Padres | Yonder Alonso could bat second

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 17:27:24 -0700

San Diego Padres 1B Yonder Alonso hit second in the lineup Thursday, March 26, and Friday, March 27, going 5-for-5 with a walk, and manager Bud Black said he could bat Alonso in the No. 2 spot against right-handed pitching this season.

Fantasy Tip: Alonso has been much better against right-handed pitching throughout his career, and if he does hit second, he would be batting ahead of Matt Kemp and Justin Upton. Alonso ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) could make a decent matchup play at FantasyScore this season.

Padres | Derek Norris looking to find groove

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:18:44 -0700

San Diego Padres C Derek Norris hit his first home run of the spring Wednesday, March 25, and said, "It's been a lot better the last few days," Thursday, March 26. He went 3-for-32 with 13 strikeouts before the home run, and is looking to improve his production while juggling his duties controlling a new pitching staff. "That could play a little into it for the slower start," Norris said. "My (main) priority is getting to know these guys. Everyone would love to go 4-for-4 every day, but in my case, controlling the pitching staff and getting to know these guys is priority No. 1. Hopefully we can mesh the offense and defense."

Fantasy Tip: Norris ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is a suitable No. 2 backstop in two-catcher formats or low-end option in deep mixed leagues. There is power upside, and at 26, there is still room for growth as Norris enters his offensive prime. However, Norris is a career .208 hitter against right-handed pitching and his new ballpark is on the pitcher-friendly extreme of the spectrum. He makes an excellent FantasyScore play against left-handed pitchers, though, with a career .292/.374/.486 slash line.

Padres | Will Middlebrooks third base front-runner

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 12:57:42 -0700

San Diego Padres 3B Will Middlebrooks is the favorite to open the season as the starting third baseman. He has not played another position, while 3B Yangervis Solarte has played various infield positions during spring training. The Padres have yet to declare their everyday third basemen, though.

Fantasy Tip: Middlebrooks ($2,900, 5.8%) fell off the map last season, but at 26, he checks in as a post-hype candidate with power upside worth a late-round flier in deep leagues. His home ballpark will lend no favors, and he is likely only an early-season slump away from losing his starting job. He is having a nice spring, though, with eight runs, two doubles, two home runs and seven RBI with a .333/.350/.538 slash line. So there is upside. With Solarte's ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) playing time uncertain, it is difficult to roster him in the majority of formats. However, his positional eligibility could prove to be beneficial in deep leagues if he receives enough at-bats. At this pont, neither player projects as anything more than a low-priced flier in FantasyScore contests.

Padres | Brandon Morrow pushed back

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 09:53:04 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Brandon Morrow (finger) will have his start Thursday, March 26, pushed back due to a blister.

Fantasy Tip: Morrow ($3,000, 6.0% of your cap) is a low-end flyer with some promise in PETCO Park on FantasyScore.

Padres | Jedd Gyorko continues to struggle

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 13:16:41 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Jedd Gyorko is hitting just .188 with 16 strikeouts in 32 at-bats heading into the spring game Monday, March 23, and a National League scout recently said that Gyorko's front hip is coming up early in his setup at the plate, causing his swing to be long and slow. Gyorko is putting extra time in the cages in spring training in order to work on his mechanical struggles. He has been trying to work on keeping his hips closed and aligned with hitting coach Mark Kotsay. Gyorko is convinced that all his hard work this spring will pay off eventually.

Fantasy Tip: Gyorko's injury-marred 2014 season won't endear him to any fantasy baseball owners this year. Despite his offensive struggles and low batting average, it's hard to argue his value as a late-round sleeper in mixed leagues for his power, even if Petco Park remains more of a pitcher's park.

Padres | Josh Johnson tosses bullpen session

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 13:12:47 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Josh Johnson (elbow) threw 20 fastballs at 50% during a bullpen session Monday, March 23. It was his first bullpen session since he underwent Tommy John surgery last April.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson hardly tips the fantasy scales at this point and is best viewed as a potential stash candidate in deep NL-only leagues. At 31, he is a far removed from the upside he flashed from 2009-2012, too. He remains a player to watch, though, and could have some impact later this season, especially in FantasyScore contests.

Padres | Carlos Quentin playing first base

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 11:49:52 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Carlos Quentin played six innings at first base during a Cactus League game against the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday, March 21. It was his third appearance at the position in a game this spring. Quentin has been practicing at first for the last few weeks in an attempt to increase his versatility.

Fantasy Tip: With Justin Upton, Matt Kemp and Wil Myers penciled in as San Diego's starting outfielders, it will be difficult for Quentin to find playing time this season, barring an injury or trade. He should not be on your draft radar.

Padres | Odrisamer Despaigne still in mix

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 05:23:42 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Odrisamer Despaigne is still battling for SP Brandon Morrow for the fifth spot in the starting rotation, according to manager Bud Black. Through 12 innings pitched this spring, Despaigne has a 2.25 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and seven strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Despaigne will turn 28 before the season begins, and remains an option for the late rounds in deep mixed and NL-only formats, if he wins the rotation spot. FantasyScore players will also want to note his impressive home statistics, Despaigne posted a 1.83 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 39 strikeouts through 54 innings at the pitcher-friendly Petco Park. Even if Despaigne doesn't win the job this spring, expect him to see starts at some point this season with a number of injury risks ahead of him on the depth chart.

Padres | Brandon Morrow still battling fifth spot

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 05:12:56 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Brandon Morrow is still battling with SP Odrisamer Despaigne for the fifth spot in the starting rotation, according to manager Bud Black. Through 12 2/3 innings pitched this spring, Morrow has a 4.26 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and eight strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Morrow has tossed just 87 2/3 innings over the past two seasons, and other than a dominant stretch in 2012, he can be typecast as a high-volume strikeout artist with poor ratios. Morrow is best left to the final rounds as a late-round flier in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues, if he wins the rotation job. There is upside, but the injury history is concerning.

Padres | Will Middlebrooks squaring it up

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 14:36:50 -0700

San Diego Padres 3B Will Middlebrooks has hit the ball hard all spring and has shown a propensity to avoid merely pulling the ball.

Fantasy Tip: Middlebrooks is hitting .333-2-5 in 30 spring at-bats with the Friars. At $2,900, or 5.8% of your cap, he's a good speculative flyer on FantasyScore in good matchups.

Padres | SD favorites for Hector Olivera

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 22:53:57 -0700

Cuban free-agent INF Hector Olivera and the San Diego Padres might be closing in on a deal. According to sources, the Padres are positioning themselves as a favorite to land the Cuban infielder. The Padres are considering an offer upwards of $50 million, according to sources. The Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland Athletics are also in the mix, although the latter two are balking at the potential price tag.

Teams are balking due to past health issues, too, as he had a blood clot in his non-throwing left arm, and significant questions exist about the health of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm.

Fantasy Tip: The Padres could use Olivera for some much needed pop, as Jedd Gyorko and Will Middlebrooks really struggled offensively in 2014. It remains to be seen what Olivera’s fantasy outlook will be until he signs with someone.

Padres | Andrew Cashner concerned about mother

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 12:20:41 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner is concerned about his mother, Jane, who was diagnosed with leukemia in September and recently had a knee amputation. He plans to fly to Houston, where Jane is hospitalized, on Wednesday, March 11.

Fantasy Tip: The chances are he won't miss much spring time, and his rotation spot is already finalized. Cashner rates as a mid-round pitcher in most NL and mixed leagues, just be aware if his mother takes a turn for the worse that he might take some time off.

Padres | Tim Federowicz tears meniscus

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 20:46:34 -0700

San Diego Padres C Tim Federowicz (knee) injured his knee Monday, March 8. He had an MRI which revealed a lateral meniscus tear. He is likely to require arthroscopic surgery, and his timeline is uncertain.

Fantasy Tip: If Federowicz isn't ready for the start of the regular season, Wil Nieves is likely to serve as the backup to Derek Norris.

Padres | Andrew Cashner is healthy

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 20:45:46 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner is not dealing with any kind of health issue, manager Bud Black said Monday, March 9. Black said the pitcher was dealing with a personal matter in Texas.

Fantasy Tip: It's unfortunate he has a personal matter which cut his outing short, but fantasy owners are glad that the pitcher isn't dealing with any type of injury.

Padres | Brandon Morrow has solid outing

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 18:14:52 -0800

San Diego Padres SP Brandon Morrow allowed two hits over two scoreless innings in Cactus League action Friday, March 6, against the Chicago White Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Morrow is competing with Odrisamer Despaigne for the final rotation job in San Diego. If he is able to secure that final spot he would be a solid play in NL-only fantasy formats and deeper mixed play.
