Twins | Byron Buxton dealing with flu

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 13:40:41 -0800

Minnesota Twins OF Byron Buxton (flu) is downplaying the two days he has missed in camp with the flu. He was back in action Tuesday, March 3, and said he felt fine. Buxton missed 31 combined games between High-Single-A Fort Myers and Double-A New Britain in 2014 with various injuries. After dealing with that, he has a better grasp on how to keep his body healthy this year. Manager Paul Molitor doesn't seem concerned over the time Buxton has missed due to injuries in the minors.

Fantasy Tip: Before his injuries in 2014, Buxton was baseball's consensus No. 1 prospect. Speed is the biggest part of his game, but he should grow into his power stroke over time. Buxton will likely start at Class AA this year, but he could be up in the majors sometime this summer. Draft accordingly in standard mixed leagues.

Twins | Miguel Sano on track for callup?

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 13:37:49 -0800

Minnesota Twins 3B Miguel Sano may be on track for a callup later this season, according to general manager Terry Ryan. Ryan did say later that he wasn't sure if a callup was realistic for 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Sano spent last year out due to elbow surgery, but he will only be 22 years old in May and he remains one of the top MLB prospects and a top Twins prospect. Depending on whether he is healthy and has a good minor league season, he may get that callup. Keep Sano in mind as a flyer at the end of some drafts.

Twins | Byron Buxton on track for 2015 callup?

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 13:32:35 -0800

Minnesota Twins OF Byron Buxton has a backer in general manager Terry Ryan, who said he hopes Buxton earns a callup later this season. Ryan also said he isn't sure if that is realistic.

Fantasy Tip: Buxton has battled injury issues that have sidetracked his progress, but he remains the Twins' top prospect and one of MLB's top prospects. Buxton may be worth a flyer in very late rounds in leagues that let you draft minor leaguers or keep players from year to year.

Twins | MIN, Brian Dozier in extension talks

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 12:45:40 -0800

Minnesota Twins 2B Brian Dozier and the team are making progress on a contract extension. The deal is believed to be close, although no terms have been disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Dozier hit .242 last season, but he did score 112 runs and hit 23 homers. He has 47 homers in three seasons. He will hurt your batting average, but Dozier's homers and run-scoring potential make him a middle-round selection in most leagues.

Twins | Joe Mauer won't bat lower than third

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 14:03:18 -0800

Minnesota Twins 1B Joe Mauer will not bat lower than third in the order, according to manager Paul Molitor.

Fantasy Tip: Without catcher eligibility, Mauer's fantasy stock plummets. At best, he is a three-category contributor (runs, RBIs and batting average), but last season he hit just .277. Additionally, Mauer turns 32 this season and should begin to see his numbers decline across the board. Expect his name value to push him into overrated territory in drafts, and there is no reason to target Mauer until the later middle rounds in mixed leagues.

Twins | Aaron Hicks in better shape

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 10:48:32 -0800

Minnesota Twins OF Aaron Hicks looks larger this spring in the shoulder area than he did last year.

Fantasy Tip: Hicks, just 25, has been a disappointment so far in Minnesota. He hit just .215 with one home run in 69 games in his second season in 2014. He'll be under the radar now, and the Twins don't have many sure things in their outfield, meaning Hicks could carve out consistent playing time if he can deliver on his skills. Consider him a worthwhile gamble on the cheap in AL-only formats.

Twins | Ervin Santana working on four pitches

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 12:27:29 -0800

Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana has started to throw a changeup and a two-seam pitch in addition to a fastball and a slider. Santana said he started to have confidence in those pitches so he has worked them in on a more regular basis.

Fantasy Tip: Santana is trying to keep his career renaissance going as he threw 179 strikeouts last year and posted a 3.95 ERA. He may make for a decent pitching option in deeper mixed leagues, but switching from the NL to the AL and wondering if the comeback will last are two question marks.

Twins | Byron Buxton slated for full camp

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 07:31:13 -0800

Minnesota Twins OF Byron Buxton (wrist, concussion) appears to be 100% and ready for camp when position players officially report Friday, Feb. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Buxton, one of the top prospects in all of baseball, will likely receive more seasoning in the minors after a 2014 limited by injuries. He could receive a cup of coffee this season and is worth monitoring.

Twins | Miguel Sano appears ready to go

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 07:29:13 -0800

Minnesota Twins 3B Miguel Sano (elbow) appears to be 100% and ready for camp when position players officially report Friday, Feb. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Sano is one of the team's top prospects, but after losing a season to Tommy John surgery, he's unlikely to be a factor until the latter part of the season.

Twins | Phil Hughes likely to start opener

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 14:15:28 -0800

Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes is slated to start the opener against the Detroit Tigers April 6, according to manager Paul Molitor. Hughes went 16-10 with a 3.52 ERA in 32 starts last year for Minnesota, and he set a major league record with an 11.63 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Hughes threw 73% of his pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: It's safe to say Hughes will see some form of regression in his second season with the Twins. While Minnesota was a great landing spot for the righty, be careful not to overvalue him in 2015 after the solid season he had last year. If you prepare for a fall back to reality, Hughes can be serviceable on your fantasy roster rounding out your pitching staff.

Twins | Minnesota monitoring Johan Santana

Sun, 22 Feb 2015 19:18:51 -0800

Free-agent SP Johan Santana (elbow) is expected to resume his throwing program this week, and the plan is to sign in the coming weeks. The Minnesota Twins are monitoring him, although beat writer Darren Wolfson does not see him as a fit.

Fantasy Tip: Santana started his career in the Twins organization and it would be a feel-good story to see him return to health and prominence where it all began. However, he has been so banged up over the past few years that the Cinderella story seems highly unlikely.

Twins | Jordan Schafer, Aaron Hicks to battle?

Mon, 16 Feb 2015 13:51:37 -0800

Minnesota Twins OFs Jordan Schafer and Aaron Hicks will be in the running for the starting center field job in 2015, with Schafer potentially being the most major league-ready option for the club. Schafer has had the better career to date, and he played better in 2014, too. Schafer has underperformed in his career, and he's cited a lack of consistent playing time as a result. He hit .285/.345/.362 after joining the Twins last year in less than 150 plate appearances. Schafer provides quickness in the outfield and on the bases, and he's excelled at hitting righties. Hicks, on the other hand, has hit lefties much better in his young career, so the two could make an interesting combination in a platoon in center field.

Fantasy Tip: At first glance and based off their splits, Schafer and Hicks figure to enter the season in a platoon role in center if the Twins plan on keeping Danny Santana at shortstop. Because of that, neither is an attractive option in mixed leagues. Schafer may have the slight edge in AL-only formats, but you have to consider that Byron Buxton may eventually enter the picture at some point this year, which would further complicate matters.

Sun, 15 Feb 2015 11:43:33 -0800

The Minnesota Twins could pursue a right-handed bat towards the end of spring training, according to a club official. They are continuing to scour the free agent market and have interest in signing players to minor league deals for depth purposes.

Twins | Tim Stauffer to compete for rotation spot

Thu, 12 Feb 2015 12:33:33 -0800

Minnesota Twins SP Tim Stauffer will compete for the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation during spring training but likely will be used as a relief pitcher if he does not win the job.
