Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer (chest) missed the game Monday, April 20, against the Chicago Cubs due to a bruised chest. He was injured by a hit by pitch Sunday, April 19. Mercer might be ready to return Tuesday, April 21.
Fantasy Tip: Mercer is the better of the two Pittsburgh shortstops from an offensive perspective, and worth a look at just $2,000 (or 4.0% of cap) when he is healthy.

Fantasy Tip: Taillon was one of the top pitching prospects in baseball before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He's worth monitoring in mixed leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Cole ($7,300, 14.6% of cap) has become a feared pitcher thanks to some strong performances for the Pirates. Daily leagues that count strikeouts will reward Cole for solid efforts, and you should start Cole in your leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) starting the previous four games, so he is receiving a day off. Stewart ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) recently came off the disabled list and probably should be avoided for now.

Fantasy Tip: The lineup promotion is a nice fantasy boost for Cervelli ($2,000, 4.0% of cap). Cervelli is 7-for-23 to start the season, and at his cap hit, he makes a nice FantasyScore target Friday. It is unlikely Cervelli sticks in the two hole, though, as the order shuffle is likely because of Neil Walker's day off.

Fantasy Tip: While his cap hit is a contest low, Rodriguez hardly moves the needle against right-handed pitchers. He has a .226/.297/.349 slash line against righties for his career, and FantasyScore players should aim higher Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Morton has a while until he is able to return to the bigs, and itís uncertain if there will be a spot in the rotation for him or if he will work out of the bullpen. FantasyScore owners need not pay him any mind until he can officially return and prove his health.

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon has averaged 88.7 mph on his fastball through three innings thus far. His average fastball was 91.6 mph last season. Manager Clint Hurdle said he's not worried, but the situation will be monitored.
Fantasy Tip: Melancon has only had one rough outing in which he allowed three runs and four hits in one inning. He still has three strikeouts in as many innings. There isn't a lot of cause for concern unless the velocity dip lingers.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Starling Marte is not in the starting lineup against Detroit Tigers SP Shane Greene Tuesday, April 14. OF Corey Hart is starting in right field and hitting fifth in the batting order.
Fantasy Tip: Hart ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) had a pinch-hit home run in Monday's win, so he's entering with a little momentum. However, he's more of a low-end outfield option at FantasyScore against Greene and the Tigers.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett is 14-12 with a 2.76 ERA in 35 career starts at PNC Park. He will face the Detroit Tigers Tuesday, April 14 after going 5 1/3 innings and recording a no-decision against the Cincinnati Reds last Thursday.
Fantasy Tip: While Burnett ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) is much better in the pitcher-friendly confines of PNC Park, he makes for a rather risky FantasyScore pitching option Tuesday against the hot-hitting Tigers.

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is making the move across the diamond from third base to first base this year, and scouts who watched him in spring training said he looked much more comfortable at first base and thought he'd benefit offensively from the move. Alvarez hit just .231 with 18 home runs and a .405 slugging percentage in 2014. The Pirates can choose to start OF Corey Hart at first base against tough left-handed pitchers, and 2B Sean Rodriguez has been a defensive replacement for Alvarez at first four times in the opening week. "He's given a 100% effort to be a really good first baseman -- not just stand at the position between at-bats," general manager Neal Huntington said.
Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) is off to a fine start in 2015, with seven hits in his first 23 at-bats (.304) and three home runs. You'll only want to play him at FantasyScore against right-handed pitchers, though, as he hit just .175 with two of his 18 dingers against southpaws last year. He's an attractive play Tuesday against Tigers starter Shane Greene.

Fantasy Tip: It's a good sign that Cutch is back in there again after missing Saturday's game with a knee issue. He went deep Sunday, and at $6,200 (12.4% of your cap), he's an elite OF option on FantasyScore.
Sun, 12 Apr 2015 09:24:42 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Sanchez ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has not gotten a hit in his four plate appearances this season. Owners on FantasyScore should be able to find better options to use for their lineups.
Sun, 12 Apr 2015 09:15:32 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Kang ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) will receive starts at shortstop and third base during the season but is not an everyday player at this point. Owners on FantasyScore probably will be able to find better options to use.
Sun, 12 Apr 2015 09:10:31 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Harrison ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is receiving a day off after struggling in the last few games. Harrison should be back for the next game but may not be a great option on FantasyScore until he heats up at the plate.
