Twins | Ricky Nolasco not guaranteed a spot

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 11:57:50 -0800

Minnesota Twins SP Ricky Nolasco is not guaranteed a spot in the starting rotation to open the season, according to manager Paul Molitor. Molitor said SP Tyler Duffey "has a really good chance" to crack the rotation. SP Tommy Milone is a player that will battle with Nolasco for a job, and RP Trevor May will receive a look, as well. SP Jose Berrios will receive a look and could become a rotation option sometime this season.

Fantasy Tip: Nolasco has posted ERAs over 5.00 each of the last two seasons and pitched only 37 1/3 innings in 2015 because of injury. It's a stretch to think he can help many fantasy owners outside of deep AL-only leagues if he wins a rotation spot. Duffey, despite a lack of pitch speed, can generate strikeouts with his diverse arsenal. He's not a bad gamble in deep mixed leagues in a pitcher's park if he wins a job.

Twins | Carlos Quentin signs with Twins

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 09:32:50 -0800

Free-agent OF Carlos Quentin (Braves) signed a minor-league contract with the Minnesota Twins Tuesday, Feb. 2.

Fantasy Tip: Quentin, 33, is coming out of retirement, but the ballpark will likely limit his power. He's one to watch in camp as a potential AL-only flyer.

Twins | Kennys Vargas the odd-man out?

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 16:40:28 -0800

Minnesota Twins 1B Kennys Vargas may be the odd-man out on the roster to open the year after the Twins signed 1B Byung Ho Park and moved 3B Miguel Sano to right field. 1B Joe Mauer is locked in at first base. Vargas played winter ball in Puerto Rico and had seven home runs, 20 RBI and 21 runs scored in 33 games and was the league's Most Valuable Player. Vargas struck out 24 times and walked 15 times in 120 at-bats.

Fantasy Tip: Vargas had a disappointing sophomore season and was sent to the farm to work on his hitting. The switch-hitter is still young (25) and has plenty of upside, but avenues to consistent playing time remain an issue in Minnesota. He has options left, too, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see him start 2016 back in the minors.

Twins | Manager praises Byron Buxton

Sun, 31 Jan 2016 15:34:19 -0800

Minnesota Twins manager Paul Molitor had praise for OF Byron Buxton at the team's fan festival, saying "our team is going to be really good when he's playing center field. We're going to give him a chance to win that job."

Fantasy Tip: Buxton will get every chance to win that job with OF Aaron Hicks no longer on the roster. Still, remember he hit .209 last year and temper your expectations accordingly on draft day.

Twins | Joe Mauer unlikely to return to catching

Sat, 30 Jan 2016 11:44:22 -0800

Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan said the team would consider moving 1B Joe Mauer back behind the plate if he ever received medical clearance from a doctor to play the position. However, Ryan added that he wouldn't be able to forgive himself if Mauer had suffered another concussion from taking a foul tip off his mask or getting involved in a collision.

Fantasy Tip: Mauer, who will turn 33 this April, lost much of his value in fantasy baseball once he stopped qualifying as a catcher. He hit .265 with 10 home runs and 66 RBIs in 158 regular-season games last year and isn't much more than a bench player in AL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues at this stage of his career.

Twins | Trevor Plouffe staying put

Sat, 30 Jan 2016 10:04:41 -0800

Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan said the organization did not entertain trade offers for 3B Trevor Plouffe or make him available to other teams this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Plouffe had been rumored to be on the trading block because 3B/OF Miguel Sano was expected to serve as the Twins' primary third baseman in 2016, before the club ultimately decided to move him to right field. Plouffe is capable of hitting 20 homers and driving in 80 runs but his mediocre batting average and on-base percentage will keep him from being a viable starting option in most mixed fantasy leagues.

Twins | Glen Perkins encouraged with rehab

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 15:41:38 -0800

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (back) is encouraged by his offseason workouts with a core specialist, and he has been long tossing in Florida. There are no lingering neck or back issues for him.

Fantasy Tip: Perkins managed 32 saves last year but struggled in the second half, mainly because of his injury. But that's two straight years with rugged finishes, and the lefty could be in decline at age 32. Grab Kevin Jepsen as a handcuff if Perkins finds his way onto your fantasy roster.

Twins | Danny Santana moving to outfield

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 10:34:05 -0800

Minnesota Twins SS Danny Santana will move back to the outfield this year, according to general manager Terry Ryan.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear if Santana will be used occasionally at the 6 to spell Eduardo Nunez. Either way, Santana is effectively a bench player after hitting only .215 with no home runs, 21 RBI and eight stolen bases in 91 games for the Twins last year. If an injury opens up more playing time, he might be worth a look in deep AL-only leagues.

Twins | Kennys Vargas unlikely to be moved

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 11:21:51 -0800

Minnesota Twins 1B Kennys Vargas' name has popped up in trade talks with other teams this offseason, but the Twins are hesitant to trade him at the moment.

Fantasy Tip: Vargas had a tough season in 2015, although he did rebound in the minors. He boasts plenty of power but is blocked at first base and designated hitter by the likes of Joe Mauer, Byung Ho Park and Oswaldo Arcia. An injury would likely need to occur to open up significant playing time for Vargas in 2016, but if it does, he's attractive for his power in AL-only leagues.

Twins | Trevor Plouffe avoids arbitration

Mon, 25 Jan 2016 12:06:51 -0800

Minnesota Twins 3B Trevor Plouffe re-signed a one-year deal to avoid arbitration Monday, Jan. 25. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Plouffe has topped 20 home runs twice in his career, and he has driven in at least 80 runs in consecutive seasons. The issue lies in his .248/.312/.426 slash line over the past four years, and at a deep fantasy position, he doesn't project as a starting option in the majority of seasonal leagues. View him as a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues.

Twins | Kevin Jepsen avoids arbitration

Fri, 22 Jan 2016 12:19:04 -0800

Minnesota Twins RP Kevin Jepsen re-signed a one-year, $5.3 million deal to avoid arbitration Friday, Jan. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Jepsen has pitched well over the past two seasons returning a 2.47 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP and a 9.0 K/9, and he saved 15 games in 2015. He doesn't project to begin the season as the closer, which limits his fantasy appeal to cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues. However, he is a player to watch for the saves vultures, especially with his success when called upon in the ninth inning last season.

Twins | Byron Buxton is ready

Tue, 19 Jan 2016 17:35:58 -0800

Minnesota Twins OF Byron Buxton is "ready to get out there and go" as he looks forward to taking over the everyday duties in center field with OF Aaron Hicks no longer on the team. "I worked hard this offseason and probably harder than I worked the last three," the 22-year-old said. "I feel like I have to go out there and prove myself and go out there and take it."

Fantasy Tip: It's good to hear Buxton sound so focused and determined heading into his first full season in the big leagues. His stats as a rookie did underwhelm, hitting .209/.250/.326 with just two home runs, six RBI and two steals in 46 games, but he's considered one of the top prospects in the sport for a reason. Definitely keep him on your radar on draft day.

Twins | Tommy Milone avoids arbitration

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 17:19:25 -0800

Minnesota Twins SP Tommy Milone has avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $4.5 million.

Fantasy Tip: Milone went 9-5 with a 3.92 ERA in 24 games (23 starts) for Minnesota last season and is a back-of-the-rotation option for AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues. However, his 6.4 K/9 makes him an unattractive option in FantasyScore.

Twins | Miguel Sano finished with winter ball

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 12:14:18 -0800

Minnesota Twins 3B Miguel Sano has finished playing in the Dominican Winter League to focus on his conditioning and outfield work, according to general manager Terry Ryan. Sano is expected to regularly play the outfield next season.

Fantasy Tip: Sano posted a .269/.385/.530 slash line with 18 homers, 17 doubles and 52 RBI through 80 games last season, and he is an emerging power hitter with huge fantasy upside. Entering his age-23 season, the arrow is pointing straight up for Sano, and he is worth a look in the early middle rounds of seasonal drafts next spring.

Twins | Glen Perkins to remain closer

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 16:05:56 -0800

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins will remain the closer heading into the 2016 season, with RP Kevin Jepsen serving as the setup man, according to general manager Terry Ryan.

Fantasy Tip: Despite saving 30-plus games in each of the last three seasons, Perkins' stock is on the decline after dealing with injuries that threatened his production and job status for the Twins. He won't be among the most popular saves targets in traditional fantasy leagues next year, and you'd be wise to handcuff Jepsen to him if you choose to select him.
