Minnesota Twins news, rumors and injuries

Minnesota Twins SP Tommy Milone (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left elbow Monday, Aug. 3. SP Tyler Duffey will be called up from Class AAA Rochester to make his major league debut Wednesday, Aug. 5, against the Toronto Blue Jays. Duffey went 4-6 with a 2.72 ERA for Rochester this year. SP Jose Berrios was in consideration, too, but the Twins felt Duffey was more prepared. Milone's DL trip is precautionary, and manager Paul Molitor said Milone's elbow was "in good shape" structurally. SP Trevor May remains in a relief role.
Fantasy Tip: Duffey will be a cheap option on FantasyScore if you want to build your lineup with studs at other positions. However, a matchup against the highest run-scoring team in the major leagues isn't an ideal place to use the young right-hander.

Fantasy Tip: While Hunter's ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) batting average has fallen off the map (.249), his counting stats are more than respectable. For the season, he has 49 runs, 17 home runs and 56 RBI. He is hitting in the heart of a solid lineup and worth considering for FantasyScore contests when the Twins face a favorable starting pitcher.

Fantasy Tip: Perkins isn't in danger of losing his closing duties just yet, but if his downward trend continues, the Twins could be forced to make a move.

Fantasy Tip: Rosario ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) is 8-for-22 (.364) with a double, three triples, a home run and three RBIs over the past week. He makes a nice sleeper play in FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Robinson ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) is batting .248 with no home runs and 13 RBIs in 129 at-bats this season. Better outfield options can be found for a comparable price in FantasyScore.

Minnesota Twins OF Byron Buxton (thumb) said his sprained left thumb was fully healed after taking on-field batting practice earlier this week. He is expected to travel to Fort Myers, Fla. in the next few days to face live pitching in batting practice. If all goes well, he could begin a minor league rehab assignment shortly thereafter, with a goal of returning to the majors later this month.
Fantasy Tip: Buxton ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) only had seven hits in 37 at-bats prior to suffering the thumb injury but he deserves to remain rostered in all formats due to his upside. He has spent his down time watching the at-bats of 2B Brian Dozier, 3B Trevor Plouffe and OF Torii Hunter and has made slight adjustments to his own hitting approach based on what he has observed.

Fantasy Tip: Walker's ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) polarizing performances from start to start are near maddening. His year-long numbers haven't recovered his early season beatings (8.74 ERA after five starts), and the gem Friday was preceded by a four-game string where he allowed 18 earned runs. Walker is an elite talent, and his struggles can likely be chalked up to inexperience. He projects to continue being a high-risk, high-reward start in all fantasy formats going forward.

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins rebounded with a scoreless ninth inning in a non-save situation against the Seattle Mariners Thursday, July 30, after blowing two saves out of the All-Star break while allowing six earned runs. The Twins on Friday, July 31, acquired RP Kevin Jepsen from the Tampa Bay Rays to bolster their bullpen in front of Perkins. Right-handed hitters are batting just .192 against Jepsen this year, but he has a 4.60 ERA in his last 18 outings going back to June 11.
Fantasy Tip: Perkins was due to face a rough patch after being perfect in save chances in the first half of the season. He isn't in any danger of being bumped from ninth-inning duties, though. Jepsen is in a rough patch of his own but could be Minnesota's primary eighth-inning setup man for Perkins. Jepsen has very minimal fantasy value in the deepest of setups.

Fantasy Tip: Nothing to see here. Polanco is only up because Trevor Plouffe went on the paternity list, and is getting his first start of the year here. However, he's logged just 10 career at-bats over two years in the big leagues and deserves absolutely zero fantasy consideration.

Minnesota Twins OF Byron Buxton (thumb) said he plans on taking batting practice again in the next few days. Manager Paul Molitor said Buxton will head to Fort Myers, Fla., for a rehab assignment this weekend or early next week.
Fantasy Tip: Buxton ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is still likely several weeks away from returning to action for the Twins, and they don't need to rush him back with Aaron Hicks heating up. Buxton was hitting only .189 (7-for-37) after being called up to the major leagues, but his raw abilities and upside are reasons for keeping him stashed in most leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Mauer ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) is hitting .308 during his hitting streak, which is only slightly better than his overall batting average for the season. He has no homers, three runs scored and just one RBI during the run, which has been mostly littered with singles. In other words, don't get too terribly excited in FantasyScore despite seeing the double-digit hit streak on the board.

Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana allowed eight runs - six earned - and eight hits with four walks and just three strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings in a loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday, July 29.
Fantasy Tip: Santana ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) breezed through his past two starts, and he has been money on the road going 2-0 with a 0.76 ERA in three outings. However, in two showings at Target Field he is 0-1 with a 11.17 ERA. FantasyScore players should avoid Santana until he irons out his problems at home, but feel free to use him on the road.

Minnesota Twins 3B Trevor Plouffe was placed on the paternity list Wednesday, July 29, and SS Jorge Polanco will be called up to join the team in a corresponding move. It's not set in stone that Polanco will return to the minors when Plouffe is back, according to manager Paul Molitor. SS Danny Santana has been struggling and hasn't started since the weekend. Polanco hit .284/.309/.352 with six doubles, six RBI and a stolen base in 22 games for Class AAA Rochester. His defense is a work in progress, as he had 24 errors in 83 minor league games.
Fantasy Tip: Eduardo Nunez started at the hot corner today for the Twins, and Miguel Sano (ankle) is healthy enough to play third base now, too, meaning Polanco is unlikely to have much fantasy value in the short term with Plouffe not expected to miss much time.
Wed, 29 Jul 2015 10:59:39 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Hicks ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) has become a real nice value play in daily games while he's hot, and his nice run should keep him receiving steady playing time, even when Byron Buxton returns from injury.
Wed, 29 Jul 2015 07:50:32 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Nunez ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) is hitting just .167 this month and isn't a good selection on FantasyScore. It's a little curious for Plouffe to be sitting out when the team just had an off day Monday, but Francisco Liriano is a tough draw.
