New York Yankees news, rumors and injuriesThu, 23 May 2013 16:29:47 -0700 New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira (wrist) could head to Double-A Trenton on Tuesday, May 28, to begin his rehab assignment. Fantasy Tip: While optimistic, an early-June return now looks more possible. Whenever he comes back to the Bombers' lineup, expect a slow start, but depending on how his wrist responds, he could have a productive late-summer stretch. Share: Yankees | More injury updates Thu, 23 May 2013 14:36:55 -0700 New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman provided some news on battered players. SP Ivan Nova (triceps, oblique) will probably return to the team after their three-game series at the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend. 3B Kevin Youkilis (back) and RP Joba Chamberlain (oblique) are on track to return a few days later. SS Eduardo Nunez (ribcage) should return by the end of the month. Share: Yankees | Kevin Youkilis a week away Thu, 23 May 2013 13:45:45 -0700 New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said 3B Kevin Youkilis (back) is "maybe a week" away from returning from the 15-day disabled list. Fantasy Tip: Given Youkilis' reputation as a slower healer, don't be surprised if he doesn't make that timetable. The Yanks would rather err on the side of caution and make sure he's completely healthy. Once he returns, Jayson Nix's value as infield depth in cavernous leagues will come to an end. Share: Yankees | Chien-Ming Wang not an option for rotation Thu, 23 May 2013 13:30:24 -0700 New York Yankees SP Chien-Ming Wang, who is 2-4 with a 3.07 ERA with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, is not close to being called up to enter the rotation after allowing 49 hits in 44 innings pitched. Scouts have said Wang isn't showing he deserves a shot in the rotation. Wang can request his release if he's not brought up by June 1, and he's expected to use that out in his contract. Fantasy Tip: If Wang were to come up soon to the Bronx, he'd only be a rotation option for those desperate in AL-only formats. It's likely that Wang will end up as a free agent in a couple of weeks. Share: Yankees | Michael Pineda close to rehab assignment Thu, 23 May 2013 13:21:02 -0700 New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda (shoulder) has two more extended spring outings before he can start his 30-day rehab assignment, which means he could join the team's rotation by the end of June. However, general manager Brian Cashman said Pineda must be pitching well in order to be considered for a spot in the rotation. Fantasy Tip: It's too soon to say whether Pineda will immediately become an option for the Yankees' rotation in June, but it's likely that he'll get a chance to prove himself in the second half of the season. That's enough to peak interest in deep mixed leagues if you're looking for rotation help by then. Share: Yankees | Hiroki Kuroda expected to make next start Wed, 22 May 2013 20:22:20 -0700 Updating a previous report, New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Wednesday, May 22, that he would be "shocked" if SP Hiroki Kuroda (calf) missed a start due to the bruised calf he suffered after being hit by a comebacker. Share: Yankees | Hiroki Kuroda leaves start Wed, 22 May 2013 19:58:54 -0700 New York Yankees SP Hiroki Kuroda (calf) left his start Wednesday, May 22, against the Baltimore Orioles due to a right calf contusion. He was hit by a comebacker in the second inning, and left in the following frame. Share: Yankees | Injury updates Wed, 22 May 2013 15:25:30 -0700 New York Yankees SP Andy Pettitte (back) will play catch Thursday, May 23, and he'll do some long toss after that, followed by a bullpen and a simulated game. It's unclear if Pettitte will come off the disabled list when eligible next week. 1B Mark Teixeira (wrist) and 3B Kevin Youkilis (back) each received six at-bats in a simulated game Wednesday. 3B Alex Rodriguez (hip) had the day off from workouts. RP Joba Chamberlain (oblique) threw 13 pitches and is expected to have another rehab outing before coming off the DL. SP Ivan Nova (triceps) threw a light side session, but the team won't rush him back. Fantasy Tip: There isn't an imminent return from any of these players, and the Yankees are being cautious with all of them since their low-cost replacements have picked up the slack and carried them so far. Share: Yankees | Vidal Nuno to remain in rotation Wed, 22 May 2013 15:23:11 -0700 New York Yankees SP Vidal Nuno will remain in the rotation and start against the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday, May 25, with the team giving SP CC Sabathia an extra day of rest. Sabathia will start Sunday, May 26. Fantasy Tip: Nuno is an option for the pitching desperate in AL leagues, but just know that he'll likely be sent back to the minors when Andy Pettitte (back) returns from the disabled list. Share: Yankees | Outfield rotation to cease Wed, 22 May 2013 15:06:34 -0700 New York Yankees OF Ichiro Suzuki was in the lineup Wednesday, May 22, because he has good numbers against Baltimore Orioles SP Jason Hammel. The move shifted OF Curtis Granderson to center field. However, if there are no injuries, manager Joe Girardi is expected to settle on a specific outfield every day that should consist of OFs Vernon Wells, Brett Gardner and Granderson from left to right. Fantasy Tip: This seems to indicate that Suzuki will lose out on playing time, unless he's in the designated hitter role, which he'd have to share with Travis Hafner. There's less incentive to hold onto Suzuki in mixed leagues now, especially since he doesn't run as much near the end of his career. Share: Yankees | Alberto Gonzalez outrighted Tue, 21 May 2013 11:39:02 -0700 New York Yankees INF Alberto Gonzalez cleared waivers and was outrighted to the minors Tuesday, May 21. Share: Yankees | Chris Stewart works out Mon, 20 May 2013 15:33:58 -0700 New York Yankees C Chris Stewart (groin) took some soft toss Monday, May 20, and he felt OK. Stewart is still available in an emergency with C Austin Romine starting against the Baltimore Orioles. Share: Yankees | Kevin Youkilis taking BP Mon, 20 May 2013 13:36:34 -0700 New York Yankees 3B Kevin Youkilis (back) continued to take on-field batting practice Monday, May 20, and he also took grounders at third base and made throws to first and second base. Fantasy Tip: At this stage of his career, Youkilis has been oft-injured and has been slow to recover from his injuries. If he's on your roster, he's a big injury risk. There is no timetable for his return, but when he's back, he'll likely be the primary first baseman until Mark Teixeira (wrist) returns. Share: Yankees | Alex Rodriguez begins third week of rehab Mon, 20 May 2013 13:21:27 -0700 New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez (hip) started his third week of on-field rehab with defensive drills and hitting in the cages Monday, May 20. He fielded grounders and took 25 swings in batting practice in an indoor cage. He also ran from foul pole to foul pole four times. Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez is scheduled to be re-evaluated after his third week of baseball activities. Still, he's expected to return after the All-Star break. It's definitely good news to see Rodriguez on the field and swinging a bat, though. Share: Yankees | Derek Jeter to have checkup Mon, 20 May 2013 12:38:16 -0700 New York Yankees SS Derek Jeter (ankle) will have another checkup with Dr. Robert Anderson this week. Fantasy Tip: Depending on how Jeter is progressing, he may be in line to have his walking boot removed. After that, he'll need to resume baseball activities before playing in extended spring games. Jeter won't be back until after the All-Star break, though. Share: ![]() |
