Philadelphia Phillies news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Hamels had been struggling this spring, but he shut down a powerful Toronto lineup Thursday. Despite a 9-9 record last year, he finished last season with an impressive 2.46 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. His win total may be depressed a bit if he stays in Philadelphia, but his ratios and strikeout totals should make him a solid No. 2 starter on fantasy rosters.

Fantasy Tip: Crawford is arguably the team's top prospect, but the 20-year-old is a ways away from the majors. He hit .275-8-29 with 10 steals in 236 at-bats at High-A Clearwater last season.

Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley is rumored to be "easily attainable" in a trade if a team is willing to take on his contract. However, money and defensive concerns are two obstacles that could prevent a deal from happening, along with his ability to block a deal to any team, as a result of having 10-and-5 rights.
Fantasy Tip: The 36-year-old Utley remains a serviceable second baseman who will be available in the later middle rounds of universal fantasy baseball leagues, although his best days are behind him. He has also had difficulty remaining healthy in recent years, although he played in 155 games last season - the most games he has played in any year since 2009.

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Phillies OF Domonic Brown (Achilles') had an MRI on his left Achilles' Friday, March 20. The test did not show any tears in his left Achilles', but he does have moderate tendinitis. It might be up to a week before he plays in a game again.
Fantasy Tip: The good news is that the injury does not sound like something which will cost him regular season time or a stint on the 15-day disabled list to start.

Fantasy Tip: Franco is a player to keep on your watch list, and he could be up in the first couple of months. Cody Asche ($3,300; 6.6% of your cap) will post up at third base and is a low-end option on FantasyScore.

Philadelphia Phillies OF Domonic Brown (Achilles') left the game Thursday, March 19, and has dealt with soreness in his left Achilles' for the past two weeks. He'll be examined by the team doctor Friday, March 20, but the initial diagnosis is tendonitis.
Fantasy Tip: Brown ($3,500; 7.0% of your cap) has massively disappointed after a big first half in 2013. He's a low-end outfielder to round out your roster on FantasyScore.

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco entered Thursday, March 19, with just six singles in 29 at-bats (.207 average). Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg stated Franco needs to make some adjustments and looks like he's "over-swinging."
Fantasy Tip: Franco appears ticketed for a return trip to Triple-A. He makes contact at a high rate for a power-hitting prospect, so a fast start could result in an early-season promotion. Franco is a late-round sleeper in deep mixed leagues and a stash candidate in NL-only formats.

Fantasy Tip: Howard reported to camp lean and appears to be moving better than he has in recent years. He's still worth eyeing for your CI spot in traditional leagues.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) will once again try to rehab and avoid surgery, the team announced Monday, March 16. Lee has been shut down from throwing and has been placed on the 60-day disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: At age 36, it's hard to imagine Lee pitching through his condition and avoiding Tommy John surgery, which would likely end his career. His condition makes him one of the riskiest fantasy baseball players in 2015. Avoiding him like the plague in drafts is probably the smartest strategy.

Fantasy Tip: Harang tossed 25 quality starts through his 33 starts and returned 12 wins, 161 strikeouts and a 3.57 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP over 204 1/3 innings last season. While they're respectable numbers, banking on Harang as anything more than a low-end spot starter in mixed leagues is ill-advised. Even in NL-only formats, Harang has minimal fantasy value.

Fantasy Tip: Utley offers modest five-category production in the late middle rounds of drafts. However, injuries and age are linger concerns, as he averaged just 400 over the four seasons prior to 2010-2013. His 589 at-bats last year were the most he has had in a season since 2008, and manager Ryne Sandberg has already discussed resting Utley more frequently to keep him healthy this year. As long as he stays on the field, he is a reliable low-end starter at the keystone position.

Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley (ankle, knees) could play in his first Grapefruit League game Friday, March 13, according to manage Ryne Sandberg. Sandberg noted Utley would serve as the designated hitter. Utley has not played in a game this spring because of a sprained right ankle, which he injured in January when he stepped on a baseball.
Fantasy Tip: Utley's 589 at-bats last year were the most he has had in a season since 2008. He returned a nice line, too, with 74 runs, 11 home runs, 78 RBI, 10 stolen bases, and he slashed .270/.339/.407. The issue is how many at-bats he'll receive this season, though, as he averaged just 400 over the four seasons prior to last year. Still, his modest five-category production maintains value in the late middle rounds.

Fantasy Tip: If the pain doesn't subside soon, Lee's 2015 season, and possibly his career, could be in real jeopardy. The news that Lee is dealing with a torn ligament in his left elbow is troubling news for those in fantasy baseball drafts this week. The safest route would be to avoid Lee at all costs in the early rounds. He might be worth a late-round pick as a stash option if he can somehow pitch through the injury this year, but it seems unlikely for a pitcher of his age.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels doesn't appear to be any closer to being dealt in light of SP Cliff Lee's injury news. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro doesn't believe there is a lesson to be learned from Lee's injury. "Nope," Amaro told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark, quite succinctly. "Why would it change? No reason to change it."
Fantasy Tip: Hamels remains an SP2 in fantasy leagues, but if he's dealt to a club that can provide him more run support, he could become a fringe SP1.

Fantasy Tip: Lee will attempt to pitch through the flexor tendon tear to start the regular season, but it looks like the surgical route may be inevitable. Lee has said recently that surgery could force him to retire, as well. In any event, Lee is now extremely risky in the early rounds of drafts as a top-end starter. It may be in your best interests to avoid him entirely.
