Minnesota Twins INF Luke Hughes (shoulder) is headed to Minnesota to have his right shoulder looked at after being injured in a home plate collision in an Australian Winter League game. Hughes will battle for a utility infield spot in spring training. "He had an MRI in Australia," general manager Terry Ryan said. "We're going to bring him in here, probably Thursday or Friday, to make sure everything's in order. He'll go right to Fort Myers (Fla.) for spring training."

Twins | Scott Diamond throws year round

Minnesota Twins SP Scott Diamond resumed throwing shortly after Thanksgiving, and he plans to report early to the team's spring training complex this month. "I shut it down for a little bit," Diamond said. "But I'm one of those guys who feels like the longer I shut it down, the rustier I get. So I only took about two weeks off from throwing and was playing catch three to four days a week. It was nothing big - just keeping the changeup and curveball where (they) need to be." He is hoping to win a spot in the bullpen out of spring training.

Twins | Stuck with Tsuyoshi Nishioka

Minnesota Twins OF Joe Benson was robbed at gunpoint in Venezuela while down there playing winter ball with Tigres de Aragua. Benson was robbed when the taxicab he was in hit a boulder and crashed. As the Spanish-speaking cab driver was making a call from his cell phone, three gunmen approached Benson. They took everything he had except for a bag that contained some baseball spikes and a few T-shirts. "When you don't speak the language, there's not much you can do," Benson said. "You can't really beg for your life. You can't ask them not to pull the trigger. You can't beg for mercy. I kind of sat there in silence, let everything happen."

Minnesota Twins RP Joel Zumaya will make $850,000 this year, but is only guaranteed $400,000. He can make a total of $1.8 million if he reaches his incentives; he can make $50,000 for pitching in 30 games, $50,000 for 35 games, $100,000 for 40 games, $125,000 for 45 games, $150,000 for 50 games, $200,000 for 55 games and $250,000 for 60 games. If he pitches in more than 60 games, he'll make an extra $900,000. He can also make $25,000 for being an All-Star, $50,000 for the ALCS MVP and $100,000 for the World Series MVP.

Twins | Danny Valencia worked to improve offense, defense

Minnesota Twins 3B Danny Valencia studied video of his defense last year, in which he committed 18 errors, the most by a third baseman in team history since 1990. "I had a couple false steps when I would move (leaving his head out of position)," Valencia said. "I also realized I could set up a little earlier and stay lower defensively." He made corrections mechanically and worked to improve his speed and agility this offseason.

He also studied his at-bats and made a small change concerning his hands; he is now bringing his hands straight back in his swing, giving him a much straighter path to the ball instead of trapping his hands toward his body, forcing a longer swing.

Twins | Alexi Casilla helped by winter ball

Minnesota Twins 2B Alexi Casilla (hamstring) was impressive in winter ball in the Dominican Republic, batting .336 with an .831 OPS in 31 regular season games for Gigantes del Cibao, and he batted .397 in 17 playoff games. He missed 57 of the Twins' final 58 regular season games due to a strained right hamstring, but he was healthy enough for winter ball and feels that the strong performance will get him back on track.

Minnesota Twins OF Josh Willingham said Saturday, Jan. 28, that he is looking forward to the challenge of playing right field, despite the fact he has primarily played left field in his career. "Hopefully this spring I'll just get a lot of reps out there and get comfortable," Willingham said. "That's the goal. Playing on the opposite end of the field, it's different, the way the balls come off the bat, so it'll just take a little bit of time to get used to."

Twins | Tom Kelly's No. 10 jersey to be retired

The Minnesota Twins will retire former manager Tom Kelly's No. 10 jersey during a pregame ceremony Sept. 8, before a game against the Cleveland Indians. Kelly led the Twins to World Series championships in 1987 and 1991 and is the franchise's all-time winningest manager with 1,140 victories over 15-plus seasons. He currently serves as a special assistant to general manager Terry Ryan.

Minnesota Twins 1B Justin Morneau (wrist, finger) found out during the offseason that he is allergic to gluten. He also said Friday, Jan. 27, that he still cannot feel his left index finger, and it might take two years. He said he should be able to take live batting practice at the start of spring training, however.

Minnesota Twins OF Denard Span (concussion) said he still had rough days in terms of his head during the offseason, but he adjusted his diet and has stopped drinking caffeine to help get him past his migraines and fogginess from his concussion. Span has been doing eye therapy three to four times a week. Span is expected to play center field with OF Ben Revere in left and OF Josh Willingham in right. SS Trevor Plouffe is expected to be the fourth outfielder.

Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire expects OF Denard Span to hit leadoff and play center field this year. "(Span's) going to lead off and be my center fielder," Gardenhire said. "That's my expectations. If somebody were to tell me that he's not able to do that, then we'd have to ad lib. But if Denard comes in healthy, then he's my center fielder, there's no questions to me about that."

"Whatever it takes to keep (Morneau) and Mauer on the field is what we're going to do. And I don't care what that entails - if it's Mauer at first and Mornie DH-ing, we're going to do it. Whatever we feel comfortable with is the way we're going to go about our business here."
