Minnesota Twins news, rumors and injuries

The Minnesota Twins placed SS Eduardo Nunez (oblique) on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, May 5, due to a strained left oblique. The move is retroactive to April 30. The team purchased the contract of INF Doug Bernier from Triple-A Rochester.
Fantasy Tip: Nunez ($1,600; 3.2% of cap) is only worth using as a salary saver in FantasyScore when he is healthy.

Fantasy Tip: Hunter ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) is having a better time at the plate, and he's facing a strong pitching team in the Oakland Athletics. At this low cost he makes for a decent option as long as the numbers keep coming.

Minnesota Twins 1B Joe Mauer has never been much of a pull hitter in his career, with just 344 of his 1,540 hits (22.3%) going to the pull side in his 11 seasons before 2015. However, he's already pulled 10 of his 29 hits (33.5%) to right field through 25 games this year. But Mauer said it hasn't been a point of emphasis this year. "We talked about this in spring training. It's more of a physical thing than anything, just being able to move and being able to get to those pitches," Mauer said. "I've always had that approach of trying to spray the field. It's no different this year." Part of the reason may be because Mauer is being more aggressive early in counts, and manager Paul Molitor noticed Mauer is swinging at more first pitches than in the past. Mauer has swung at the first pitch seven times this year after swinging at the first pitch 27 times all of 2014. He is hitting .305 on the year after a career-low .277 average last season, and a return to full health has been a big reason why.
Fantasy Tip: Mauer ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) was left to the waiver wire in a lot of shallow mixed leagues, but he's worth a pickup if you're looking for consistency at a first base or corner infield spot.

Fantasy Tip: Arcia ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) should be stashed in a DL slot in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. In the shallowest of mixed leagues, he can probably be moved to the waiver wire if you don't have the roster space. Eduardo Escobar ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) could see the majority of starts in left field in his place, but he's merely a low-end outfield flier at FantasyScore.

Minnesota Twins OF Oswaldo Arcia (hip) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right hip flexor strain Monday, May 4. The Twins recalled OF Eddie Rosario up from Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move.
Fantasy Tip: Rosario was hitting only .242 at Rochester, and he's likely to serve as a bench player for Minnesota. In Arcia's absence, Eduardo Escobar ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) and Shane Robinson ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) could split playing time in the outfield. Neither player is more than a low-end flier at FantasyScore, and they aren't worth considering outside of deep AL-only leagues.

Minnesota Twins OF Byron Buxton was named the minor league's Southern League Player of the Week for April 27 through May 3. He has raised his average from .190 to .287 in the last week and has recorded multi-hit games in five contests while hitting four triples and stealing five bases. Buxton is currently playing for Double-A Chattanooga.
Fantasy Tip: Buxton is one of baseball's top prospects for the 2015 season. Injuries derailed his 2014 season in the low minor leagues, but he's bouncing back strong in 2015, hitting .287 (25-for-87) with two home runs, 12 RBI and seven stolen bases. He should already be owned in most AL-only leagues, and there's a good chance we could see him make his major league debut in Minnesota as early as this summer.

Fantasy Tip: Arcia ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) should be considered day-to-day for now, but even when he is in the lineup, doesn't offer much in the way of upside at FantasyScore.
Sun, 03 May 2015 18:33:22 -0700
Minnesota Twins 3B Trevor Plouffe went 3-for-5 with a grand slam, five RBIs and two runs scored in a 13-3 win over the Chicago White Sox Sunday, May 3, and he is hitting .364 since April 17. Plouffe credits working with hitting coach Tom Brunansky with his recent success.
Fantasy Tip: Plouffe ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) has three homers and 10 RBIs in his last five games, and he could make a nice source of cap relief at FantasyScore while he is swinging a hot bat.

Fantasy Tip: Suzuki ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) likely is receiving the day off and should return soon. Herrmann ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has seen limited playing time this season but is not a great option on FantasyScore.
Sat, 02 May 2015 13:21:31 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Ordinarily we wouldn't deal with players like Buxton, except he's one of the hottest prospects in baseball still in the minor leagues. If he keeps hitting like this the Twins might give him a look later in the season. Buxton is worth a draft pick in leagues that let you pick up minor leaguers.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) was in the midst of a fine start against the Detroit Tigers before his hip impingement knocked him out this week. The Oakland Athletics are a decent matchup for Hughes on Monday, but you may want to play it safe and avoid him at FantasyScore coming off a short outing.

Minnesota Twins OF Oswaldo Arcia is out of the starting lineup against a left-hander Friday, May 1. OF Shane Robinson is starting in center field and hitting eighth in the batting order against Chicago White Sox SP Jose Quintana.
Fantasy Tip: Robinson ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) had two hits last night and is hitting .342 (13-for-38) in limited duty as a backup outfield for the Twins. However, Robinson has very little offensive upside for those looking for a cheap outfield candidate at FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Schafer ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) won't be a popular or smart play at FantasyScore tonight coming off a knee injury, and he's hitting only .188 (9-for-48) with two RBI on the season. He's also facing a lefty, and he hit just .143 (7-for-49) with no homers against southpaws in 2014. Avoid him everywhere.
Thu, 30 Apr 2015 14:48:02 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Milone ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) posted a 7.20 ERA through 15 innings over his past three starts, so he held minimal fantasy value to begin with. He can be dropped in all mixed leagues. He is a low-upside stash in cavernous AL-only leagues, as he could be forced into starting duty again at some point this season.
Thu, 30 Apr 2015 14:41:05 -0700
Fantasy Tip: A pitch count is typically bad news for fantasy upside, so Nolasco ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) isn't a great option for FantasyScore contests Saturday. Outside of AL-only leagues, Nolasco will have to prove he can handle the American League before he warrants a roster spot. Take a wait-and-see approach with Nolasco.
