He will be competing with SPs Gio Gonzalez and Vincent Mazzaro for the spot in Spring Training. Manager Bob Geren said that Gonzalez may have "the best stuff" on the staff. Mazzaro is likely to begin the season at Class AAA.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports the Oakland Athletics made the trade for OF Willy Taveras with the intention of releasing or trading him. The Athletics view the deal as acquiring IF Adam Rosales for $1.3 million. Taveras is owed $4 million, and they dealt IF Aaron Miles and his $2.7 million salary. If a team signs Taveras after the A's released him, that team would pay him $405,000, and the A's would pay the rest. This would mean the Athletics acquired Rosales for $900,000, which is appealing to the team.
