Oakland Athletics C Stephen Vogt, 1B Yonder Alonso and OF Chris Coghlan are out of the starting lineup against Detroit Tigers SP Matt Boyd Saturday, May 28. 1B Billy Butler will bat sixth and play first base, C Josh Phegley will start behind the plate and bat seventh and OF Jake Smolinski will bat ninth and patrol right field.
Fantasy Tip: Butler, Phegley and Smolinski are all batting under .200 this month and should be viewed as nothing more than desperation sources of cap relief in daily fantasy games.

Fantasy Tip: Gray was placed on the disabled list earlier in the week but appears to be making good progress in his recovery. He could make at least one rehab start but should return in the near future. Gray should be a starting candidate once he is activated from the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Phegley doesn't receive enough at-bats to be anything more than a low-end option in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only formats. Dating back to the beginning of last season, Phegley does own a respectable .250/.301/.431 slash line with nine home runs and 37 RBI through 282 plate appearances, though.

Fantasy Tip: Phegley will go back to his usual duties, which involve serving as a backup to regular C/1B Stephen Vogt. Phegley doesn't play often enough to merit regular fantasy value, and even when he does Phegley isn't too impressive.

Fantasy Tip: Throwing already is a good sign, however, Gray will need to show more to be activated when eligible Monday, June 6. Be patient with Gray, but you'll likely want to be careful about who you start him against until he proves he is back to being a productive fantasy arm. Gray posted a 6.19 ERA through his first nine starts of the season. Stay tuned for updates.

Oakland Athletics SP Zach Neal allowed eight hits and seven runs in four innings of work on Wednesday, May 25. Neal, who was recalled from Class AAA Nashville earlier in the day, was making his first major-league start. In a related move, RP Daniel Coulombe was optioned to Nashville.
Fantasy Tip: Neal was 5-1 with a 2.53 in seven starts at Class AAA, but the finesse righty didn't miss many bats against the Mariners. While he may see additional starts with Sonny Gray and Henderson Alvarez out of action, Neal isn't someone you'll want to try your luck with.

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) threw at a distance of 75 feet Tuesday, May 24, and did not experience any issues. He plans to throw at a distance of 90 feet Wednesday, May 25, according to manager Bob Melvin.
Fantasy Tip: It's a promising sign that Alvarez is able to throw on consecutive days after being sidelined recently for a week due to shoulder discomfort. He deserves to be stashed in most fantasy leagues due to his potential to induce lots of ground balls at the hitter-friendly O.co Coliseum when healthy, although he won't rack up many strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Double check to see if Lowrie was dropped by his previous owners in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues. He's not bad in those setups for middle infield depth, as the switch-hitter is batting .302 on the season. He has little power, though, and also hasn't stolen a base this season.
Tue, 24 May 2016 23:27:20 -0700
Fantasy Tip: He has blown his last two save chances after converting his first 11. His WHIP is up to 1.33, and his ERA is 2.66. If he doesn't turn it around soon, Sean Doolittle could push for his old gig back.
Tue, 24 May 2016 18:14:16 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Lowrie likely will be an everyday player for Oakland once he is activated but may struggle at the plate early on. He is hitting .302 so far this season and is a low-end option in deeper mixed leagues. Owners in daily fantasy leagues may want to see him play in a game or two before considering him as a starting candidate.

Oakland Athletics SP Rich Hill allowed eight hits and no walks while fanning six in eight shutout innings to beat the Seattle Mariners Monday, May 23. The outing included a bases-loaded situation with no one out that Hill got out of.
Fantasy Tip: Hill has SP1 numbers with a 2.18 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and 65 K's in 57 2/3 innings. He's a daily consideration whenever he starts.

Oakland Athletics OF Khris Davis (forearm) will serve as the designated hitter against Seattle Mariners SP Taijuan Walker Monday, May 23. 1B Max Muncy is not in the starting lineup, while OF Jake Smolinski will start at right field and is batting ninth.
Fantasy Tip: Davis is hitting .300 with four home runs and eight RBI over the last seven days but is a risky option because of the injury. Smolinski is hitting only .111 since joining Oakland and should be avoided in all leagues.
Mon, 23 May 2016 17:55:08 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Good news for Oakland that the right-hander is able to get back on the mound, though it's still a little concerning that it's taken the former All-Star this long, as his initial timetable had him returning at some point in May. That does not look like it will happen, but Alvarez can certainly help out fantasy teams as soon as he's ready to return. Keep monitoring his progress.

Oakland Athletics OF Josh Reddick's (thumb) fracture in his thumb is not in the joint, but rather closer to the tip. That equals about four weeks of recovery, which is towards the lower end of expectations.
Fantasy Tip: While it's bad timing for Reddick's injury, considering he's been out to a scorching start in 2016, he at least receives this bit of good news that should have him back before the end of June. In the meantime, Jake Smolinski is the biggest beneficiary, but owners should wait till he displays some sort of consistency before thinking of adding him.
Mon, 23 May 2016 17:25:53 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Neal will bring some potential along with him, considering he was 5-1 with a 2.53 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in seven starts in the Pacific Coast League. He could be a sneaky play for daily leagues on Wednesday, as he'll be working from pitcher-friendly Safeco Field as well. Keep him on your radars in case he picks up where he left off at Class AAA.
