Fantasy Baseball Player Prospecting: Kyle Gibson, Anthony Rendon, more Kyle Gibson proving he's almost ready for the bigs. Archie Bradley and others doing their best to reach them this year, as well. Fantasy Baseball Round Table: Assessing teams at quarter pole The MLB season is about 1/4 of the way complete. Where do your teams sit, and what -- if anything -- do you do to improve your chances of winning? New York Mets news, rumors and injuriesMon, 20 May 2013 16:12:43 -0700 New York Mets struggling 1B Ike Davis was dropped to sixth in the lineup Monday, May 20, after his week-long trial in the cleanup spot was up. 2B Daniel Murphy is remaining in the leadoff spot against the Cincinnati Reds. Murphy hit the go-ahead home run in the leadoff spot for the first time this year Sunday, May 19. Murphy has an eight-game hitting streak. Davis went 1-for-24 in six games back in the cleanup spot last week. OF Rick Ankiel will hit second for the first time. Fantasy Tip: The Mets are considering demoting Davis to the minor leagues if he doesn't turn it around very soon, so you should be at the point where you are considering cutting him from your team, too, especially if you're in a shallow mixed league. Share: Mets | David Aardsma signs Mon, 20 May 2013 11:46:07 -0700 The New York Mets signed free-agent RP David Aardsma (Marlins) to a minor league deal Monday, May 20, and assigned him to Triple-A Las Vegas. Share: Mets | Daniel Murphy given leadoff shot Sun, 19 May 2013 23:45:27 -0700 The New York Mets put OF Daniel Murphy at the top of the lineup Sunday, May 19, against the Chicago Cubs, and indications are he may stay there if the lineup needs a little tinkering to revive the offense. Murphy went 1-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored, and he is now 3-for-20 in 23 career plate appearances from the top of the order, Mets' leadoff hitters are batting just .186 from the top spot, last in the National League. The team has scored three runs or fewer in 10 of their last 13 games. Share: Mets | Haven't discussed acquiring Daric Barton Sat, 18 May 2013 12:50:43 -0700 A New York Mets executive said the team has not yet discussed acquiring 1B Daric Barton, who was designated for assignment by the Oakland Athletics. Share: Mets | Ike Davis could be demoted next week Sat, 18 May 2013 11:24:34 -0700 According to a team source, the New York Mets could demote struggling 1B Ike Davis to the minor leagues as soon as next week. Members of the organization's front office are reportedly more in favor of the move than manager Terry Collins. Davis snapped an 0-for-24 streak against the Chicago Cubs Friday, May 17. Fantasy Tip: OF Andrew Brown, who was recently demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas, played first base for the first time this season Friday, and would appear to be the most likely candidate to be called up if Davis is sent down. INFs Zach Lutz and Josh Satin are also candidates, although Satin is not on the 40-man roster. Share: Mets | Jenrry Mejia makes rehab appearance Fri, 17 May 2013 19:04:31 -0700 New York Mets RP Jenrry Mejia (forearm) allowed two earned runs, five hits and three walks over three innings in his first minor-league rehab start with Class A St. Lucie Friday, May 17. He also totaled six strikeouts in the appearance. Share: Mets | Jonathon Niese raises arm angle Fri, 17 May 2013 16:24:08 -0700 New York Mets SP Jonathon Niese said he unconsciously dropped his arm angle early this year due to arm discomfort, which led to poor results. Niese tried to fix the issue with a 70-plus pitch bullpen session Monday, May 13. He held the St. Louis Cardinals to two runs and six hits while walking two in 7 1/3 innings Thursday, May 16, after giving up 15 runs in 8 1/3 innings in his previous two starts. "I tried to keep my arm in that good arm slot and it worked out today," Niese said about throwing from a higher arm angle. "… I'm just glad (pitching coach) Dan (Warthen) and I were able to get that good work in the bullpen and figure out what was going wrong mechanically. Fortunately, I was able to fix it." Share: Mets | Travis d'Arnaud to remain in boot Fri, 17 May 2013 15:27:45 -0700 New York Mets C Travis d'Arnaud (foot) will remain in a walking boot for another two weeks and won't be allowed to bear weight on his foot. d'Arnaud had a checkup with a doctor Friday, May 17, after he fractured his left foot four weeks ago. Fantasy Tip: This is disappointing news for those hoping that d'Arnaud would have already been up in the bigs by now. The success of John Buck and another tough break for d'Arnaud has tempered those expectations, though. Don't expect the catching prospect to make his Mets debut until later this year now. Share: Mets | Zack Wheeler on minor league DL Fri, 17 May 2013 14:59:59 -0700 The New York Mets placed SP Zack Wheeler (collarbone) on the minor league seven-day disabled list at Triple-A Las Vegas Friday, May 17, but he'll pitch May 22. His DL stint was backdated to his last start. Fantasy Tip: This won't affect Wheeler's timetable to be called up for his major league debut this year, which is expected to come as early as this summer. Keep a close eye on him in all formats. Share: Mets | No plans to demote Ike Davis Fri, 17 May 2013 08:28:19 -0700 The New York Mets have no plans to send 1B Ike Davis down to the minors. Fantasy Tip: Davis is hitting just .157 and has struck out 45 times in 127 at-bats. He might be a good buy-low option. He had his most productive month with 24 RBIs last June and hit nine homers in July. You're going to have to bite the bullet with his low batting average. Share: Mets | Ike Davis to remain in cleanup spot Thu, 16 May 2013 15:07:30 -0700 New York Mets manager Terry Collins said struggling 1B Ike Davis will remain in the cleanup spot this weekend, at least until Sunday, May 19, when they face a left-handed pitcher. Davis went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts Thursday, May 16, to drop his average to .157. He is hitless in his last 22 at-bats. "Through this weekend," Collins said. "I told him last week that this week, when we play against right-handed pitchers, he's going to hit fourth. That's where he belongs. And that's where he's supposed to hit." Collins said opposing pitchers are feeding Davis with plenty of offspeed pitches, but Davis said he's struggling because he's missing fastballs early in the count. Fantasy Tip: Davis is severely testing Collins' and fantasy owners' patience. He's notoriously a slow starter in April, but now his slump has leaked into mid-May, and he hasn't shown any signs of turning it around. In shallow leagues, it's worth considering dropping him for better options. Mitch Moreland and James Loney are a few peaking first basemen, for example. In deeper leagues, he needs to be benched for the forseeable future. Share: Mets | Jonathon Niese makes adjustments Wed, 15 May 2013 20:36:04 -0700 New York Mets SP Jonathon Niese spent the week refining his mechanics in front of a weight room mirror, trying to keep his body tall and on a straight line. Those were the issues that he considered crucial to his recent struggles, resulting in 15 runs over his past two starts. "Whenever I had free time, I just stepped in front of a mirror and went through my mechanics, and made sure everything's on line," Niese said Wednesday, May 15. "I can feel when it's right." Share: Mets | Tim Byrdak throws in bullpen Wed, 15 May 2013 20:35:15 -0700 New York Mets RP Tim Byrdak (shoulder) threw his first bullpen session Wednesday, May 15, since undergoing shoulder surgery. He threw 20 pitches - all fastball - and expects to throw a 25-pitch session Saturday, May 18. He is hopeful of returning to the big club by July 1. Share: Mets | Zack Wheeler fine Wed, 15 May 2013 13:29:01 -0700 New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (collarbone) was diagnosed with inflammation in his clavicle, and he'll be fine. He received a cortisone shot and should start throwing in a couple of days. Fantasy Tip: The Mets were expecting this to be a minor injury, and Wheeler's tests confirmed this. He'll likely miss one start and resume his work for Triple-A Las Vegas. Keep him on your radar in all formats, as we'll likely see him make his major league debut at some point this summer. Share: Mets | Ike Davis dropped in order Tue, 14 May 2013 15:22:20 -0700 New York Mets 1B Ike Davis was dropped to seventh in the order with the team facing a left-hander Tuesday, May 14. However, manager Terry Collins will put Davis back in the cleanup spot Wednesday, May 15. C John Buck is batting cleanup Tuesday. Fantasy Tip: Davis has struggled mightily so far this season, especially against left-handed hurlers. In shallow leagues, Davis might not might be worth the roster spot right now, and he should definitely be benched against most lefties right now in all other formats. Share: ![]() |
