Pittsburgh Pirates news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Kang ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) is seeing more playing time as the Pirates look to jump start their offense, and Mercer looks like the loser right now. It could continue if Kang proves productive. He has enticing power for a shortstop and makes for an attractive under-the-radar option at FantasyScore today.

Fantasy Tip: Harrison ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) hasn't been able to put it together this year after a breakout in 2015. He's hitting just .188 (18-for-96) with two home runs and six RBI. His owners are hoping a drop in the order can jump start him, but you'll probably want to stay away from him until that happens. Walker ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) is an intriguing player for FantasyScore rosters today in the two-hole, and he's hitting .262 (11-for-42) with a home run and 12 RBI in his career against Leake. He has value play written all over him.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole was named the National League Pitcher of the Month for April, going 4-0 with a 1.76 ERA. He is the first Pirates pitcher since Randy Tomlin (June 1992) to win the award.
Fantasy Tip: Cole is 8-0 with a 2.40 ERA over his past 10 starts dating back to last season. He is fairly expensive at $8,700 (or 17.4% of cap) in FantasyScore, but he has been extremely consistent and is worth the money.

Fantasy Tip: Morton's rehab after hip surgery is progressing nicely. However, his exact timetable is uncertain, and when he returns it is unclear if he'll start or work in long relief.

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Josh Harrison was held out of the lineup Tuesday, May 5, against the Cincinnati Reds. Harrison is hitless over his past 10 at-bats, and he has one hit over his past 23 at-bats.
Fantasy Tip: Harrison was a breakout player last season, but so far this season he has struggled to earn his $3,900 (or 7.8% of cap) FantasyScore salary most nights.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen (knee) is dealing with a sore left knee, although manager Clint Hurdle said Tuesday, May 5, that it is not "a concerning area right now." McCutchen is hitting just .193 and he has yet to steal a base this season.
Fantasy Tip: Hurdle might simply be protecting his player and playing possum with the opposition, as admitting an injury could help in their defensive plan against Cutch. FantasyScore players have certainly not been getting a good return on their $5,100 (or 10.2% of cap) investment so far this season.

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) doesn't tip the scales much at FantasyScore, but his low value will receive a bit of a boost hitting atop the order. He's also facing a rookie that was roughed up in his first major league start last week.
Tue, 05 May 2015 12:46:55 -0700
Fantasy Tip: It appears Harrison ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is just having an off night and nothing else is going on. Kang ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) is getting better at the plate and may be worth the lower cost, but see if you can find other alternatives with proven power first.

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and four walks in a 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday, May 3, and his 16 career home runs against St. Louis are his second most against any opponent.
Fantasy Tip: In addition to the homers, Alvarez's ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) 51 RBIs against the Cardinals are his most against any team. Alvarez has a ton of power, but he also has a poor batting average and strikes out a bunch. He is a boom-or-bust option at FantasyScore, but if you are going to roll the dice on him, it makes the most sense to do so when he is playing the Cardinals.
Sun, 03 May 2015 11:08:23 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Francisco Cervelli ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) is receiving the day off after catching last night's game. Stewart ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is an intriguing option for FantasyScore owners who typically punt the catcher position.
Sun, 03 May 2015 11:07:56 -0700
Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore owners should be able to find better options at the hot corner than Kang ($2,400, 4.8% of cap), who is starting because INF Josh Harrison ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is playing second base.
Sat, 02 May 2015 13:49:04 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Morton ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) will meet with the Pirates staff this week to possibly throw a bullpen session. He's not quite ready yet, but monitor Morton's progress and see what transpires in the next couple weeks.
Fri, 01 May 2015 14:45:11 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Josh Harrison ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) had been leading off, but Polanco ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) might be better suited for the gig. Polanco is 15-for-44 (.341 average) with 12 runs and five stolen bases over his last 12 games, after all. Polanco's stolen base and runs scored potential receives a boost leading off, but his RBI takes a minor hit. Overall, consider it a positive for Polanco.

Fantasy Tip: Cole ($8,100, 16.2% of cap) appears to be emerging as a high-end arm in the real and fake game. He now has 286 innings at the majors, and the arrow is pointing straight up for the 24-year-old righty and 2011 first overall selection. FantasyScore players will want to consider Cole whenever he takes the hill, and especially in favorable matchups.
Wed, 29 Apr 2015 13:21:21 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Cervelli ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) has started seven of the last eight games, so he is likely receiving a day off. Stewart ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has only gone 3-for-14 at the plate and is not a great option on FantasyScore.
