Athletics | Jed Lowrie expected to play 2B

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 10:09:29 -0800

Oakland Athletics SS Jed Lowrie can play multiple infield positions, but he's expected to open the year as Oakland's starting second baseman.

Fantasy Tip: Lowrie had some success in his last stop in Oakland, but that doesn't mean he'll repeat it in 2016. He has some pop in his bat, but O.co Coliseum will limit that ceiling. Lowrie is only eligible at third base to start, too, and he'll mainly be an infield target in deep mixed leagues at the tail end of drafts.

Athletics | Yonder Alonso to play every day

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 10:07:43 -0800

Oakland Athletics 1B Yonder Alonso is expected to play nearly every day with his new squad in 2016. He's more of a defensive whiz and hasn't hit more than nine home runs in a season, but he has an average of .340 for his on-base percentage in his six seasons, and he managed to hit .282 in 103 games in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Average and on-base percentage are Alonso's strengths, so he's more attractive in leagues that count OBP. He can be useful in daily leagues against certain right-handers, too.

Athletics | Ryan Madson expected to be setup man

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 10:02:54 -0800

Oakland Athletics RP Ryan Madson is expected to serve as the eighth-inning setup man for RP Sean Doolittle, with RPs John Axford and Liam Hendriks.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle is coming off an injury marred season, so Madson, and in deeper leagues, Axford, makes sense as fantasy handcuffs to Doolittle. Madson could also be useful for his strikeouts abilities in deeper leagues.

Athletics | Coco Crisp expected to start in LF

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 16:28:47 -0800

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp is expected to start in left field for the A's in 2016, if he's healthy. However, the 36-year-old played in just 44 games last year because of neck issues. 1B Mark Canha will see time at first base, but he, along with OFs Sam Fuld, Jake Smolinski and Andrew Lambo can fill in in the outfield.

Fantasy Tip: Canha gives fantasy owners the most to like of this group after drilling 16 home runs and driving in 70 RBI in 2015. How many games can you realistically expect Crisp to play given his age and injury concerns? There's a good chance he becomes a bench player even if he's healthy.

Athletics | Stephen Vogt had elbow surgery

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 15:07:17 -0800

Oakland Athletics C Stephen Vogt (elbow) had surgery on his right elbow, and his recovery timetable is expected to be four to six weeks. Vogt is expected to be ready for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: Vogt had a career year as the A's starting catcher in 2015, hitting .261 with 18 home runs and 71 RBI. He'll be behind in spring training, so it's entirely possible he could open the season on the disabled list. That'll likely cause his draft stock to suffer, if ever so slightly.

Athletics | Billy Butler prepping for rebound season

Mon, 25 Jan 2016 14:47:54 -0800

Oakland Athletics 1B Billy Butler has ramped up his offseason conditioning routine leading into the 2016 campaign. "I think I'm getting older and I've got to do more things to stay young," Butler said. "I'm not old, but I'm old in baseball terms, getting there. It's one of those things where I've got to do more to keep up with these young bucks."

Fantasy Tip: Butler's batting average and RBI total has progressively dipped in each of the past three seasons following his career-best showing in 2012. Last year, Butler returned an underwhelming .251/.323/.390 slash line with just 15 home runs and 65 RBI, and at a deep fantasy position, it wasn't good enough to make him anything more than a cavernous mixed and AL-only option. He is an endgame flier to target in deep mixed league drafts entering the 2016 season.

Athletics | Coco Crisp swinging a bat

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 23:51:17 -0800

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp (ankle, hip) has started to hit, but he said Sunday, Jan. 24, that he will not know until spring training what kind of shape he is in.

Fantasy Tip: Crisp could be limited to start the season. If you plan to take Crisp in fantasy, plan to have plenty of depth on hand since he has a propensity for injury.

Athletics | Interested in Josh Reddick for long term

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 23:50:09 -0800

The Oakland Athletics are interested in keeping OF Josh Reddick long term. He can be a free agent after the 2016 season. Negotiations have not started, and he indicated he is not interested in extending talks into the season because it could be a distraction for him and the team.

Fantasy Tip: Reddick could have a giant season for fantasy owners as he plays for a big paypay. He should be viewed as a Top 40 fantasy outfielder in mixed formats.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle will not be restricted

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 23:49:20 -0800

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) said Sunday, Jan. 24, that he has no more shoulder issues and he will not be restricted in spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle is expected to be the team's closer with Ryan Madson working in a setup role in the eighth inning. If he is 100 percent, Doolittle could re-emerge as a must-start fantasy option in most seasonal formats.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez unlikely before May

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 23:47:51 -0800

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) is unlikely to make his team debut until May, general manager David Forst said Sunday, Jan. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez is making his way back from shoulder surgery last July. He could be a tremendous fantasy option once he debuts as O.co Coliseum is a great pitcher's park.

Athletics | Jarrod Parker considered a starter

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 23:47:15 -0800

Oakland Athletics SP Jarrod Parker (elbow) is expected to appear in spring training games, manager Bob Melvin said Sunday, Jan. 24. For now, Parker is considered a member of the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Parker is a big-time injury risk heading into the 2016 season. He isn't a bad low-risk option in the later rounds on draft day.

Athletics | Jesse Hahn throwing without pain

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 23:46:20 -0800

Oakland Athletics SP Jesse Hahn (elbow) is expected to be ready for spring training. He said Sunday, Jan. 24, that he is throwing without pain.

Fantasy Tip: Hahn appears to be ready for the regular season, but he is an injury risk for fantasy owners in AL-only leagues and deeper mixed formats.

Athletics | Josh Reddick ready to talk extension

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 13:40:20 -0800

Oakland Athletics OF Josh Reddick is ready to discuss a contract extension with his team.

Fantasy Tip: Reddick hit .272 last season and cut down on his strikeouts, and that alone has made him more attractive to fantasy players. Middle rounds of AL and mixed drafts will benefit from Reddick's presence.

Athletics | Josh Reddick avoids arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 14:27:06 -0800

Oakland Athletics OF Josh Reddick re-signed a one-year, $6.575 million contract to avoid arbitration Friday, Jan. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Reddick had a sneaky good season in 2015, and it is no coincidence playing 149 games had a lot to do with it. He scored 67 runs, hit 20 home runs and drove in 77 RBI with a respectable .272/.333/.449 slash line. Plus, he stole 10 bases. Five-category production is rare and Reddick is a potential value grab in the middle rounds of drafts, especially if he falls.

Athletics | Danny Valencia avoids arbitration

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 15:31:24 -0800

Oakland Athletics 3B Danny Valencia avoided arbitration Thursday, Jan. 14, by agreeing to a one-year, $3.15 million deal.

Fantasy Tip: Valencia played above his head in 2015, hitting a combined .290 with 18 home runs and 66 RBI with the Toronto Blue Jays and A's. He's likely to serve in a part-time role in Oakland at least against left-handed pitchers. It'll be hard for him to match his numbers, and a full season in Oakland will hurt his power output.
