Oakland Athletics news, rumors and injuries

Oakland Athletics OF Josh Reddick has been aiming to reach base more consistently and strike out less this season, even if it means he hits fewer home runs. "As much as I would like more power numbers, I'm not going to go home and beat myself up for it, because I can still be a natural 15-20 (home runs per season) guy whether I'm trying to or not," Reddick said. "With that thought process, the average is a lot higher, the strikeouts are down and I've become a better hitter."
Fantasy Tip: Reddick ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) currently sports a .278/.333/.452 slash line and his current .784 OPS is actually higher than his .768 mark from his 32-homer showing in 2012. Still, fantasy owners would love to see a home run spike down the stretch from Reddick, but it doesn't look likely with his new plate approach. Reddick is a low-end outfield option in mixed leagues, and he isn't worth targeting at FantasyScore unless he lands in a ripe matchup.

Fantasy Tip: Despite his heavy home run allowance this year and lack of a role in the ninth inning, Scribner's numbers warranted ownership in much deeper leagues as a key bullpen arm for Oakland. You can now drop him anywhere he's owned.

Fantasy Tip: Phegley ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) isn't a bad choice on FantasyScore today against the lefty; he's hitting .294 (30-for-102) with four of his seven home runs against southpaws. Phegley will save you some notable money at the catching position, too.

Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray is 5-1 with a 2.60 ERA in nine career starts against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, including a 3-0 record and 2.51 ERA in four starts against them this season. Gray is facing the Angels again Wednesday, Sept. 2. He's on pace to finish with the lowest ERA in the American League since Pedro Martinez had a 1.74 ERA in 2000.
Fantasy Tip: Gray ($9,500, 19.0% of cap) is a solid daily choice as one of your two starting pitchers, as the Angels are in a deep rut. Los Angeles was dead last in the month of August with a .625 OPS as a team.

Fantasy Tip: With Bassitt ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) unavailable Tuesday, Cody Martin is making the start. That could just be a simple spot start for Martin, though, if Bassitt can return to the rotation shortly. Bassitt has been a key addition to Oakland's rotation and has only allowed more than three earned runs once in 10 starts. It's probably best to be cautious and avoid him on FantasyScore in his first start back, but he deserves to be held onto in deeper mixed leagues as long as he returns for the final month.

Oakland Athletics 3B Danny Valencia is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, Sept. 1. 3B Brett Lawrie is starting at third base and hitting second against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker. 2B Eric Sogard draws the start at the keystone and is batting leadoff, while 1B Mark Canha moves into the cleanup spot.
Fantasy Tip: Sogard's ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) daily value is at its highest hitting leadoff, but his light-hitting ways still make him a weaker second base pick on FantasyScore. Lawrie ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) and Canha ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) are much more attractive as value picks against a pitcher that has allowed 1.5 home runs per nine innings this year.

Oakland Athletics OF Billy Burns is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, Sept. 1. OF Jason Pridie is starting in center field and hitting eighth against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker.
Fantasy Tip: Pridie will be making his season debut for the A's, and he's had just 24 major league at-bats in the last three seasons. Avoid him on FantasyScore moving forward.

Fantasy Tip: Give Martin at least one start to show what he can do before depending upon him. He might simply get one look if Bassitt ends up being able to return sooner rather than later.

Oakland Athletics SP Chris Bassitt (shoulder) will go for an MRI Monday, Aug. 31, after experiencing soreness in his right shoulder in his last start. Cody Martin will start Tuesday, Sept. 1, in Bassitt's place.
Fantasy Tip: Bassitt ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) has emerged as a mainstay in the rotation for Oakland, but FantasyScore players will want to stay away until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game.
Mon, 31 Aug 2015 14:57:01 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Smolinski ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) has been receiving starts against lefties lately, but he doesn't boast outstanding numbers with a .237/.338/.390 slash line against southpaws. He is a risky FantasyScore play Monday. Crisp ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) remains a low-end option in all fantasy formats, and you can do better in the majority of seasonal leagues. After all, he currently sports a .154/.235/.202 line.
Mon, 31 Aug 2015 14:50:46 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Vogt ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) has a home run in consecutive games, so perhaps he is finally snapping out of his nearly two-month slump. Don't rule out a strong finish to the season for Vogt. Phegley ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) owns a .297/.343/.475 slash line against southpaws, and he checks out as a potential value play at FantasyScore Monday.
Mon, 31 Aug 2015 14:32:17 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Lawrie ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) missed the game Sunday, Aug. 30, because of a back injury. However, it shouldn't be viewed as a significant hindrance to his fantasy stock with him right back in the lineup. FantasyScore players should view Lawrie as a potential value play Monday. He owns a .298/.343/.500 slash line against southpaws this season. Reddick ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) carries significant risk Monday. He is pricey and owns an uninspiring .639 OPS against lefties.
Sun, 30 Aug 2015 11:55:32 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Remove Lawrie ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) from all fantasy lineups. Sogard ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) is only batting .235 with three RBIs this month and isn't a great FantasyScore option.
Sun, 30 Aug 2015 11:51:18 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Phegley ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is hitting .256 with one home run and six RBIs in 43 at-bats this month. Vogt ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) has demonstrated flashes of the play that made him an All-Star earlier this season, hitting .381 with four extra-base hits over the past week, so he may be worthy of a flier in FantasyScore this afternoon.
Sun, 30 Aug 2015 11:44:34 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Even though Canha ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) has taken over as the A's primary first baseman, he finds himself in left field because Stephen Vogt ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is getting a break from catching and playing first base instead. Canha has had a solid month, hitting .318 with two homers and 16 RBIs in 85 at-bats.
