Henry Schulman, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports San Francisco Giants RP Sergio Romo did not participate in winter ball this season. Romo played winter ball in Mexico in 2008, but he sprained his pitching elbow in his first Cactus League game and missed the first two months of the regular season. Romo believes he was overused in Mexico, which led to him getting hurt. General manager Brian Sabean said, "One of the fears with someone like him stature-wise is you definitely don't want to be in a position to overwork him. Sometimes you have to work him in stretches as hard as the closer, and I don't know physically that he's cut out to do that."

Schierholtz is attempting to replace OF Randy Winn, who signed with the New York Yankees this offseason. Winn was able to make some tougher defensive plays at the position look routine. General manager Brian Sabean said, "The only guy who has a chance to do that against the standard of Randy Winn is Schierholtz." Sabean added that other players would be given an opportunity at the position.

It is expected to be more than $90 million but less than $100 million, after hovering in the low- to mid-80s last year. "Payroll has crept up a bit, but I think it's manageable for us," Neukom said.
