Oakland Athletics news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: With Gray ($9,300, 18.6% of cap) likely out of the rotation for at least one turn, Chris Bassitt is considered likely to make the spot start Sunday. Bassitt allowed just one earned run over five innings in his lone major league start this season, and he can be considered as a cheap option for GPP tournaments on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Canha ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) is just 7-for-62 against southpaws this season, and he should be avoided for FantasyScore purposes.

Fantasy Tip: Phegley ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) is crushing left-handed pitching to the tune of a .340 batting average this season. Phegley is worth a start any time he's facing a southpaw, and he offers a measure of cap relief to FantasyScore owners.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle has no timetable for a return and won't even be guaranteed the closer's role probably whenever he does return. Of course that could become easier to attain if the A's deal Tyler Clippard at the trade deadline. For now, the best successors to the role are Evan Scribner and Drew Pomeranz.

Fantasy Tip: Butler ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is riding a modest four-game hit streak, but for the most part, his production has been mediocre throughout the year. Given his lack of upside, there are usually better options available at FantasyScore in the same price range.

Fantasy Tip: Clippard has recorded more than three outs in three of his last four saves, and the Athletics appear to have plenty of confidence in him. With Sean Doolittle still more than a month away, Clippard looks like a safe bet to hold down the closer's job for the remainder of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Gray ($9,300, 18.6% of cap) was treated for severe gastroenteritis, and he missed his start Tuesday, June 30. It is the only hiccup in what has been a dominant season for the young righty. Continue to check back for updates.

Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray (illness) is dealing with severe gastroenteritis and remains in the hospital. He continues to receive fluids and antibiotics, and he could be released from the hospital Wednesday, July 1, or Thursday, July 2. However, there is no timetable for his return to the mound, and the A's are keeping SP Chris Bassitt around in case Gray can't make his next turn Sunday, July 5.
Fantasy Tip: This is the only setback in what has been an excellent season for Gray ($9,300, 18.6% of cap) in 2015. A matchup against the Seattle Mariners Sunday is nice, but you should be skeptical of paying up for him on FantasyScore if he makes the start, since he could still be weak from his illness or on a pitch limit.

Fantasy Tip: Butler ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) hasn't seen much success against southpaws this season, going 13-for-59 (.220) against them with two of his six home runs. He's a mediocre first base option tonight on FantasyScore, especially at O.co Coliseum.
Tue, 30 Jun 2015 16:36:48 -0700
Oakland Athletics 1B Ike Davis is not starting against Colorado Rockies left-handed SP Jorge De La Rosa Tuesday, June 30. C Stephen Vogt is starting at first base, which allows C Josh Phegley to enter the starting lineup. OF Mark Canha is starting in left field and hitting seventh.
Fantasy Tip: Phegley ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) could be an excellent value play to save money at other positions tonight. He's sporting a .362/.423/.617 line with three of his five home runs off lefties in 47 at-bats this year. On the other hand, Vogt ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) and Canha ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) are weaker plays. Vogt has just one of his 13 long balls off lefties and Canha has just seven hits in 59 at-bats (.119) against southpaws in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Fuld ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) is another lefty stick but has much less offensive firepower than Reddick. We don't recommend Fuld in any daily lineups tonight.

Updating an ongoing story, Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray (flu) was hospitalized with flu-like symptoms Monday, June 29, and remains there Tuesday, June 30. Manager Bob Melvin said Gray is feeling better.
Fantasy Tip: The A's are unsure when Gray ($9,300, 18.6% of cap) will be released from the hospital or when his next start will come. It's safe to say that he'll be a considerable risk at FantasyScore given his price the next time he toes the rubber.
Tue, 30 Jun 2015 11:49:49 -0700
Fantasy Tip: It's unknown if Gray ($9,300, 18.6% of cap) will be pushed back and make his start tomorrow against the Rockies. He'll carry a bit more risky than usual if that's the case, but it's still an attractive matchup at pitcher-friendly O.co Coliseum.
Tue, 30 Jun 2015 11:42:05 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Make sure Gray ($9,300, 18.6% of cap) is removed from your FantasyScore lineups. Bassitt won't be available to use. Instead, consider stacking several or more Rockies hitters against Bassitt in this spot start.
Tue, 30 Jun 2015 11:13:44 -0700
Fantasy Tip: First of all, make sure you remove Gray ($9,300, 18.6% of cap) from all your FantasyScore lineups. In what was a game to avoid all Rockies batters, now has become one to consider stacking them in daily games against Bassitt.
