Minnesota Twins news, rumors and injuries

Minnesota Twins SP Pat Dean shut down the Seattle Mariners on Friday, May 27, working seven innings and allowing just two runs on four hits. He walked none and struck out eight to earn his first major-league win.
Fantasy Tip: In his two starts, Dean has allowed four runs in 13 innings while fanning 13. It's an encouraging start for the Boston College product, but the finesse lefty wasn't a strikeout pitcher in the minors so expect big-league hitters to start squaring him up once they get more looks. Still, those in AL-only leagues can take a shot to see if this Dean keeps grading on a curve... or, well, at least throwing them.

Minnesota Twins 3B Trevor Plouffe (knee) left the team's game against the Seattle Mariners in the fourth inning on Friday, May 27, with what was called a mild MCL sprain in his right knee. Manager Paul Molitor indicated Plouffe would undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.
Fantasy Tip: Plouffe has struggled of late, 3-for-27 in his last seven games, so perhaps a couple days off to rest his mildly sprained knee would be a blessing in disguise. We know Plouffe has good power, but right now he's only worth owning in AL-only leagues and maybe as a stash candidate in deep mixed setups.

Fantasy Tip: Despite a lack of power, Nunez has done nothing but produce for the Twins this year with a .314/.347/.482 slash line with four home runs, 19 RBI and eight stolen bases as a utility player. As long as he keeps hitting, the Twins will find a spot for him, and it is likely to come at the expense of Escobar. He's great depth in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. Against King Felix, he's a contrarian play in daily games hitting leadoff.

Minnesota Twins 2B Brian Dozier and OF Miguel Sano both broke out of power slumps with home runs Wednesday, May 25. Dozier struck out twice and lined out in his other at-bats, but manager Paul Molitor liked that Dozier wasn't trying to pull everything. Sano struck out his first time up and entered the game with a league-high 66 strikeouts. Molitor sees Sano getting through his funk at the plate.
Fantasy Tip: Dozier's low batting average on balls in play (.217) suggests more hits and home runs are in his future. After all, he did club 28 long balls a season ago. If the Dozier owner in your league is frustrated, take a gander at buying low. With Sano, you get what you see; tons of elite power potential as a 30-homer candidate but also a lot of swings and misses. He'll kill your average but aid you in power.

Fantasy Tip: It's probably a matter of days before Buxton returns to the majors. Start picking him up in deeper leagues in anticipation.

Fantasy Tip: Sano is batting just .221 with an MLB-leading 67 strikeouts through 45 games and had collected just two hits in his previous 24 at-bats before homering in the fifth inning Wednesday. DFS players should wait for him to string together several solid performances at the plate before relying on him again

Fantasy Tip: Minnesota's starting rotation has recorded just six wins to date and Duffey has one-third of those wins, making him the only starter on the team with multiple victories. This feat is even more amazing considering that he began the season in the minors. That being said, Duffey is only worth rostering in AL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues.

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (shoulder) was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list Wednesday, May 25, in order to create room for RP Buddy Boshers on the 40-man roster.
Fantasy Tip: As a result of the move, Perkins will be ineligible to return from the disabled list before June 10. He will return to the closer's role for Minnesota once he is activated and deserves to be stashed in all seasonal leagues. In the interim, Kevin Jepsen will continue to see save opportunities. Boshers is a 28-year-old lefty who possesses little fantasy value in any format.

Fantasy Tip: Mauer hasn't done much with a .213-2-6 line this month, but the same can be said for the entire offense. He has a so-so matchup against Dillon Gee, but the three-hole gives him some upside today. Nunez has surprised with a .303-3-17 line this year, and he's a solid play in the low end today.
Wed, 25 May 2016 08:54:19 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Dozier is struggling with a .211-1-4 line this month. Dillon Gee has a decent 2.90 ERA, but he doesn't strike much fear in the matchup. However, Dozier's struggles put him in a wait-and-see approach in DFS.

Fantasy Tip: Kepler had a brief call-up to the Twins last month but was hitting .275 with one home run and 17 RBI for Rochester. He's the Twins' second ranked prospect this year and could be back up later when rosters expand. He has a keen eye at the plate and should develop more power, but right now he's strictly a guy to monitor in keeper leagues.

Minnesota Twins 2B Brian Dozier hasn't hit a home run at home this year and hasn't done so since Aug. 15 of last year, a span of 149 at-bats. He's hitting .188 with a .262 on-base percentage in 37 games at Target Field in that span. The Twins are trying to fix Dozier, and despite the fact he has two minor league options left, Minnesota doesn't seem interested in sending him down. Dozier hit several balls hard over the weekend but wasn't rewarded, and his batting average on balls in play dropped to a career-worst .218. His strikeout rate is 16.5%, which is well below his career mark of 19%, and he's swinging at 29.3% of pitches outside the zone. Dozier and the Twins insist his right hamstring isn't the cause of his problems.
Fantasy Tip: Dozier's low BABIP suggests he's in line for positive regression, and home runs are surely to follow. This would be a good time to approach a Dozier owner about buying low, as this could be rock bottom for him in 2016. It's not out of the question to drop him in shallow leagues if he continues to lose playing time to Eduardo Nunez. Everywhere else you should stay patient and bench him for better options.

Fantasy Tip: May was lights out in April and was gaining steam for a shot at saves with Glen Perkins on the DL and Kevin Jepsen shaky in the ninth. However, an absolutely brutal stretch from May 13 up until last night has changed things. May has allowed 10 earned runs and 14 hits in just 3 1/3 innings in that span. Now he'll pitch in less stressful situations. With Perkins nearing a return, it looks like May's window is closing in order to make an impression for long-term closing duties. If you have more pressing needs in deeper leagues, don't be afraid to cut May loose for now.

Minnesota Twins 1B Byung Ho Park is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 24. OF Miguel Sano is serving as the designated hitter, while OF Oswaldo Arcia draws into the lineup in right field and is hitting sixth against Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez.
Fantasy Tip: Sano has elite power but is a boom-or-bust daily pick. Arcia is of a similar nature to Sano with big power and a big swing but with with plenty of strikeouts to boot. He's hitting only .217 this year but has four home runs in 83 at-bats. Arcia qualifies as more of a sleeper selection in DFS.

Minnesota Twins 2B Brian Dozier is not in the starting lineup for the second straight game Tuesday, May 24. SS Eduardo Nunez is starting at second base again and batting leadoff against Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez.
Fantasy Tip: Dozier has shown no signs of life for the first two months other than four home runs and 14 RBI. His slash line of .199/.284/.318 has earned him a seat on the bench the last two nights in favor of the productive Nunez. It's not out of the question to dump Dozier in shallow leagues, but you'll need to keep him benched for other options everywhere else until he can figure something out. Nunez, meanwhile, continues to hit and can provide decent stolen bases numbers for those searching for depth in deep mixed and AL-only leagues.
