Pittsburgh Pirates news, rumors and injuries

Pittsburgh Pirates SP J.A. Happ pitched seven scoreless innings against the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, Sept. 4, to pick up his eight win of the season. He struck out eight batters during the game and did not walk a batter. Happ has won four of his six starts with the Pirates and has a 1.57 ERA in that span.
Fantasy Tip: Happ ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) has allowed two earned runs over his last five starts and has at least six strikeouts in three of those games. He is scheduled to face the Cincinnati Reds in his next start and could be a solid option on FantasyScore during his hot streak.

Fantasy Tip: The veteran Ramirez ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) projects to receive a few games off down the stretch. He has struggled to re-accustom himself to Pittsburgh and sports an underwhelming .697 OPS over 33 games. FantasyScore players shouldn't view Mercer ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) as anything more than a desperation source of cap relief against Martinez ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Walker ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) in all fantasy formats Friday. He has hit a bit of a funk of late going 7-for-34 with just one run and five RBI over his past 12 games. Harrison ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) is struggling since returning from the disabled list Friday, Aug. 21, and facing Martinez ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) makes Harrison a low-end option at FantasyScore Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Burnett ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) is targeting a return during the mid-September series against the Chicago Cubs, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 15. He will be a risky option in all fantasy formats for his first game back, but could have a solid start or two over the final weeks to help your seasonal teams. You'll want to continue checking back for updates, and Burnett is worth stashing in all seasonal leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Mercer ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) has lost his every-day role to Jung Ho Kang ($4,500, 9.0% of cap), but he can make a useful source of cap relief at FantasyScore when he draws the start against a southpaw.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like just the normal bumps and bruises for Cutch ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) late in a long and grinding season. Until we tell you otherwise, you shouldn't treat McCutchen any differently in any fantasy format. He's not in the starting lineup tonight, though, so make sure you sit him out.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano is scheduled to start Thursday, Sept. 3, against the Milwaukee Brewers. He is 8-2 with a 2.89 ERA in 17 starts since allowing a season-high seven runs May 19. He is 6-5 with a 4.06 ERA in 14 career appearances against the Brewers.
Fantasy Tip: The way Liriano ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has been going he is a must-start FantasyScore play, even though the Brewers have knocked off the Pirates in five straight games.

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (leg) took a foul top off of his lower right leg in the second inning Wednesday, Sept. 2, against the Milwaukee Brewers. He spent a couple of minutes sitting near home plate, but was able to gather himself and finish the game.
Fantasy Tip: Cervelli ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) finished the game hitless in four at-bats. It might be a good idea for FantasyScore players to shy away from him, as he could very well sit in the next game if he develops a bruise or swelling.

Fantasy Tip: This is the second consecutive game Harrison ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) has sat out, so there is potential he stands to be the odd-man out of the infield shuffle. Still, it is unlikely he can't help in deep mixed leagues with the at-bats he receives.

Fantasy Tip: The Pirates have exceptional depth, so a would-be regular has to sit out nightly, and Harrison ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) is the guy Tuesday. He projects to continue to receive semi-regular at-bats going forward and is worth owning in the majority of seasonal formats. He is just 5-for-21 without an extra-base hit since returning from the disabled list Monday, Aug. 21.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett (elbow) threw approximately 70 pitches during a bullpen session Sunday, Aug. 30, and reportedly felt great. He is hoping to return to action during a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs in mid-September.
Fantasy Tip: Burnett ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) was 8-5 with a 3.06 ERA in 21 starts prior to landing on the disabled list. Owners in NL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues should continue to stash him, if they can afford the roster space.

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jung Ho Kang is not in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa Sunday, Aug. 30. SS Jordy Mercer will start at second base and is batting seventh in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Kang ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) likely will return to the lineup in the near future. Mercer ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) has gone 4-for-15 since returning from the disabled list, but owners on FantasyScore may be able to find better options.

Pittsburgh Pirates 2B Neil Walker is not in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa Sunday, Aug. 30. 2B Josh Harrison will start at second base and is batting seventh in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Walker ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) is receiving a day off because he struggles against left-handed pitchers. Harrison ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) has five hits and one RBI in his last five games and could be a starting option on FantasyScore.
Sun, 30 Aug 2015 08:22:36 -0700
Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa Sunday, Aug. 30. 1B Michael Morse will start at first base and is batting sixth in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) usually sits against left-handed pitchers, so he is receiving a day off. Morse ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is hitting .323 in limited playing time this month but has not recorded an RBI since July 21, so owners may want to look at other options.
Sat, 29 Aug 2015 13:08:25 -0700
Pittsburgh Pirates OF Starling Marte is not in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies SP Chris Rusin Saturday, Aug. 29. 2B Josh Harrison will start in left field and is batting second in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Marte ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) likely is receiving a day off and should return to the lineup soon. Harrison ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) has gone 3-for-14 since he has come off the disabled list and may not be the best option at this point.
