and he'll miss a minimum of four to five days. Pagan will avoid the disabled list for now, and OFs Gregor Blanco and Mac Williamson will platoon in left field in the meantime.

Fantasy Tip: Pagan has been hitting very well out of the ninth spot and can help your team batting average in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues. Hang onto him there if he serves that need. Blanco and Williamson are nothing more than daily sleepers in the right matchup until Pagan returns.

Giants | Joe Panik getting closer

Mon, 02 May 2016 14:45:08 -0700

San Francisco Giants 2B Joe Panik (groin) played catch Monday, May 2, and he's also going to try taking grounders that are hit directly at him, as well as hitting off a tee. He's still considered "questionable/doubtful" through Wednesday, May 4.

Fantasy Tip: Panik was out to a nice start this year before landing on the sidelines, so owners shouldn't lose track of him upon his return, which looks like it will be sooner than later. With him out of the lineup, Kelby Tomlinson benefits the most, but isn't really an inspiring option to lean on in any formats.

Giants | Angel Pagan out three days?

Mon, 02 May 2016 10:39:47 -0700

The San Francisco Giants are hoping that OF Angel Pagan (hamstring) will miss only three days after straining his hamstring Sunday, May 1. OF Mac Williamson was called up from Class AAA Sacramento to give the Giants more outfield depth.

Fantasy Tip: Pagan is off to a nice start to the year hitting ninth behind the pitcher, as he's hitting .315 (29-for-92) with two home runs and 13 RBI. In deeper mixed and NL-only leagues he provides nice batting average security and outfield depth, but he doesn't help all that much in the counting stats. While he's out this week, expect Gregor Blanco to get a short-term playing time boost in left field.
