Twins | Aaron Hicks optioned to Class AAA

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 06:47:12 -0700

Minnesota Twins OF Aaron Hicks was optioned to Triple-A Rochester Saturday, March 28.

Fantasy Tip: Hicks hit .206 (7-for-40) this spring and has a .201 batting average through 467 at-bats in his career. The once promising outfielder has now lost the center field job three times. He is a stash candidate in deep AL-only leagues, but can be dropped in all mixed formats.

Twins | Tommy Milone named fifth starter

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 06:40:11 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Tommy Milone will be the fifth starter and is expected to make his first start Saturday, April 11, against the Chicago White Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Milone's ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) K/9 dropped to 5.7 last season and his career 3.98 ERA doesn't help in mixed leagues. He is just another arm to stream in favorable matchups, and it is likely best to take a wait-and-see approach with him in FantasyScore contests, too.

Twins | Rafael Soriano an option for Twins?

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 14:25:29 -0700

Free-agent RP Rafael Soriano (Nationals) is drawing interest from the Minnesota Twins, and they have inquired about watching him throw, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: If Soriano landed with the Twins, he'd likely be a secondary closing option to Glen Perkins, who has dealt with injury this spring. Soriano doesn't have much fantasy value at all unless he's closing, though.

Twins | Miguel Sano ahead of schedule?

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 15:06:53 -0700

Minnesota Twins 3B Miguel Sano (elbow) has progressed well from his 2014 Tommy John surgery, according to director of minor league operations Brad Steil. "You can see that he's a little bit rusty," Steil said, "but maybe a little farther ahead than maybe you would expect after being out for so long."

Fantasy Tip: Sano projects as a high-end power hitter, however he is expected to spend a significant amount of time in the minors this season. He is a late-round stash candidate in deep mixed and AL-only leagues, but in the majority of formats, Sano is just a name to watch. He is worth adding in all formats if he forces a recall with a huge start in the minors, and it is possible given his potential.

Twins | Byron Buxton showing rust

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 14:56:56 -0700

Minnesota Twins OF Byron Buxton appears rusty and not where he was two years ago in terms of his swing, according to director of minor league operations Brad Steil. Buxton agrees, "I still haven't gotten my swing down pat yet, but I feel good at the plate. I feel good about my at-bats. It's helping me along the way. My swing is coming."

Fantasy Tip: At this point, Buxton's fantasy value largely depends on league format. In the majority of leagues, he is a player to watch and worth a speculative add if he out produces his surroundings after appears close to being recalled. He is a stash candidate in AL-only formats and cavernous mixed leagues, but don't be surprised if he only sees a September cup of coffee in the majors in 2015. Still, Buxton is one of the most coveted prospects in the minor leagues.

Twins | Brian Dozier signs extension

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 06:03:18 -0700

Minnesota Twins 2B Brian Dozier signed a four-year, $20 million extension Tuesday, March 24.

Fantasy Tip: Dozier's ($5,700; 11.4% of your cap) power potential makes him a darling in daily games. He's one of the top second basemen available on FantasyScore.

Twins | Josmil Pinto has concussion

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 14:50:04 -0700

Minnesota Twins C Josmil Pinto (concussion) will miss the next five days as he goes through concussion-related rehab.

Fantasy Tip: Kurt Suzuki is projected to start as the No. 1 catcher, but Pinto could gain more playing time if his bat heats up. This is a minor setback, but it bears watching as the season starts. Pinto may be worth a late-round flier, especially if you have Suzuki and would like his backup.

Twins | Minnesota CF competition open

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 13:53:45 -0700

Minnesota Twins OFs Aaron Hicks, Jordan Schafer, Eddie Rosario and Shane Robinson are essentially all battling for the starting center field job in spring training, according to manager Paul Molitor. Molitor said the competition remains wide open, but Hicks is believed to be the favorite for the job and has hit .300/.400/.500 with two triples and two RBI in eight games. Rosario has also turned heads, but he's not on the current active roster and hasn't played above Class AA. Molitor thinks Hicks needs to win the job to make the roster, too, because the team wants him to play every day to further his development.

Fantasy Tip: With Hicks being the favorite for the job, he has to carry the most fantasy value, albeit limited. Hicks could also end up in a platoon in center, which makes his path to consistent at-bats shaky. None of these options should be drafted in standard leagues, and even Hicks is only worth a low investment in AL-only formats.

Twins | Glen Perkins pitches in game

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 10:39:02 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (oblique) threw a scoreless inning and allowed a hit in a minor league game Thursday, March 19. He threw nine of his 14 pitches for strikes and was between 90 and 93 mph on the radar gun. Perkins is expected to pitch again Saturday, March 21, and Tuesday, March 24.

Fantasy Tip: Perkins seems to be recovered from his oblique ailment, and if he doesn't have any setbacks, he should be ready to pitch on opening day. Consider Perkins a midrange closing option for your fantasy squad, and he may come at a discount because he's dealt with an injury in camp.

Twins | Glen Perkins throws 'pen

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 11:32:09 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (oblique) had a successful bullpen session with no setbacks Tuesday, March 17, and he'll pitch in a minor league game Thursday, March 19. Perkins has been dealing with a mild right oblique strain. He could make his spring debut this weekend if all goes well Thursday. Perkins is expected to be ready for the start of the season if he doesn't have any setbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Because he's a reliever, Perkins doesn't need many innings or outings in spring training to be regular season-ready. Right now, he may be going at a nice value in fantasy drafts as a midrange closing option. Take advantage if you can.

Twins | Glen Perkins has enough time

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 09:56:54 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (oblique) should have enough time to get ready for the start of the regular season as long as he doesn't suffer any setbacks, according to general manager Terry Ryan.

Fantasy Tip: Oblique injuries are tricky, so don't be surprised if he isn't ready for opening day. The injury may make Perkins a value pick on draft day, so keep that in mind when you're searching for midrange closers in the middle rounds of your draft.

Twins | Brian Dozier off to hot start

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 14:38:47 -0700

Minnesota Twins 2B Brian Dozier has seven hits in his first 13 at-bats of the spring.

Fantasy Tip: Dozier was out due to illness earlier in spring camp and has rebounded well. Yes, it's spring and the stats don't count, but Dozier is still a solid second-base selection and a good mid-round pick in AL and mixed leagues.

Twins | Byron Buxton sent to minors

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 14:13:59 -0700

Minnesota Twins OF Byron Buxton was among the players sent to minor league camp on Sunday, March 15.

Fantasy Tip: Buxton is considered the top prospect in all of Major League Baseball, and it is a possibility he will be called up later this season depending on how well his minor league campaign goes. If your league allows drafting of players regardless of whether they are sent to the minors, he is worth the risk in late rounds.

Twins | Miguel Sano reassigned

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 13:37:54 -0700

Minnesota Twins 3B Miguel Sano was reassigned to minor league camp on Sunday, March 15.

Fantasy Tip: If you can draft Sano in your league, do it. The odds are he will be up sooner rather than later, perhaps as early as midseason or a little later if his bat tears it up in the minors. Sano is the No. 2 prospect in the organization behind Byron Buxton and is one of the top prospects in all of MLB.

Twins | Glen Perkins plans to play catch Friday

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 14:28:06 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (oblique) said his right oblique strain is improving, and he is scheduled to play catch Friday, March 13. Perkins will throw off a mound again Saturday, March 14, if all goes well Friday. He still expects to be ready for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: Perkins has 70 saves over the past two seasons, and as long as he is healthy, he'll be the go-to man in the ninth for Minnesota. Continue to check back for updates on Perkins' progress this spring. There could be a lot of room for profit, if Perkins begins sliding too deep in drafts.
